Rep. Kenny Marchant: Endorsed by Ron Paul! (In 2010! That Still Counts, Right?) (Updated)

Categories: Politics

In the spirit of a Republican primary season marked by gleeful kneecapping, Grant Stinchfield, a former NBC 5 investigative reporter running for Congress, has discovered that his opponent, incumbent Kenny Marchant, claimed some endorsements from politicos who aren't actually behind him in the race for the largely conservative, suburban 24th District straddling Dallas, Tarrant and Denton counties.

Chief among those is Congressman Ron Paul, perennial presidential candidate. In an email to Unfair Park from Paul campaign manager Jesse Benton, he confirms that the good doctor has not, in fact, endorsed Marchant for the 2012 election.

"Dr. Paul endorsed Mr. Marchant in the 2010 cycle, but has not endorsed anyone in that race in 2012," he wrote. "We are focused on Dr. Paul's national campaign and are unlikely to get involved in that primary." (We left a message with Marchant's campaign, which didn't respond as of this posting.)

"I think it's awful arrogant of career politicians to expect endorsements when they haven't earned them," Stinchfield says. "Case in point: Dr. Paul. I think (Marchant) just expected his endorsement.

But if Stinchfield thought this was going to be a home-run hit in an anti-incumbent moment, he may have swung a little wide. One of the "false endorsements" he says Marchant claimed is Dianne Edmondson, Denton County GOP chair. Edmondson tells Unfair Park she can't endorse anybody in a contested election, but she does endorse Marchant as the executive director of the National Republican Coalition for Life.

"I explained this to Grant," she said. "I don't know what his problem is. I guess he's looking for a story."

Stinchfield, for his part, says Edmondson never told him this when he approached her about her support as the chairperson.

Another ill-gotten endorsement Stinchfield points to is from Dallas County GOP chair Wade Emmert. Emmert, on the other hand, sees it differently.

"I was a Cedar Hill councilman at the time, and he has never listed me as anything but," Emmert says. "So I don't see what the problem is. I endorsed him as a city councilman and I did so because he was very responsive to Cedar Hill. I was happy to endorse him. It's entirely accurate.

"I have not gotten involved in this race between Marchant and Stinchfield. Now he's trying to suck in not only me, but Dianne Edmondson? It's unheard of. I guess I'm disappointed his campaign managers chose this path."

There are a few endorsements sent to us by the Stinchfield campaign, some of whom are candidates for national and state office who don't want their names associated with this flurry of electoral mudslinging.

Marchant is also endorsed by marshmallow peeps. They donate to him reguarly, which is how he remains so fluffy.

I am proud to be on Kenny Marchant's endorsement list and I don't see anyone among the hundreds of others on the list who feel differently.  Kenny is a man of exceptional integrity, intelligence and competence and our district could not ask for better representation.

It amazes me to see an intellectual pipsqueak who doesn't even live in the district come carpetbagging in and try to convince folks in the district that he can do a better job than our outstanding neighbor who has done a great job of representing us in both the Legislature and Congress.

Yep, I'll take a great, hardworking neighbor over a pipsqueak carpetbagger anytime!

Grant does not live in the district.  Not even close.   I lived about 3 blocks from him until I moved last April and when we went to dinner at a friends house about 3 weeks ago he still lives at the same house.  He is selling his house yes but if he wasn't living there the day we drove by then he needs to call the police because another family is living in his house.

This looks like a lot of posts from fake political hacks from both sides. Is anyone in here real? And bringing his wife into it? Really?

SO MUCH FOR CIVILITY ----- WHAT on earth are you talking about.  Grant called him out for fake endorsements but the people he called out said they they are in fact still supporting him but since they are now the chairs of the Denton and Dallas County Party they can't endorse but that they still support Kenny.   You must work for Grant because you guys can't make this kind of desperate campaining up.    and I went to Marchants website - there never was an endorsement by Ron Paul only a quote of what a great man Kenny Marchant is.   Grant should move back to New York or wait maybe Grant should move to the district that he is at least running in  - if he wants to represent people then shouldn't he at least live in the same area???????? just saying so much for civility aka Grant Stinchfield

Hahaha! This can't get any better... So it seems that Mr. Stinchfield called out Congressman Marchant on fake endorsements. Was he right? I'd say so. Here's the problem with Marchant's case, he hasn't listed his endorsements on his campaign website to show any kind of clarity as to what the endorsement is/was for. All it says is who endorsed him. It doesn't say anything else. To be fair, Mr. Stinchfield's website says the same thing, however, since he's never run for office before, it's clear that his endorsements are for his current bid for the CD-24 seat. Self explanatory.

What the really funny part is, his endorsements mentioned in the article are years old, and some not even for his (Marchant's) campaign for Congress!!! So what the hell are Marchant's endorsements for things uninvolved to his run for Congress doing on his Congressional Campaign website's endorsements listing?!?! Once again, we seem to have a Congressman who is fully willing to take advantage of public trust to keep himself in the good likes of voters. Plain and simple.

I'm wondering, now, what else Congressman Marchant may be hiding...

George, did you even read this article?  It's basically saying Grant Stinchfield is as desperate as a desperate candidate can be.    I have tried to follow Grant for months but all he does is run against Kenny.  I still don't know what he is for but it's like he is trying to run this gotcha type of campaign because he has nothing to run on himself.   2 of the 3 people in this article are still with Kenny.  Grant grow up and run on yourself and not against a good man and a good Congressman.  We need more people like Kenny in Congress

Really George?  Someone has fed you a load of lies and it's sad that you took that bait hook line and sinker.

Marchant vs. Stinchfield: Who Is The Tallest Pygmy In The Forest? Not quite the ring of the Thrilla in Manilla, is it?

I can certainly understand the frustration with incumbents, but I'm not sure all such sheep are of the same flock.  Case and point is Marchant.  I am not someone that gets involved in every political event, but I do make a point of contacting my elected officials every so often.  I feel like it's our duty as citizens.  Every time I have called Marchant's office, I get a response.  One time I called and HE even answered the phone!  Said it helped him keep in direct contact with people outside DC.  While there are certainly losers in both parties in Washington, from my experience Marchant is one of the few good ones.  Just my two cents.

Redistricting moved us from Sessions to Marchant. Didn't realize it could get any worse, but it may have.

Marchant needs to go. He has to rely on outdated endorsements because he has zero accomplishments as a Congressman. He has passed ZERO bills and is absent from the district. Couple that with doubling his net worth while in Congress and you get a career-politician who needs to be fired.

Easy to say when you draw your own district. Or is that not what Marchant did for himself when he was elected?

Grant is still trying to sell his Oak Cliff house, but currently lives in Irving.

Kenny is one of the most honorable, honest christian man I know. This guy running against him sounds like he is running a campain of despperation and dishonesty. Shameful

Marchant's newsletters are really poor...terrible in fact.  Tell us how you are going to make the country better, instead of "I shook hands with this Boy Scout or this school group".. Come on Kenny, get to be a real pol and earn your pay.  I'm voting for Grant.

Passing no bill is usually a good thing. If the bill sucks, don't pass it.

I guess you don't know what Kenny has been up to while in office. And don't sit there and play the faith card like Kenny is better somehow than his opponent because he happens to be a Christian. Now that's desperate! The only desperation I've seen (aside from yours) has come in the form of nice shiny campaign mailers from Congressman Marchant telling me what a great conservative he is, and how he's a fighter for taxpayers. Riddle me this, why is it that Mr. Marchant feels the need to use the tax payer's money to tell them he's a fighter for the tax payer? Shameful.

George Myers

There is a difference between not voting for bad bills and not having any of your legislation passed. Marchant has done both. He voted to raise the debt ceiling AND has managed to not have any of his legislation passed.
