Forbes Ranks Dallas Fourth Coolest City, Loses All Credibility By Putting Houston First

calatravahipster.jpg
We knew the gigantic PBR would pay off.
Dallas may be the greatest city in the history of ever, but how cool is it?

Pretty damn cool if you ask Forbes. It ranks us number fourth in its list of America's coolest cities. A major accomplishment considering how little there is here for hipsters.

But don't break out the champagne yet. Lest you think the rankings are highly scientific and represent something more than a meaningless attempt to generate page views, glance at the top of the list. D.C. and Los Angeles out-cool Dallas, which I guess makes sense, but the coolest city of all? Houston.

The Bayou City may not be the first place you associate with being hip or trendy. But Houston has something many other major cities don't: jobs. With the local economy humming through the recession, Houston enjoyed 2.6% job growth last year and nearly 50,000 Americans flocked there in response -- particularly young professionals. In fact, the median age of a Houston resident is a youthful 33.

They apparently didn't see our even more scientific assessment ranked Houston as the asshole of the universe.

There are two ways to make a place cool. Build the jobs that forces the "cool" people to come build the "cool" places or build "cool" places to bring in the jobs. Dallas is slowly doing the later, while Houston's pace of the former is far more compelling.

There is absolutely NO denying that Houston is much more quirky, genuine, and interesting than Dallas. Or that it has all of the same big-city amenities of Dallas, and then some. That is a lot of why it will make these "cool" lists.

The fact that you had to write this dumb article to bash just shows you guys are nothing but sore losers living in a sterile, trying-too-hard land of $30k-millionaires.

I've lived in both cities and visit Houston often.  It far and away ahead of Dallas on any coolness metric.  Light years ahead in the arts, music, and cuisine.  Much more parkland and greenery.  Much more egalitarian.  Dallas is an LA wannabe.  Houston is a New Orleans cousin.

I have relatives in the Northeast, they say everything about this place-OTHER than being cool! They think it's a sh+thole; and they may be right.  I know one thing, when my daughter grads from HS, the road behind me will be littered with flames as I escape (at top speed!) from this flat, yuppie filled, nothing to do, no natural beauty, rubbish filled, fake contrived pile of crap. And I will say good riddance, and be better. This place is built upon such soul rotting excursions as shopping, and eating eat out.........shopping just means you have nothing to do, and eating out here means "mostly" eating at chain places.  I can microwave my own Chicken Parmesan!

ps-Atleast Houston has the ocean close by, and a GREAT forest.

Houstin is one of those cities that after you leave you kinda want to kill yourself because innocents (and cleanliness) is gone.  Houston is a disgace

P.S.

The beautiful Dallas Arboretum alone shows just how beautiful Dallas is!

I Live in Los Angeles, so I can be objective in this "Dallas/VS/Houston Forbes listing....I've been to both cities many times & DALLAS is far superior to Houston!  Dallas is cleaner,  has the best Galleria, & for that matter the best shopping, better & more restaurants, a better skyline, more larger & elegant hotels, bigger & better suburbs, and in closing I will DALLAS has "it all" over Houston......{Always thought Houston was a cesspool like Oakland, CA}

Well, if anyone knows anything about cool, it's Forbes Magazine.

I lived in Houston for eight years and visited the city earlier this month. Today I live in Dallas and have been here for sixteen years. I can only assume that the writer of the story never actually visited the city. While it looks good on paper, in person it is an absolute armpit. Simply comparing Dallas versus Houston on a 'coolness' scale it wouldn't even be close. Looking at the two cities from a business perspective I would have to say Dallas is better for technology companies and Houston is better for oil and gas companies. But, me and you talking, I am not sure Dallas should be in the top five coolest cities in the US. But if you take in account a number of factors Dallas would be at the top of my list - I guess it would because I choose to live here.

Whoever wrote that obviously has not spent a good amount of time, or done the fun things, in Portland, OR, Seattle, WA, New Orleans, LA, etc. Dallas and Houston should be no where near the top 10; okay cities for jobs and cost of living but no where near the coolest not by a long shot.

Houston is a great city.  I'd definitely put Dallas ahead of Houston if they were rating "Most Pretentious City" or "Biggest douchebags and their adoring girlfriends" or maybe "City with the largest Kardashian admirers". Actually, I love living in Dallas...but I prefer Houston.

As a Houston boy — born and raised — just let me say: SUCK IT, DALLAS! :D

If Forbes ever sees the picture at the top of this article, we'll top their list of "Biggest Douchebag Cities." Seriously, not being associated with hipsters can only help our "cool."

What? We have a tv show that now has been put on tv TWICE! The show is called Dallas not Houston... I know we need a cooler mayor :)

actually I think Houston is a lot more hip than Dallas.  Dallas is yuppie and not at all "warm."  DFW's only saving grace is FW.

Dear Esshead,

You have NO idea what cool is.....please go hang out of the Galleria; where being cool is breathing.  It (cool) is ALL about quality of life (ie mountains, rivers, , schools, cost of goods, business,etc.)- Colorado is cool, Portland is cool, Santa Fe is cool; hanging out in Dallas is hot.  Get it!?  Dallas is one thing.....a freaking soul destroyer-jes sayin'!

kergo1spaceship

Also,

People come to Dallas to visit relatives.........it's no destination. That would be like vacationing in Des Moines, or Toledo-LAME!

You're funny. If cleaner means more strerile and boring to you, than you're correct. I've lived in Austin and Houston... someone from Austin would never think Dallas is cool. Houston, yes, at least it has some quirk. You just don't get it, apparently. But that's fine, we have enough Californians in Austin already.

The Galleria? LOL! Dallas' Galleria was copied after Houston's, look it up. Oh, and you need to Google "best restarant cities" lists... you will see Houston in the top 10 of many of them, but not Dallas.

Fail.

the headline didn't say the best Metrosexual City. Do you bat "lefhanded"?

@mike90069 And there we have it! Some dipshit from LA says Dallas is better. If anything, that just confirms what Forbes says.

@kergo1spaceship Kergo, Dallas, I am with you; this is a douchebag materialist city with no soul.  Houston is actually a pretty nice place.  Lots of parks, family restaurants, real local artists who can paint in more than one dimension, excellent music, much less segregated and racist.  I think Houston is the most livable big city in Texas.  And no Budweiser for me.  Whiskey after 5:00.

@primi_timpano  @kergo1spaceship If you don't want segregation there are plenty of black or mexican neighborhoods you can move your lily white guilt ass into. Or is "diversity" for you just ordering with a spanish accent at the taco truck?
