Justice the Puppy's Alleged Killer's Bail Cut in Half; Rev. Wright Says That's Not Enough

Justice.
Darius Ewing, the 18-year-old black man who surrendered to Dallas Police after the death of the stray lab-terrier puppy Justice, saw his bail dropped from $100,000 to $50,000 at a hearing last week. Justice died on April 13, a little more than a week after the puppy was unsuccessfully hanged then set on fire.

The ruling comes as a victory for Ewing, as well as South Dallas activist Reverend Ronald Wright, who called Ewing's original bail amount "excessive." When citizens found about Wright's involvement in the case a few weeks ago, many animal lovers and Wright haters called or email him to spew vitriol.

"I am a very open person," one woman said in a voicemail. "But I call you the 'N-word' right now."

Wright suspects the stance even led to the death of his own dog, Sadie, a two-year-old German shepherd found dead in Wright's backyard on May 4. According to a friend in animal control, the dog was most likely poisoned, Wright said.

Still, Wright's not satisfied with the reduced bail.

"We're not happy," Wright said. "It should be even lower." His claim is that some men get lower bonds for killing men, let alone torturing animals. He points to a precedent in early-January last year when a 57-year-old man named Thomas Lindsey was arrested for torturing three dogs.

There was witness on the scene who saw Lindsey, who's white, spray three dogs with poison. According to Wright, two of the dogs died. Lindsey was arrested and charged with three counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals. He was released on a $3,000 bond and has yet to stand trial.

"If it's justice, it should be done all across the board."

Animal advocates in this area are outraged about the death of the rev's dog.  Animal advocates do NOT harm and/or kill animals, regardless of how much they may disagree with the pet's owner on an issue.  I understand the rev did not report this to DPD - did not seek an investigation into her death and has not taken any steps to find out who did it.  Kind of makes a person wonder - - -

Regarding the big brave puppy killer - a detective testified in court that in a three-way phone call among the detective, Ewing and the mother of a friend that was trying to help the puppy killer, Ewing said, and I quote: "Fuck you! Fuck you! Suck my dick. Come and get me."  His facebook pages showed him "throwing" gang signs, wearing the gang colors and in several of them, he and his gang banger pals were "praying" over tables filled with guns, dope and money.  He listed his occupation as "pharmacist for the Money Mafia."  Right rev - you just keep trying to get him out from behind those steel bars.  Personally, I hope he rots behind them - right where he belongs.

Holy crap!  i didn't see the openly racist post down there from "Celebrate Divershitty" who wrote:"There are just soooo many rich vibrant amazing benefits of Divershitty to celebrate!"BLAMING ALL BLACK PEOPLE FOR THIS ACT. Mr. Howard, thanks for including the reaction from the racists like the one that wanted to call the Rev. Wright a "Ni#*er." PLEASE keeping an eye on all aspects of this story, including the explosion of racist hatred from neanderthals like the commenter quoted above.

"I am a very open person," one woman said in a voicemail. "But I call you the 'N-word' right now." A textbook example that much of the anger being expressed has NOTHING to do with animal welfare. It has turned from rightful indignation at the killing of a dog into racist hatred being spewed at a Black perpetrator. Racist vitriol that led to KILLING A DOG, SUPPOSEDLY BECAUSE OF ANGER AT KILLING A DOG! I beg EVERYBODY involved in this case, from animal rights groups to civil rights groups to citizens and reporters and headline writers and commenters on the internet, to be VERY careful in their language on this story. Let's please not allow the racists to hijack this story and turn the hate towards all Black people instead of those of all races who hurt all animals, not just this one. This story now truly encompasses some of the worst aspects of American society, from hideous violence against animals to proud and open racism.

So the white guy gets off easy or whatever. What does that matter when it comes to what happened to this dog? Every time I see Justice's picture I am filled with rage.

Yes, if a white sick-fuck is held to a different standard than a black sick-fuck that is an injustice to the black sick-fuck. However, it in no way makes the actions of either of them less despicable.

Let the idiot sit in jail until his trial and see the results of his behavior. Also, let his poverty pimp of a lawyer quit making excuses by trying to compare him to imaginary white people he thinks are bonding out of jail on a rape/murder raps at a lower dollar amount, which isnt happening..

In other words: Rev. Wright needs to gets his facts straight before he speaks to the media..

What is this, the final exam in your Soren Kierkegaard honors graduate seminar? Is it that tough to figure? Two dog killers, white guy and a black guy. White guy gets $3,000 bail. Black guy gets $100,000 bail. This is grade school arithmetic. The answer to the problem at the bottom of the page is "racism."

"According to Wright, two of the dogs died"...

According to the woman who owned the dogs, they didn't die.  Just keeping Wright, right.  Thomas Lindsay deserves much harsher punishment and much higher bond, as his attack on the three dogs also injured the owner of the dogs.  It appears from reading blogs about it, the ADA who handled the case stalled, tried to get the owner to drop charges, even badgered the owner.  So, while Wright is overblowing the facts of the case, he does appear to be correct that it is a severe travesty of justice that Lindsey is out on $3k bond, and this kid has $50k.  Both of them probably deserve the $100k bond.

Kid is not so tough now that he's hanging out with the big boys in the county lockup.  I'm guessing most of them regard him as they do child molesters.

At first I thought it said that the puppy's alleged killer had been cut in half.  This made me happy.

There are a great many issues that could be addressed in the criminal justice system. This man's bail is a low priority. I hope animals rights activists and other interested citizens keep this story in the headlines and make sure this individual does not receive a slap on the wrist. He is a menace to society. As for the other individual, I would need to know more about his case before it would be appropriate to make a comment concerning his bail. If anyone has more information let's have it. Let's revisit Reverend Wright's role in all this after this young man kills someone because that is where this is headed.

I don't care what his bail is as long as he can't afford to pay it.

I tend to think that there's a bit of difference between spraying three dogs with some sort of poison as opposed to trying to hang and dog and, once that failed, setting it on fire.  Yes, both perps are twisted, but one's methods are quite a bit more depraved than the other's.  Could that be a factor in the difference in bail from one case to the next?

"Celebrate Divershitty" is pretty much ignored around these parts because he/she doesn't bring much to the table other than the same tired old quote that is most times inapplicable as in this story where you have white/black animal cruelty perpetrators.

It is not really news that there are average dolts that can make racist remarks.

not sure that's racism in and of itself.  What, are you the thought police?  I don't like racism, and think it needs to be challenged.  But, what do you propose we do about such things?  Denouncing it is good, if you're so moved, but what else?

RTGolden
RTGolden

You may indeed be correct Jim, that racism is the reason for the disparity in bonds.  However, in chasing that herring, you've lost sight of the real victims.  If this kid is guilty of what happened to the dog, then this kid is not a victim, but a criminal.  There are people still, after two years, going after Lindsay.  The owner of the dogs he sprayed with chemicals (who was also injured at the time) is not going to let it drop. These stories are not about race, but about humanity, accountability, responsibility.  In both cases humanity was absent, in one case accountability went AWOL (thank you DA's office), and in neither case has responsibility been met.

As I recall, the injury to Justice received far more publicity over the other three dogs' poisoning by the local media, The Observer included. So the heightened severity had its roots in the initial reaction.

A reaction based upon breedism rather than racism.

I felt like a terrible person for feeling the same way, right before I remembered that I haven't set a happy, loving, trusting, helpless animal on fire at any point in my life.

Thats what I thought. Both are sick crimes, but setting a dog on fire then laughing with a crowd of your fellow low-hanging fruits to me seems the worst of the two evils..

It's not hard to imagine or assume that poisoning is less cruel and torturous than burning a dog.  It may not be, but it seems less malicious.

why is it people who scream "RACIST" can't be any more eloquent than to add some tired old profanity?  Are you expressing your own thoughts or just jumping on the hate bandwagon?   Why does it always have to be racist?  Evil is evil no matter what skin it's in.  Too easy to cry racist- thinking and forming your own conclusions actually requires work.
