Liberal Leppert, Tea Party Taj Unmasked by Completely True, Fair-Minded Election Materials

Categories: Politics

LepSlide1_1.jpg
Because there's no way a true conservative could ever look this pathetic.
The primary for the U.S. Senate, House and a slew of local races is coming up -- on Tuesday to be exact, with early voting ending today -- which is why you've been seeing a ramp-up in the ... revelations. Seriously. These just blew my mind.

For example: Did you know that Tom Leppert, the former Dallas mayor and businessman who's been tacking hard to the right in his campaign, is basically a pinko commie? Says so right here. And Taj Clayton, the young upstart taking on Eddie Bernice Johnson for the Democratic nomination for the 30th Congressional District? "Tea Party Taj," they call him, a lapdog of the big-monied Republican extremists.

I called Clayton to confront him with these facts, which were unearthed by a civic-minded former staffer of EBJ's who has since had absolutely no connection with the congresswoman except for that one little fundraising thing that one time.

How, I asked, could did his picture get on a mailer that also included photos of an angry Mitt Romney and befuddled-looking George W. Bush if he were not really a closet Republican?

His "answer" was that he "guessed" that "someone" had put his photo there when designing the flier.

And why the somber look, Taj? Feeling guilty about pretending to be a Democrat while secretly cavorting with right-wing extremists? Except that right-wing extremists don't feel guilt, so you must be deciding whether you're going to ban Christmas first or just start strangling puppies as soon as you're elected, right?

Clayton said he talks with potential constituents at campaign events, where he assumes the photo was taken.

"I don't know where that pictures from actually. ... A lot of times when I'm interacting with voters, my visage will reflect the gravity of the situation."

In political circles, that's known as putting on one's serious face, which happens to be a classic technique of Republicans, especially the crazy ones.

Clayton denies all this, calling it "nonsense" and "exactly what's wrong with politics," which is exactly what you'd expect him to say. Do you think the wolf ever stopped insisting he was actually a sheep? Not until he'd eaten the entire flock, he didn't.

I had some equally damning questions for Leppert. For example:

Is it true that you once stood in front of a banner for ACORN, the radical left-wing election fraud outfit that, by the way, loves Al Franken and John Edwards, who, by the way, cheated on his wife when she was terminally ill with cancer?

And:

Why are your eyes so big and pathetically sad looking in that one picture? Did fruity-liberal Tom get his feelings hurt?

And lastly:

When you laid out the red carpet for illegal immigrants in Dallas, was the red carpet real or metaphorical? If it was real, did you put it out on Interstate 35 E, or did the illegals take I-35 W to Fort Worth and pick up the red carpet on I-30?

But Liberal Leppert's campaign didn't return my call, so we'll just have to assume that he is indeed a communist. Phew. I'm thankful that "Dewhurst for Texas," which I can only assume is a disinterested coalition of average citizens, told me the real story before election day.

Don't fool yourself.  While her opponents keep repeating the one error in jugdement (scholarships) over her 20 years in congress and 10+ years in the state legislature she has been an effective representative for all of Dallas.  She has championed heathcare funding, public transportation, public education, equal rights and access,  and business opportunities that cannot be questioned.  Carraway and Clayton are simply no replacement for her.  One is fooling you and the other is fooling themselves.

Watch this video and tell me this is "one error in judgement":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

By "one error" did you mean "many repeated errors"?

By "error" did you mean "deliberate self-serving acts of wrongdoing"?

By "judgement" did you mean "attempts to cover-up after being caught"?

If so, I think it's perfectly fair to criticize her for her "many repeated deliberate self-serving acts of wrongdoing and attemps to cover-up after being caught". Not only did she basically have checks sent directly to her relatives, she was sending money to the families of personal business interests. I would also point out that Caraway was the only one to criticize her for that. Clayton has only been positive.

Furthermore, EBJ hasn't been effective at all in the past several years. She hasn't "championed" anything recently. Having shamed herself and her party, she has clearly been trying to stay out of the spotlight. She is relying on negative campaigning and voter ignorance to get re-elected.

It seems to me like you're the one who has been fooled.

Don't say it was a mistake like "2+2=5" or "forgot to buy the milk" - those are honest mistakes.  The stealing of the scholarship money was a series of planned, intentional acts.  Her interviews while trying cover this up were more intentional lies - "we looked for them, we can't find the scholarship applications"?  What a joke.  This one was what she was caught at - what else don't we know about?  Do members of congress get one free try at stealing?

When she was in the state legislature, she was a big part of gerrymandering the congressional district she knew she was going to run for in the next election - that demonstrated a lack of integrity - she should have recused herself if she was going to run for election.

When you say "championed" - what does that mean?  I can say I "champion" many things but what are the results?  South Dallas economic development is nothing.  Her constiuents are no better off.  Please be specific - what legislation did she author?

RTGolden
RTGolden

She certainly championed no-bid contracts for the concessions contracts at Love Field.  To be awarded to the company in which she holds a stake.

Scruffygeist

One error in judgement? No, one type of error in judgement repeated many times. Her district and the state deserves better than someone who can't see the harm in giving her non-qualifying relatives and others in her circle public scholarship money. That stupidity and/or total disregard outweighs her "accomplishments."

watchingsouthdetroit
watchingsouthdetroit

To those who advocate another term of EBJ:  why?  She has shown her total lack of integrity and disregard of the constiuents by steering the scholarship money to her own relatives.  Her idiotic and nonsensical answers to questions about her stealing this money exposed her as being just a stupid person.  Who believed her story that they looked for the "applications" that were filled out by her relatives but that they were "lost". How do you lose items that never existed?  How do you have "applications" from people who don't live inher district?

Plus, what has EBJ done?  What great legislation has she put forth?  Anything?  It seems she is just around to line her pockets and to get reelected every 2 years.

EBJ is part of the corrupt south Dallas "leadership" that needs to be removed.  New leaders who want to make things better for all the people are needed.  The old self serving leaders (Price, Hicks, Fantroy, EBJ, etc.) and the old self serving south Dallas pastors who keep supporting these leaders need to step aside.

Hey sinclair/GVirginia/Dem-o-graphic,

You posted this comment under the wrong name. I believe your "Dem-o-graphic" persona was the one on the "Typhoid" thread.

If you really want people to vote for EBJ, why is it so hard to point to specific, positive accomplishments in the past few years? Why can't you do any better than attacking someone else? The only things I hear about are her scandal and her unprofessional behavior during the campaign. For someone who says she wants to "run on her record" she sure seems to duck and hide from public forums where she has to answer questions. Kind of reminds me of Sarah Palin.

It's pretty sad that she has no recent accomplishments and has to do nothing but negative, false attacks against her opponents. If she wins, it will be pretty clearly on the basis of name recognition alone. If that happens, I'll be pretty ashamed of the local electorate.

Why is it that I have to live in EBJ's district, yet she doesn't?

I thought the mailer was over the top.  But the underlying, uneasy question "Who is Taj" still rings true.  Really it is logical to re-elect EBJ.  It's the safest move given the circumstances.  EBJ goes back for a final term, and Taj and others get a couple of more years to show us why they should get this seat.  The best candidates will step up when EBJ's last term is up.  Maybe that's Taj or maybe that's somebody not running this time.

wilson82
wilson82

Hmm, I think the "Who is Taj" question has been answered pretty sufficiently. He has been straightforward on his background, his family, and his politics. No one outside of the EBJ campaign headquarters questions any of it. He's been active in the community and he's been active with the Democrat party.

The bigger question is "Who is EBJ?" We know who she WAS but look at how she has behaved during this campaign. I'm sorry, but at 76 years old and after 20 years in Washington, she sure seems to have changed both in judgement and in temperment.

Why is electing EBJ "logical"? Why is that "safe"? Do you REALLY think Clayton is going to suddenly say "yeah, I've been a Democrat all my life, I've raised tens of thousands of dollars for Obama, my campaign director was a top guy in Obama's '08 campaign but oops... I'm really a Republican!"  Every respectable politico in the state of Texas knows it's ridiculous. This very article makes the point that it's ridiculous.

On the other hand, look at EBJ's performance in recent years. The scholarship scandal, and the fact that she tried to lie about it when caught, speaks volumes. The choice to send one of her operatives off to start the most non-independent super PAC in the country speaks volumes.  The choice to hit Barara Caraway with crude personal attacks speaks volumes.

Is this really the EBJ that we voted into office 20 years ago? Perhaps more importantly, why, after 20 years in office, is THIS how she chooses to campaign?  Why does she have to go so starkly negative?  She has been in Washington for 20 years. If she were REALLY doing her job right, this election SHOULD be a cake walk. All she would have to do is talk about all of the great, meaningful things she's done in the past couple of terms and that's a wrap.  But wait... why doesn't she do this? It apears that, like most long-serving politicians, she has stopped protecting her constituents and is, instead, protecting her own neck. On top of that, her scholarship scandal basically took away all of her credibility. She has no clout. Her "seniority" is moot. She's a lame duck. She makes voters in the 30th district a laughing stock just like the Washington DC voters who re-elected Marion Barry after his crack conviction.

On the other hand, I've seen more positive attributes in Taj Clayton in the past 3-4 months than I've seen from EBJ in the past 3-4 years. He stays positive when she goes negative. He stays the course while she panics. He brings energy and hard work while she brings disdain and a sense of entitlement.

If you know about how things work in the Government, you know that being in Congress is NOT like being President, Governor or even Senator.  Being an effective member of congress isn't neccessarily enhanced by being connected or having served 20 terms.  There are 400+ members of the House.  They're a dime a dozen. They only serve 2-year terms. The traits that really make great representatives are JUDGEMENT, TEMPERMENT, and WORK ETHIC. It's about making good decisions that are in the interest of the constituents. It's about keeping your priorities straight when you get pressure from lobbyists and special interest groups. It's about getting out there and busting your butt and making every session count. Clayton has shown better judgement, stronger temperment AND greater work ethic than EBJ, hands down. I think there's no question who the "logical", "smart", and "safe" choice is. It's time for the paranoid, defensive, erratic incumbent to retire. It's time for the hard-working, staightforward, positive newcomer to take over.

sinclair

I think when he is ready to cave on environmental issues before being elected there is cause for alarm, if you are concerned about the environment. Clayton seems so desperate to be elected that he will do or say anything. He is definitely not up for the task at hand. Perhaps he should go back to cleaning toilets, he has some experience there.

wilson82
wilson82

Yes, of course, sinclair... Obama, Clayton, and the rest of the Democrats hate the environment...

You definitely have something right, though: there is definitely a DESPERATE CANDIDATE running in District 30...

This candidate was outraised 2-to-1 in individual donors and had to turn to massive Super PAC contributions to shore up their campaign coffers. This candidate chooses to run a disgraceful negative campaign rather than running on positive ideas. This candidate hides from open public forums and, instead, chooses to lob petty personal attacks and shameful lies. This candidate desperately dispatched an operative to start a Super PAC to do nothing but spread blatant lies about their cheif opponent. This candidate is draped in scandal and disgrace and has been ineffective on the job for years. With nothing positive to run on, this DESPERATE candidate will say or do ANYTHING to be elected.

Of course, this candidate is Eddie Bernice Johnson.

By the way, Taj Clayton is a Harvard-trained lawyer whose Congressional candidacy has a 10-term incumbent shaking in her boots. He and his family lifted themselves up by the bootstraps to become an American success story.

What are you doing with your life?  Aside from being a flunkie for EBJ, of course...

Too bad EBJ didn't give scholarships to deserving students rather than giving them to her family members and business interests. Maybe if deserving students like Taj got more scholarship money, they wouldn't have to clean bathrooms to pay for college.

Really?
Really?

Logical? Really?

To re-elect a person who is so morally vacant that she would direct scholarships to her friends and relatives in a district where SO MANY of her constituents, for whom these scholarships were intended, are worthy recipients??

To re-elect a person who is so morally vacant that she intentionally spreads vitriol and lies about (both)her opponents in a desperate attempt to stem the tide of growing momentum against her re-election efforts??

A wise woman once said, "when people show you who they are, believe them". EBJ has shown us who she is and I choose to believe her. Why continue to be represented by her for even one more term? Doesn't seem "logical"

I'm going to give someone new a chance. If they don't work out, we'll just choose someone else in 2 years. EBJ's behavior is truly disgusting; we deserve better.

Dem-o-graphic

I am very concerned over Clayton's willingness to cave in over the keystone pipeline as well.

His website holds no clues to what or who he really is other than a few catch phrases that mean nothing.

Looks like Tea Party Taj would be Typhoid Taj for the environment.

wilson82
wilson82

LOL... Yes, the Texas Democrats against the Keystone Pipeline! ... except that the Keystone pipeline would actually benefit Texans substantially... and the only hold-up for Democrats IS the environmental concerns.  Anyone that thinks Democrats categorically oppose Keystone is poorly informed. You know that Obama already approved the vast majority of the pipeline, right?

I'll give you a "B+" for alliterationUnfortunately, you get an "F" in reading comprehension.Keep trying and you'll get there...

Dem-o-graphic
Dem-o-graphic

You and Typhoid Taj get an F on the Environment. Perhaps you want a rep that is week on the environment, pro big oil, big corporations. But that is not what most responsible individuals want. Perhaps it is you and Typhoid Taj who need to read up on the issue of the migratory bird nesting grounds that will be disturbed and the potential for damage to the water aquifers before he commits to such a hazardous course.

wilson82
wilson82

Um yeah... perhaps you should read up on where Democrats stand on the issue.  That's current events.  Perhaps you should figure out what it means when a candidate, or sitting President says "I think we need to study the environmental impacts before we approve the final stages". That's reading comprehension.  Do you even know what "Typhoid" is? I mean, it was cute the first time but it really is a poor choice of a T- word.  Back to the books...

I'm always a little cautious about politicians like Taj who come out of nowhere at election time and ask for your vote.  Republican plant or not, his visible history in this area is just too...fabled???  If he develops a more visible profile and some visible initiatives for an electorate...maybe he can go to Congress after the next election - not the one coming up next week.  I mean...where have you been all your life Taj???

scottindallas
scottindallas

Not sure those with a high profile are doing much, other than serving themselves.  I don't trust those who are always "striving to do good, and just want to help you out."  Find an asshole and you'll be better treated.  Don't trust ANYONE who refuses or hides the costs/consequences of policies.  If we embraced that one idea alone, it would do more to reform this nation.  For it is us, who refuse to accept any cost or consequence that demand politicos hoodwink and betray us.

skelly

Well... just looking at his website and it seems like he's been doing quite a bit...

He serves on the board of the Dallas Children's theater and volunteers at a couple of local charities. I can't remember exactly where I saw it but in 2008, he helped to raise $25,000 for the Obama campaign. His family has lived here for almost 20 years and he chose to move back here after Harvard Law School to raise his own children.

Personally, I think the fact that he moved back to DeSoto when he could be somewhere like NYC living the high life says a lot about someone. Big picture, I think doing the little things can mean a lot more than trying to "raise his profile" to make sure everyone knows all he does.

Eric, the Hotel, the Bridge, and the arts center are all big pinko projects.  You don't really need to delve in rank speculation--look at the facts and record.  The eliding of gov't and private sectors is rife with corruption, kickbacks and the selling off of monopolies to the private sector.  You could have done some real reporting, but sadly opted for some crotch kicks.

wilson82
wilson82

Wow, a lot of political wisdom here in the comments...

Toby:      The super PAC that is attacking EBJ (which is not the same thing as supporting Clayton) is clearly bipartisan. It attacks both Republicans and Democrats that have a poor record of performance. EBJ's campaign wants to call it "right wing" as if it has nothing to do with her scholarship scandal. Regarding the Keystone pipeline, Clayton's remarks were exactly in line with Obama's position on the pipeline. Democrats aren't against the pipeline; they just don't want to fast track it without investigating environmental impacts. Anyone who actually pays attention to the news already knows this.

Ruthann:      Sorry, but how has Clayton been "sniveling"? When someone tells a blatant lie about him is he just supposed to sit around quietly and not address it? Is that what leaders do? Is that how he should "man up"?

Guess what: he doesn't have to compare himself to Obama. Reporters and bloggers and pundits are doing it for him. In fact, the recent Huffington Post article covering this race made a specific point that Obama faced the exact same types of attacks in 2000 that Clayton is facing now.

sinclain & BenjiK:     Apparently "false equivalence" isn't just for Republicans anymore. Ads criticizing EBJ for her scholarship scandal and mailers calling Clayton a Tea Party plant are nowhere near comparable. EBJ is being attacked by a bipartisan super PAC that is going after incumbents on both sides of the aisle. It is involved in multiple congressional races and clearly has no connection to Clayton. "Friends United", on the other hand, was started by a former EBJ staffer that held a fundraiser for EBJ THIS ELECTION CYCLE!!! It was apparently formed to do absolutely nothing other than send out a misleading mailer about Clayton. EBJ's fingerprints are all over it.  Perhaps more importantly, EBJ's scholarship scandal is a plain and simple FACT for which she has been criticized by everyone, liberals and conservatives. On the other hand, claiming that Clayton is "secretly a Republican" is an obvious bit of nonsense that has been panned unanimously by partial observers.

That said, let's REALLY compare how the candidates have responded to opposition. First, if you've actually been paying attention to this race, you'll notice that Clayton has NEVER attacked EBJ. Not once. All he has done has been to challenge her for a primary election.  How does EBJ respond? She PANICS!  She lashes out with personal attacks against Caraway. She spreads lies about Clayton. Since when is calling a lie a lie considered "whining"? The funny thing is that despite these ridiculous attacks, Clayton STILL hasn't gone negative. Have you ever heard or seen in print the word "scandal" attributed to Clayton?  He has remained positive despite the lies and falsehoods.

So we have two leading candidates here: EBJ panics when threatened while Clayton remains positive despite unfair attacks. Which of these truly sounds more like a leader?

Sinclair
Sinclair

Right wing Super PAC attacks EBJ, EBJ callas it out... Democrat Super PAC reports what has been reported by the San Antonio Express, Politico, Washington Post etc and Clayton whines that it is to rough for him. Clasyton needs to grow a backbone. He clearly has been caught being funded by donors who traditionally fund right wing causes. He is only sorry he has been caught and exposed.

wilson82
wilson82

Sinclair, sorry but are you joking?

"Right wing super PAC attacks EBJ, EBJ calls it out"... Ok, what do you mean she "calls it out"?  Calls what out, exactly? Why don't you call this "whining"? Either way, any attacks about the scholarship scandal are completely legitimate. She did it. She got caught. Then she lied about it. Then more evidence surfaced. Then she eventually fully copped to it.

If this is such a "Right Wing Super PAC", why are they attacking just as many Republican incumbents as they are attacking Democrats? Also, how are they funding Clayton?  They're involved in numerous races across the country.

EBJ's Super PAC is CLEARLY connected to her. It was started by someone who held a fundraiser for her for THIS ELECTION and it has done nothing but attack Clayton. Many articles, including the article on this very page called her out on it.

Where did Clayton say anything was "too rough for him"? I just watched a video where he specifically told his supporters to not get upset about the lies and to stay positive. In my book, it takes a whole lot more "backbone" to stay positive than it does to panic.

Cut with the clowning.  Seriously. If you REALLY think EBJ has the best interest of her constituents at heart, just say that's what you think.  If you REALLY think EBJ is still working hard as a PUBLIC SERVANT, just say that's what you think. If you REALLY think that nothing needs to be changed about the way Dallas is represented, just say that's what you think.

The truth is, you're just as trasparent as EBJ's bogus mailer. We get it. Anyone who claims that they can't find ANY fault in EBJ's track record or her behavior in this election is pretty obviously part of her campaign. Either that or they would rather be willfully ignorant than admit that they've ever made a mistake. Has she done some good things over the years? Definitely. But don't tell me she has been valiant or strong in the scope of this campaign. Is Clayton the perfect candidate?  Of course not. But please come up with something better than "he's a Republican". It's pathetic.

Factcheck
