Joe Avezzano, the Cowboys' Beloved Former Special Teams Coach, is Dead at 68

There aren't many special teams coaches whose names or faces we recognize. But Joe Avezzano, who choreographed the Cowboys' kicking and return games from 1990 to 2002, was a memorable face and name. And now he's gone: Dead at 68, several outlets are reporting, after suffering a heart attack on a treadmill in Italy.

Avezzano, of course, was let go by the Cowboys when Bill Parcells took over the team's football operations. He had done some work in the media in recent years, along with running Coach Joe's Hat Tricks, a music venue in Lewisville. But he was in Italy doing what he'd done since the late-1960s: coaching.

I guess God is finally addressing all three phases of the game.

He had the balls to come on my radio show and co host with me one weekend.  He was one of the coolest jocks I have ever had the chance to meet.  He had an amazing sense of humor.  I am sorry to hear of his passing but happy I had the chance to meet him.

Oh Crap.

I knew Joe through business and his Hat Trick bar - one helluva nice guy. This is sad news. May He Rest in Peace.

Coach Joe was friendly and sincere, two qualities lacking in most pro football coaches.

Condolences to the Avezzano family and his many friends. A really good guy and a huge key to the rebirth of the Cowboys. He will be missed.

No more Coach Joe on KHYI?  A sad day indeed.

Perhaps Tom Landry needed some help.

The Coach Joe show was awesome. The man could spin a yarn. It was the only Cowboy related programming I could listen to.

Backs away from mic: Stay Hard Joe!
