In New Video about Museum Tower, the Dallas Police and Fire Pension Promises: We Got This

Categories: Arts, Development

Before we decamp for Le Bar: If you haven't been following the spat between the Nasher Sculpture Center and the owner of the Museum Tower project -- which happens to be the Dallas Police and Fire Pension System -- Schutze had a thoughtful, balanced take on the matter last week. The gist, basically, is this:

The opulent tower of million-dollar condos is reflecting quite the ray of sunshine on the Nasher and other spaces in the Arts District, and no one's quite sure what to do about it. A mediator has been hired to broker an agreement. That mediator, lawyer Tom Luce, has asked both sides to go quiet.

But first, the chairman of the pension board wants its members to know: Hey! It's OK! We totally didn't invest your future in a speculative real-estate deal based entirely on its position in the Arts District, only to accidentally turn the project into the sworn enemy of everyone who's ever accidentally glanced at a Rothko and thought, "Hmm, it doesn't suck, I guess."

The video, uploaded today, is above. Enjoy, and have a great weekend. Schutze is back next week, either with a kayaking travelogue or a measured response to this. I'm rooting for the travelogue thing.

Gosh, that poor Nasher Sculpture Center! Someone went and built a new tall glass building downtown. Who could have ever foreseen that?

Loved Schutze's response on the DMag link.  Can't wait to see his "official" response.

What they really need to be focused on is the apparent gross breach of fiduciary duty comitted by the trustees when they approved this highly unorthodox (for a pension fund similarly situated) transaction.

I'm surprised the pensioners haven't started screaming for the heads of those trustees who approved this deal. I would love to see a copy of the internal memorandum that recommended approval.

Sughrue couldn't get financing anywhere in the country on Museum Tower and the City of Dallas wanted that building bad. So bad that Dallas Police and Fire Pension System was forced into financing it by Tom Leppert and the Council Members on that board. How? They were told they would hurt their  pension if they didn't.  The officers who represented the board has since been replaced. Nice of John Sughrue PR sleaze to toss his financier under the bus by claiming they own it. They only own the note. Geez, own up Sughrue!

"Also, if you speak to the media, we will burn you with our 300-sun Museum Tower laser."

According to Tim Rogers, the Smithers to Wick Allison's Mr Burns, there is no spat and Jim Schutze is making it up because he longs to share a golden spouted bidet with Wick at the country club, any truth to this rumor?

That anyone in their right mind every thought D Magazine or Belo did real investigative journalism when it comes to Dallas real estate, is hilarious. Wilonsky was great at giving his opinion but unfortunately never did do investigative work on issues related to real estate or politics, either. Glad people are finally figuring that out.

I agree with you. It does not just look annoying, it is a totally uncalled for act.

And please edit the awkward 40 seconds of dead air at the end followed by repeated video. I was expecting deleted scenes or outtakes.

I was wondering the MR Committee Chairman up there had the sense to have his entire idea of making this video with every comment image even the meeting notes behind it  ATTORNEY EXAMINED and  Approved before doing it.My humble guess is no ."That mediator, lawyer Tom Luce, has asked both sides to go quiet."  Even without that warning/ advice What part of once you turn it over to the Attorney, they speak for you does this guy not get ?Well we have another guy for  the other sides Legal team to put on the holiday card list .
