White Rock Lake is Garbage: Photos of Litter-Choked Lake Will Hang at City Hall

You don't have to look terribly hard to find garbage at White Rock Lake: Plastic grocery bags, water bottles, plastic foam cups, lots and lots of beer cans, other stuff. It's so common it fades from consciousness, becomes part of the landscape, except of course when it becomes the entire landscape.

It's something we should think about more often, argues Annemarie Marek, president of the local nonprofit Shared FUEL. That's why the group curated "Trashing Our Treasure," a collection of photographs depicting garbage at White Rock Lake, from litter-choked shorelines to nomadic campgrounds used by the homeless.

"The exhibit's goal was to show the backdrop to the beauty to the lake," Marek says. "It's almost like the beauty and the beast."

The show features 10 photographs from a host of local artists, including Observer contributor Dylan Hollingsworth. It debuted last year at the Bath House Cultural Center and was well received. Now Shared FUEL is taking it to the lobby of City Hall. And by "now," I mean right now. When I spoke to Marek a bit ago, she was in the in the lobby helping set up. It'll be up until August 10.

And next time you're at White Rock, pick up a piece of trash, eh?

NO, I am not SHIT FOR BRAINS . Im 67 and I was there and I carried empty  six packs back to the store for a refund all the time! They didn't have plastic sacks in stores at all, allsoft drinks were in glass bottles and cans that you had to use a church key on to open cans and bottles. Bottles did not have twist off caps and cans did not have pull tabs, the church keys were free at the counter.

Then there are the wealthy mass polluters too: fat, white, male, and Republican.  Belching fumes and fracking away.  Who's the worst offender?  So much for livin' in dignity.  Talk about indignity.

I agree.  It is sad that people choose to desecrate our Flag, that means so much to so many people, rather than find some other way to express their views. The only thing more disheartening would be the further degradation of the Rights that Flag represents.  Without those rights, and the principles behind them, the flag is just another colorful rag.

Too bad they can't spend more of that effort on improving their lives by living with dignity.

Thanks for your service. As to the 2nd half of your post: That is why the Flag Code does not have the force of law behind it. Doesn't make it any less sad to see the principles of it being nearly completely forgotten.

Is it that hard to just say "I don't need a bag, thanks?"

Solution:   More trash cans, multilingual signage, and conscientiousness on a go-forward basis. For the existing crap:   Can we get some Scout Troops down there, maybe some poor orange-vested Community Service parolees?   Race isn't important.  Hell, they can even be LGBT for all I care.

Portions do, but not all. F#$k wasn't necessary, you're right. That guy pissed me off. I normally don't get pissed at asinine comments. Apologies.

I don't normally reply to people like you, but Bachman and Browning are in the Bachman watershed, and neither empty into White Rock Lake. Fuck not necessary.

But, of course, allow the manufacture of plastic or PET-based canoes and kayaks, fiberglass resins for sailboat hulls, right? Get real Jim.  As for your comment further on, about all the trash coming from upstream? For the trash in the picture, that is probably correct.  For the trash around the shores of lake, a bit less likely.  I would say the trash around the lake comes from the people using the lake; The joggers and bikers, picnickers, Sunday strollers, kayakers, and YES, the members of the private clubs with marinas on the lake. Education and code enforcement are what is needed to change the attitude toward litter.  Regressively banning products that serve a valuable purpose is not going to stop litter, the litter you see will simply be replaced by the products we substitute for the plastics.

They try to do that to me too. I just say to keep it for the next customer. Works every time!

Cottonwood, Browning/Bachman, Floyd and Jackson Branches are all part of White Rock Creek, and all flow thru Preston Hollow. Study a map yourself, and maybe next time don't call out a Watershed Engineer without knowing what the fuck you're talking about.
