Deion Sanders' Prime Prep Academy Has Registered 1,100 Students and Counting

deon_inside.jpg
Is it any wonder that Prime Prep Academy, the charter school hyped by Deion Sanders, is accepting triple the number of students that most charter schools accept in their first year? Everything about the place has been propped up with hopeful grandeur. Sanders, the school's co-founder and spokesperson (though he has no official roll as a board member or school leader), and his business partner, D.L. Wallace, have promised parental wish-fulfillment of the highest order. Your child will have the best of the best here, they've said repeatedly.

This week's Observer feature story reveals the shadowy underbelly of the educational bastion of inner city hope, where a history of shady dealings casts questions about whether all that's been promised will indeed come to pass. But so far, the school is forging ahead, as a news release dispatched yesterday reveals that Prime Prep accepted over 1,100 students and continues enrollment.

Charter schools are funded by the state on a per-student basis, based on average daily attendance. School leaders determine the maximum attendance, planning and controlling a school's growth. When and if the determined maximum is reached, they turn to a lottery system for student selection. Prime Prep leaders have said that the two campuses can each accommodate up to 750 students.

Prime Prep's founders credit their technological offerings for the sky-high enrollment. "The high enrollment numbers we are experiencing show how eager parents are to place their children in this hi-tech and fast-paced digital learning environment, and we are honored to serve them," Wallace, the school's chairman, says in the release.

"These parents are realizing that they have options, and they are choosing Prime Prep for their children. We're going to exceed their expectations by providing their children with the best educational experience possible," Sanders adds.

The school's founders have promised first-rate technology, laptops for each and every student, top-notch gifted and talented programs, special education classes, athletics, extracurriculars, healthy lunches, free after-school tutoring and everything else a parent could possibly dream.

The press release touting the high enrollment was distributed by VSCHOOLZ, the Florida-based company that is outfitting Prime Prep with student computers, classroom technology, and curriculum resources. Prime Prep leaders have been using the technology as a major talking and selling point of the school. While 1,100 students is more than most charter schools admit in their inaugural year, Prime Prep is still accepting applications.

Why do you say "low-tech teachers".  What proof do you have of that?  I am a parent who is looking.

Deion Sanders has not contributed a dime to this school.  The sponsors list was a lie.  The State and Federal monies alone are insufficient to open a school, especially a high-tech school.  The building at 330 E. Ann Arbor is dilapidated and in need of much repair.  And worst of all, D.L. Wallace is a confirmed scam artist.  This whole thing is a lie!  I feel sorry for the parents who sign their children up to attend this school, because they are in for a rude awakening.  By the way, has anyone verified these enrollment numbers.  If D.L. Wallace made this claim, then it's probably not true.

You are really obsessed with Mr. Sanders work although you have no children.  I can tell by the way you write that you have no children,  Why are you so interested in this?  Did someone "plant" you here.

You are so right Blackman. Deion is such a fraud and joke. Hell, he can't be a good role model for his own kids. Playing his kids against their mother is unforgivable. Have anyone viewed his daughter twitter account. She's a foul mouth malcontent that constantly talks about money. I wonder where she got that from.  I read about this D.L. Wallace character and this Bishop Mays fellow. These family have not done their homework on this school and these gentlemen. They are all conman novices masquerading as educators. I bet anyone a million dollars its money involved. The sad part is they're using these kids for that reason.

What amazes me is that you skeptics have so much to say and ponder without the doors even opening. Here's a thought: What if...this school actually succeeds in its first year? Then what? And what are YOU doing? Are you making moves to improve the education in public and private schools? Are you making sure that the classrooms are fit with dynamic teachers?

Skeptic here, so I'll answer your questions.I have 4 kids, 3 of which are in public school. I take part in PTA, Watchdogs(go to www.fathers.com if you're interested), and coach them in their sports. Their mother usually does their homework with them before I get home, but we read a book together before bed. Making sure the classrooms are fit with dynamic teachers? I've been extremely happy with all the teachers at my kids school(well with the exception of one), so I don't know how to answer that question for you, Dave.

The reason I'm skeptical? To bring a school from the ground up without things like real estate, hardware, and teachers under contract, those are pretty essential. Especially when we're talking about 1100 students in k-12. There are some great articles listed above if you'd like to catch up on everything.

So you have surrendered your children to the government school. Congratutions, your kids will be be working for mine in the near future.

My kids will be getting 5-10x the education the kids at prime prep academy will be getting. I don't care if my kids schools don't have the best sports teams, but they'll get a great education through Plano ISD.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.  Age old and cliched wisdom, but relevant here I would think.

Questions I have:1. What is the teacher to student ratio or will be?2. There are no pictures of campuses, we were told about Charity Church housing a campus, is that the elementary or high school?3. Will they compete athletically in a private school league? Have they even applied? It's May and I don't see any information on that anywhere other than that they will offer JV and Varsity sports.

I'm sure I'll think of more, but those stick out to me.

So what about this really makes people wonder if it will succeed ?So I will add my questions..

Have they ordered any of the Gizmos and Gadgets ? Certainly a partnership of Selling 1000 + Plus Computers and accessory's to PRIME s institution would certainly warrant A press conference We are talking Deion here.

Food services?

What about the Desks and Lockers ?

Churches and Schools are close not the same when it comes to Fire and Safety standards .
