Josh Hamilton Hit Four Homeruns Tonight

Categories: Sports

"The Josh Hamilton relapse: What does it mean?" one headline blared, after Hamilton got drunk at a Dallas bar earlier this year. "Hamilton's slip could cost him millions," another professed. And we all thought: Sure, that makes sense. A couple teams get scared off, demand drops, price drops.

But there's some level of performance that erases that variable from Hamilton's future value. (He's in the final year of his contract.) There has to be. I don't know if four homeruns in one night does the trick, especially this early in the season. But it's definitely a start.

give him a few weeks.  he will get hurt or be a dummy and drive the price back down.  love the guy and marvel at his ability.  i want him here, but wouldnt offer him more than 5 years with big paydays up front.

Wait two weeks.

It was an incredible performance, yes. But one game out of 162. He's 30 games in to a great season, but he's also missed 3 games. And let's not forget he was kinda meh last season. My point? I like the guy, I want him here, but I don't want to see the Rangers backing up the armored car for him when there's still a good chance he won't ever play 145 games in a season, especially as he gets older.

Of course he's worth $20 million a year for the next 2 or 3 years, but what if they're having to shell out that much in 2016/17/18 when he's on the DL every other month and slowing down?

His contract needs to be filled with all sorts of performance clauses, whether it's games played or plate appearances or something, but the Rangers need a way out of huge obligations 4+ years down the road. Let some other team screw up their future finances if he won't sign for a Ranger-friendly contract.

Wow. That kind of performance is just unbelievable. You can't even do that on a video game on rookie level.I have faith in JD to get it done. What do you think it will cost? 8 for 160?

A timely sports story in The Observer?!

I used to think watching Josh was akin to watching The Mick; that may be changing to watching The Babe.......sign this man now.  He is the face of the most popular regime in team history.  Back up the truck, knock on the door, dump out the cash.

8 fer 160 is what I've been saying it'll take every since Werth got his contract.  Newberg thinks it could start at 5 for 100 with clauses based upon playing time kicking in the extra years.  I don't think that works, the MLB players union would shit...Hambone is going to get paid, and he may get paid like that scrub in LAA.

pros:Hamilton has been good citizen despite one day off-the-wagon off season episodes.Rangers this year 87% capacity attendance so far with limited single tickets available for this weekend series.Hamilton currently leading MLB in triple crown stats.

cons:Werth might be out all year with a broken wrist.Werth was out 2006 with similar injury.I'm sure everyone is doing a rethink on that contract now.

Hamilton has been shown to be injury prone and is also hitting in front of Beltre and Young . He would not be as valuable to another team averaging 118 games/year where he could be pitched around.

He could have one of the best years EVER.  The players union would be up in arms if he did 5/100.I don't have any problem with him getting paid what Pujols is, just for less years. A 10 year contract is just stupid, the Rangers have gotten screwed by that once already.  I don't see him giving them a hometown discount and I don't blame him. The guy plays all out and chances are he won't be playing at 70% of his current level by year 6 of any contract he signs.
