Dallas PD: Katy Trail Robbery Suspects Are in Their 20s and Considerably Armed

The Katy Trail
Question: Is Jim Schutze a prophet, or does does the city just go to him for its marching orders? Just a few short hours ago, he was grousing about the piddling response by the Dallas Police Department to a string of armed robberies on the Katy Trail.

Immediately DPD officers, who we presume were breathlessly refreshing Unfair Park for Jim's thoughts, jumped into action. Exactly 165 minutes after Jim's column hit the Interwebs (hey, police work takes time), the department posted a description of the assailants on its Facebook page.

Police say they are looking for two black males, believed to be behind 14 recent robberies, four of them on the Katy Trail. One is described as being 20 to 30 years old, between 5-feet-8-inches and 6-feet-2 inches tall and about 160 pounds. The second is 20 to 22 years old, between 5-feet-8-inches and 5-feet-10-inches tall, also about 160 pounds. They were seen driving gray/silver four-door sedan that may be a Chrysler or Chevy Impala.

Oh, and they're carrying semi-automatic handguns.

Buried in the department's release, in apparent response to its public shaming by Jim, is the following: "The Police Department must continually balance the need to inform the public against releasing information that could jeopardize the investigation and potential suspect identification."

And by the way I would even help you liberal's, regardless of race, sex, or age. CRIMINALS DO NOT DICTATE HOW WE ARE TO LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you are that afraid, crawl in a hole, live in a hole, die in that hole, buried in that hole!!!!!!!!!!! Then the bad guy wins.

WEAR A PEACE SYMBOL NECKLACE, AND WE WILL LET YOU TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF WITHOUT INTERFERING....NO NEED TO FORCE ANYONE TO BE SAFE WHEN THEIR PERSONAL WISDOM AND SHARP WIT ARE LOADED FOR BEAR.  HOPE YOU GET A CHANCE TO SPEAK NICELY AND PEACEABLY WITH ANY ROBBERS....TIME IS SHORT WHEN THE GUY IS PLANNING TO GET RID OF WITNESSES TOO.

It should just be blanket rule that you stop using Katy Trail when it is dark. We need to catch these two losers, but adults need to engage brains before they act. DPD could have broadcast the above guidance after the first incident. The only possible destination is Victory Park. If you can afford to live there, you can afford a cab.

Kythas

Why should you concede and surrender Katy Trail to the criminals? Arm yourself and defend what's yours. Stand up for yourself and other law-abiding citizens. Don't give in to the criminals.

If more people fought the crooks we'd have a much better city.

Sure, why tax honest citizens just to pay cops when we could all be packin' instead.  For greater effect it should be open carry, not concealed, don'tcha think?

There are some who would be stupid enough to tell the bad guy, "Wait before you rob, rape or murder me, let me get an officer of the law here so it will be a little more even, OK?".......................................Oh and by the way; that last sound someone hears is the bad guys weapon being discharged and that little ole round blowing your brain-matter all over the Katy Trail. But have no fear, when the PD get there they'll take a report, fill out the paper work and hopefully that amount of work might finish out their shift so they can go home to the wife and kids while, the coroner hauls the dead jogger to the M.E.'s office and places him/her on a hard stainless steel table. THAT IS REALITY OF WHAT A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF BAD PEOPLE DO FOR OUR SOCIETY. I have never looked for trouble, (well there was that time on TODO St. Saigon in '68 but that's another story) but I am prepared if it comes head on with me. Then I'll dial 911 and tell them to send the M.E. and a cop in that order.

Also; I was born and raised here, back in the 40's, 50's, 60's you could go **anywhere** in this city and No one would rob you, you Could and we DID leave our homes unlocked, doors open at night for the breeze, and no one would walk in, Those were the days when    people respected one another, and people knew if you broke the law you were immediately punished, or very soon afterward. AHHHHHHH those g'ood old days!!!!!!!!!!!!When folks knew what and when and where you did and did not do this shit!!

That damn fool was a fellow journalist and we were covering the riot, and -- thinking real hard, now -- I was pretty sure he was going to shoot a rioter and then we were really be in the soup. He was also a bit of a hot-head and tended to see everyone as either a "sheep" or a "wolf" (see above comments). It's not that I worry about you committing a violent crime, Sacman. It's that I wonder when and under what circumstances you're going to whip out that gun and start shooting. I wonder what you're going to hit and who's going to be standing around, and where those bullets are going to end up. Also, Sacman, I'd LOVE to know the source of your figures on carjackings in Dallas.

billmarvel
billmarvel

Kythas,I'm grateful to you for your service in the Army and as a cop. I'm more than a little uneasy, however, about civilians running around with guns, concealed or otherwise, claiming to protect me and my family. Especially civilians with a touch of paranoia, who see every person they encounter as either a sheep or a wolf.Collect guns? Fine. Hunt? That's great. Target shoot? Wonderful. Otherwise keep 'em in a locked cabinet.

Sacmankc135
Sacmankc135

Was that *damn fool* as you put it going to get you killed by shooting you, or were you going to get killed by one in the riot??  Think real hard back on the situation, and tell us , did you not feel a slight relief someone in your car had a weapon in case it went bad on your car's occupants? I too am at the age of 70 and yes I do have a CDL, and you know what having that piece of paper does not brainwash me into going out committing a violent crime!! Remember back a year before the CDL passed, car jackin's in Dallas (and I am not referring to any one area) were at least a hundred a month, the day after they passed the Bill, car jackin's went down in Dallas 99% and are still down. When and how many car jackin's have you heard about in the past year alone in Dallas. Before it passed they were constantly on the news, now you don't see them on there anymore.

Kythas
Kythas

There are three types of people in the world. There are the sheep, which are kind, gentle, productive creatures who can harm each other only by accident. The vast majority of people fall into this category.

There are the wolves. These are the people who prey on the sheep without mercy. These are evil people who are without remorse, and you had better believe they are out there. Sheep have some vague notion that the wolves exist, but believe they will never come into contact with one.

There are the sheepdogs. Sheepdogs protect the flock and confront the wolves.

Enjoy being one of the sheep. There is nothing wrong with being a sheep as, indeed, the vast majority of people are sheep.  I will remain a sheepdog, as I have been both in the Army and as a cop, and I will continue to do my best to protect you and those like you from the wolves.

billmarvel

Kyth,I gotta ask, what kind of wild life do you and your family lead that you feel the need to go armed? Are you diamond dealers or somethng? 70 years in Denver, that well-known center of violence Washington, D.C., and Dallas, and not once did I feel the need of a gun to protect myself or my family. The only time I ever felt in danger was during a riot in Denver when another fellow in my car quietly drew, but did not display his .45. I was sure the damn fool was going to get us killed.

Sacmankc135
Sacmankc135

I would like one of you liberal minded robots to please tell everyone here **with the facts**, the Last Time an individual who has a CCW went on a shooting spree in TEXAS, much less a armed robbery. .............................WAITINGYOU DO NOT NEED A CCW TO COMMIT CRIME!! You do need however; to get your scum ass blown to hell if you try to commit a crime against an individual who has a CCW. Regardless of age, race, sex. Take into mind that whatever race they are was not the doing of the defender, but rather his/her parents.

Kythas
Kythas

billmarvel,Who protects you from them now? I promise they're all around you. At the movie theater. At the restaurant. At the grocery store. At Wal-Mart. Do you feel intimidated now when you're out in public by the thousands of people who are already carrying a concealed handgun? Where are the shoot outs by the people who are "looking for trouble"? Where is the blood running in the streets?

People carry because they want to protect themselves and those they love, not because they are itching to pop a cap in someone's ass. In Texas, as you obviously don't know, the CHL classes include a segment on conflict de-escalation so you can AVOID situations where you may have to shoot someone. People with a concealed handgun license in Texas are almost 2.5 times less likely than the general public to be arrested for ANY offense, according to the Texas Dept of Public Safety.

This is true not just in Texas, but also in the other 48 States that allow concealed carry. Illinois is the ONLY state in the country that has no concealed carry laws on the books. EVERY other state allows concealed carry. Texas is one of only six (yes, SIX) states which doesn't allow the open carry of a firearm. I will ask you again: Where are all the shoot outs?

Cities with the strongest gun control laws (Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington DC, New York City, Baltimore) also have among the highest crime rates. States which passed shall-issue concealed carry laws have seen a larger drop in their crime rates than the national average. The facts don't fit your alarmist rhetoric.

billmarvel
billmarvel

Kythass,And who's going to protect me from a couple thousand pistol-packing testosterone-fueled  gun nuts out there on the Katy Trail just spoiling for a fight? Because you don't carry a gun unless you're looking for trouble, and if you're looking for trouble of course you're going to find it. Say what you want, the mind-set of people who pack side-arms is different. It just is. Open carry is not about protection. It's about intimidation. It says, Don't mess with me. Ever find yourself in a bar next to some dude who just bristles with Don't Mess with Me attitude? How comfortable that make you feel.?

Kythas
Kythas

Ideally, we would be allowed to open carry, yes. But, we can't.

You have to realize that the police have no responsibility to protect you individually. Their responsibility is to society as a whole. (see Warren v District of Columbia and DeShaney v Winnebago County Dept of Social Services).

The first police forces in the United States weren't instituted until 1835 with the New York City Police Department. Even then, the police were intended to augment citizen self-protection, not replace it. Their intent is to deter crime by patrolling and apprehending criminals after the commission of a crime.

There are only about 500,000 police officers in the United States. Divide that into three shifts, where each cop would work 7 days per week, and that gives you about 166,666 on duty police officers to protect a population of 286 million citizens. Give the cops two days off per week and you're looking at just under 56,000 on-duty police officers at any given time, nationwide. There simply aren't enough police to protect every individual American, even if that were their duty.

Besides, would you actually defer your own physical safety and well being to a third party?

Pee Eye Oh
Pee Eye Oh

The elephant in the room is not the ethnicity of the suspects but DPD's decision to sit on the info about the attacks vs making them public --- during which time three more people were victimized.

DPD was lucky none of the most recent victims were shot.

Sad part about all of this is that the department now has a larger PIO operation than it ever has --- while it puts out LESS information than before.

Under the previous administration PIO = Public Information Officers. -Now? Public Information Obstructionists.

This will end badly unless someone above the City Manager's paygrade (ie The Mayor) orders a course correction ---- and I am not optimistic that will happen.

bill marvel
bill marvel

To put this into perspective: It is not at all uncommon for a police department to withhold information about a series of crimes if it believes the same perp is behind all the offenses. The idea is to build up enough information to see a pattern that can be used by patrols, stake-outs, and undercover officers, making it more likely the culprit will be caught. This serves the police, often leading to an arrest. But it doesn't always serve the public, which goes about its business uninformed and unwarned. The instinct of newspaper reporters who stumble upon these operations, usually by reading offense reports and noting similarities or by picking up scufflebutt around a police station, is to rush a story into print. Sometimes a police official will ask an editor to hold off the story until an arrest. Most editors will balance the likelihood that withholding information endangers the public against the possibility that running the story will derail a police investigation and allow the criminal to go free. What if publication of the story causes the perp to change his patterns, move to another city, or stop leaving live witnesses? What if the situation is an ongoing kidnapping, with the victim's life at stake?  Any reporter who regularly covers police likely has found himself in the middle of one of these dilemmas. Would a timely warning from police to avoid Katy Trail during certain hours, without detail on the robberies, suffice? Has publication of the details caused the robbers to move on to some other neighborhood, where they are unwatched-for and unexpected?Things are not nearly as clear-cut or as easily resolved as Pee Eye Oh or Jim Schutze, would have us believe.

Young black guys with guns.Yep.Couldn't be more than 2 of em in Dallas. They'll definitely lie low now.

IBelieveMyOwnLyingEyes
IBelieveMyOwnLyingEyes

Actually, young thuggish black guys are extremely uncommon along the Katy trail -- it's almost as though jogging, power-walking, road-biking in Spandex, etc., aren't things that young black thugs like to do.

Obviously, the Buppie (=black yuppie) crowd on the Katy Trail who jog / bike / power walk in Spandex are perfectly at home there, as much as the predominantly white group who do the same thing.

But if you see a young dude with his boxers on display, or that characteristically thuggish hard-eyed stare, loitering around (as opposed to power-walking in Spandex), or approaching for conversation -- which joggers etc. don't do on the Katy Trail as they're too busy exercising/texting/etc. -- then yes, it is perfectly reasonable to be scared and/or not approach him.

That kind of dude actually is a rara avis on the Katy Trail.  So it is useful to be reminded that -- SHOCKER -- young thuggish black dudes who are loitering around and not in exercise gear do indeed commit armed robberies, just as you would rationally expect them to do.

I have the following statement from the Dallas Police Department:

"We read Jim Schutze's comedy routine all the time.  We have found that his writing is on our reading level.  Before he wrote specifically about the Katy Trail robberies, we could only speculate about what Schutze would want us to do.  We assumed that since he wants Dallas to be like Detroit, that allowing the crime rate to increase through gross inaction would be to his liking."

In the view of the media, these stories are literally "dog bites man."   There's a new one every day, and what does the public care about something as trivial as the rape of a 77 year old woman?

In contrast, the Trayvon Martin case is "man bites dog," so the media are immediately on the loose on the hunt for the Ahab-like Great White Defendant -- but of course, the shooter turns out to be Hispanic there too...

Hate to be the one to inform you, but "libtard" no longer has any meaning -- if it ever did -- except to a small circle of dullards who have lost the ability to think in any but the most tired catch-phrases and cliches. It's intended to invoke the words "liberal" and "retard." Except those who use it have no more idea what "liberal" really means than they do of quantum theory or the Albigensian heresy. As for "retard," well, the word speaks for itself and for those who use it. Unless you want to be branded as hopelessly ignorant and out of touch, find some other label for those with whom you disagree.

Elderly woman raped, suspect charged

Monday, 07 May 2012

FOLEY, Ala. (WALA) - Foley Police arrested a teen suspected of  beating and raping a 77-year-old woman in her Foley home last week.Authorities arrested 19-year-old Stephen Scott and charged him with first degree rape and burglary.Investigators said the incident happened Thursday, May 3 at around 12:15 a.m.Police said the victim told investigators a man broke into her home on West Myrtle Avenue through the back door and dragged her into a bedroom. That’s when police said the teenager beat, choked, and raped the victim.”Any rape is very bad and one especially with an elderly person is just heartbreaking,” said Foley Police Chief David Wilson. The victim told officers that she had seen the suspect in the area for the past several months.“He had been in the neighborhood before looking for work. And someone had called the police on him while he was going door to door looking for work,” said Chief Wilson. After the responding officers researched that call, investigators identified Scott as the suspect.Several neighbors told FOX10 news they also recognized Scott. One neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, said she believes Scott was the person who tried to sell her an alarm system.“Asked me just uh, ‘Do you have a security system?’ Of course I didn't answer him one way or the other if I did or if I didn’t.”Several neighbors said they had similar encounters with Scott. One neighbor remembered him going door-to-door to find a lost dog, while another recalled him looking for work.Chief Wilson said it is important to call police when you see something suspicious.“Nowadays when people are going door to door, you don't know what they’re really there for. A lot of times, they can be casing out your house either to burglarize it or do something terrible like this guy did,” said Wilson.Authorities said Scott lives on the same block as the victim.Scott is charged with first-degree rape and first-degree burglary. According to the jail log, Scott remains in jail with $275,000 for the burglary and rape charges and no bond for a probation violation.Officials said the victim was transported to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center where she was treated and released.
