Marc Veasey Doesn't Like Domingo Garcia "Trumpeting" Black Paper's Endorsement

Categories: Politics

Marc Veasey has twice accused political rival Domingo Garcia of using or endorsing racially offensive language.
In case you haven't been paying attention, the race for the 33rd Congressional District is still a pissing match likely to end up in a runoff between between Domingo Garcia and Marc Veasey for the Democratic nomination.

A quick recap: Garcia called big SUVs un-American, which led Veasey to proclaim his love for General Motors, which prompted Garcia to refer to Veasey as the "errand boy" of the corporate establishment, which Veasey's campaign and others decried as evidence of anti-black racism by Garcia. Garcia, in turn, accused Veasey of calling Civil Rights icon Joseph Lowery senile.

The latest salvo hit my inbox this morning. Veasey's campaign is now blasting Garcia for "trumpeting" an North Dallas Gazette editorial endorsing Garcia.

The campaign points to "multiple insulting phrases" directed toward African American candidates and politicians and helpfully culls some of the offenders:

"It seems the African American candidates have let their communities down while not embracing Hispanics either."

"Unfortunately, African Americans continue to dominate the unemployment rates and African American politicians have seemingly done nothing short of delivering empty promises that gain momentum during the election process."

"For far too long Dallas African American politicians have over promised and under-delivered."

"African American political figures have done little to reach across the color line to include Hispanics and vice versa."

The North Dallas Gazette, huh. Can't you just picture a newsroom full of smug white people, white hoods folded neatly beside the typewriter for easy access, hammering out screeds about the Negro problem (and speaking in adulatory tones about Hispanics?) from some McMansion in Preston Hollow?

Not quite. The paper is headquartered in Plano, not Preston Hollow, presumably not in a McMansion. More to the point, NDG can fairly be described as a black paper, one that is owned and staffed by black journalists and focuses its coverage on the black community.

You can see, then, why Garcia felt comfortable trumpeting the endorsement. From a "white paper," those statements would undoubtedly be labeled racist. But from a paper owned and run by African Americans, the statements trumpeted by the Veasey campaign feel more like an honest if oversimplified assessment of black political leadership from within.

In an email, NDG Editor Ruth Ferguson said the paper stands behind its editorial and declined further comment.

How dare an African-American newspaper not endorse the African-American candidate!  At least Veasey is finally making appearances in his District.

Domingo is an honest and fair man. Anyone who is lucky enough to know him knows that he is not racist and he is all about helping people. No one ever talks about the good things such as the contributions to the Hispanic and Black communities. This man has been giving back even before he ran for office.

Kudos to the Veasey campaign for highlighting an endorsement of your opponent I probably would have NEVER seen.  Wasn't it just a few days ago the Veasey campaign made a big-deal over a Garcia comment pointing out that Veasey's bought & paid for by special interests and Republicans?  How stupid for the Veasey campaign to make an issue out of Domingo Garcia getting an endorsement.  I found this endorsement of Garcia to be quite positive and well-written.  It says Domingo will be inclusive to all constituents and fight for issues that matter to both African-Americans and Hispanics.  This stuff is making the Veasey campaign seem desperate.

Doesn't Veasey wife drive a Mercedes? What is Pro American about that? BTW, everything gets better MPG than an SUV look it up.

So if your wife drives around town in a Maserati which gets worse MPGs than an SUV, does that mean you can still play the "I'm Pro-American" card?

Veasy and the emails from groups supporting him annoyed me so much that I figured out and called every friend and family member in that district.  Then, I got my friends and family to vote for Domingo.

I don't live in Dallas, so it doesn't concern me, but there's a Garcia supporter in my complex who feels the best thing to do for the guy is plaster bumper stickers on the fence an throw the backing on the ground.

As fast as I pull 'em off, they go back up, an more backing blowing in the wind.

Now when I see graffiti and litter, I think of this Garcia guy.

I agree with Joseph I.  How could anyone vote for Garcia when he was one of "the worst legislators" in the state?  He was soooo obnoxious and alienated so many other legislators that he had to beg others to introduce bills for him under their names since he knew no one would vote for a "Garcia" bill.  Voters kicked him out of office because he was so bad.  Do the voters of 33 want one of the worst representatives in congress?

How does Garcia make a comment of "gas guzzlers" when he drives foreign made sports cars?  He should learn what the word hypocrisy means.

How can they vote for someone who does NOT live in 33?  He is using a phantom address in 33 to qualify and may or may not actually move in later - depends on the election.  Garcia is just a wannabee in search of an office.

"Honest"?  I don't think you know him well.

Why can't Dallas Democrats come up with better candidates? Are there nor more Ron Kirks out there?

Yes, let's not forget Mr. Garcia had the distinction of making the worst legislators list the last time he had an elected job.  People should review why.

His record of performance as a legislator paints a different picture.

When hiring somebody, it is always best to look at past performance as a predictor of future behavior.

So, please nominate Mr. Garcia.  He will be a pleasantly ineffective force in Washington and a wonderful compliment to the other Democrats in D.C..

They manufacture Mercedes in the U.S.A.(Alabama has one). Ergo, they supply jobs to American workers. Look it up.

A Maserati dealership in the U.S. hires American salemans, technicians, and the owner of the dealership is probably American. So, it's somewhat American.

Stay off his wife you hater. She earned that herself. Question is, what do you drive and what do you do for the environment, community, and country?

Why would I want to celebrate divers taking(or are you inferring, being) shitty? If a diver is shitty I suppose that's their business. What is it to you or me?

Are you sure it doesn't concern you?  The district these guys are fighting over includes parts of Ft Worth, Arlington, Irving and Dallas.  You might get to vote for one of these clowns.

I'm getting really sick of this constantly repeated "worst legislator" in the state assessment from GOP rag Texas Monthly.  For any real Democrat, being labelled as the worst legislator" in the state is a badge of honor.  It's no wonder Veasey and his supporters keep using Republicans to attack.  No real Democrat would stand with Fox News, Texas Monthly, Harold Simmons, etc, etc, etc.

Regarding the residency issue, come one.  He's a half a block outside of the district and Veasey just bought a house in the district in March.  Go read the Dallas Observer article on the subject.  Oh wait, that requires independent thinking, nevermind.

Not really sure who I'm hating on since you did not specify in your reply. My comment was not directed at Elba. As to your point, it matters not what I drive or do since I am not a local politician making bold statements against my opponent during an election. I'm sure this is just the beginning of many hypocritical statements that will be made by both sides.
