One Million Moms Is Now Calling For A Boycott Against "Blasphemous" GCB

ABC
Oddly, many One Million Moms members looks just like this.
Back in February, it was semi-big news when a group called One Million Moms called for a boycott of Dallas-based J.C. Penney. The reason was the company's new spokeswoman, Ellen DeGeneres, who you will be shocked to learn is gay, and thus obviously unfit to sell pleated Dockers and window treatments to the American public. But a few days ago, OMM director Monica Cole told a Christian news website the Moms are done boycotting J.C. Penney. Not because the boycott failed to convince J.C. Penney to drop DeGeneres, but because they're moving on to other, more important issues. Like calling for a boycott of GCB, the new ABC show about drunken, back-stabbing, big-hair-having Park Cities ladies that Schutze loves for its historical veracity.

On their website, One Million Moms put out an action alert about the show, which reads in part:

OMM is disgusted with the new program "Good Christian Belles" which is blasphemy at its worst! It is based on the book "Good Christian B*tches" and mocks Christianity repeatedly. This anti-Christian program blasphemes God, Jesus Christ, God's Church, and the Bible. As Christians, we will not stand for this Christian-bashing program. No other religion has to contend with this ridicule so why should we? The network's irresponsible behavior must be accounted for. They are deliberately attempting to sabotage our faith. Their actions are damaging and destructive to our religion. As Christians we must demand respect. Together we will defend our Christian values and beliefs.

And they're already claiming a victory: Kraft pulled their ad for Philadelphia Cream Cheese a few days ago, which OMM claims the company decided to do "after consumer complaints started to pile up."

"Way to go moms! You are making a HUGE difference! Kraft heard you loud and clear," reads an update on the OMM website.

Or maybe not. The Hollywood Reporter got a statement from Kraft that said, actually, they just decided to "redirect advertising to other programs with an established audience." The statement adds, ""Although we received a few consumer complaints, this decision was not linked in any way to the content of this particular show."

Still available online. Sorry, Moms.
One Million Moms is a project from the American Family Association, which the Southern Poverty Law Center designates as an "anti-gay" hate group, mainly owing to the fact that it's rabidly anti-gay. (There's also a One Million Dads site, which, disappointingly, is much less active. They do occasionally protest more manly things, like NASCAR and Family Guy.) One News Now, the Christian news website they talked to about dropping the J.C. Penney boycott, is also owned and operated by the AFA.

If boycotting GCB doesn't stir you the way active homophobia does, OMM's also currently calling for a boycott against Toys 'R' Us for selling the "gay wedding" issue of Archie. Luckily for the Moms, no more impressionable children will be able to get their hands on the issue. Unluckily, it's because it's completely sold out.

Oh, it will get cancelled too.  Maybe, just maybe, someday, someone at the networks will realize that most people are fed up and disgusted by shows that feature unfaithful gay spouses, disrespectful children, words like the four letter ones uttered in a prior post, discussions about oral sex, smoking pot, new and innovative ways to murder and mutilate people, especially women, crooked public servants, and on and on.  The glee with which commenters heap ridicule upon good and decent people is evidence that something has gone terribly wrong with our society.  The good people you are deriding are your parents and your grandparents who worked hard so that this could be a great country, and you spoiled brats are showing your ignorance and disrespect toward the very things that gave you the freedom to be the nasty little creeps you are.  What's wrong with you people?

OMG really did it really take !million to take down this show , GCB is a comedy show not a Sunday special where they are preaching Gods word. If these Million moms werent on there fat asses watching tv shows they didnt like and start having sex with there husbands on Sunday night then maybe this world would be a better place. I bet they didnt know ABC was going to replace this show with a demonic one (666 Park Ave) HAHAHAHA now that is reaping what you sow !

I think it's laughable that OMM is so opposed to GCB.  Kind of reminds me of the line in Hamlet, "The lady doth protest too much, methinks."

Hey OMM here's an idea, DON'T WATCH THE SHOW!  You're ignorant selves are ruining it for the rest of America that enjoys some comedy about stereotypes.  What makes you all so superior that media can't poke a little harmless fun at your religion, but it's ok if all other beliefs are made fun of?  If you weren't so insecure about yourself and your faith maybe you wouldn't feel so wronged by this show.  Or maybe you all are these ridiculous women and you feel embarrassed.  Learn to laugh at yourself or you will lead the rest of your life quite miserably.

This is the most idiotic post I've read today - and it had some real competition.  To answer your points in order, I am positive that the membership of OMM didn't watch the now-cancelled GCB, since the article seems to posit that the protests/boycott were not the reason advertisers pulled out of the show, they have hardly ruined it for the rest of America "that enjoys some comedy about stereotypes."  The quoted phrase in itself shows how little thought was used in writing it.  Groups across the country fervently denounce "comedy about stereotypes" unless, of course, it is leveled against a group they don't like - then it's ok.  "All other beliefs are made fun of"?  Really?  Where are the programs poking "a little harmless fun" at Muslims or Hindus?  South Park tried to include something about Mohammad in one, ONE episode and the writers had to go into hiding.  Do you really think that anyone who feels wronged by something is insecure?  They could be brave human beings standing up against intolerance and ignorance.  Just because this is your view of them doesn't make it so.  You have been wrong throughout your post and the roll didn't stop at your assessment of their feelings of security.  I have been a Christian most of my life and have spent a lot of that time in churches.  There are some hypocrites just as there are in any religion or any other organized group, for that matter.  However, the majority are truly trying to live their faith.  You might try respecting those with whom you disagree.  GCB was cancelled because of low ratings.  If the program had pulled in huge numbers, no group boycott would have dissuaded advertisers.  Money follows money in business.  I wish you the best.  I'm sure you will find some other entertainment to fill this hour on Sunday night.  I am personally glad the program was cancelled but I am more excited that so few people were attracted to this type of bashing/humor that the show never found legs to begin with.

"Their actions are damaging and destructive to our religion. As Christians we must demand respect."  No OMM, you are damaging and destructive to your religion.  And you can't demand respect, you need to learn to show it to others, then you might earn some in return.

For all true Christians, remember that Jesus said:“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you.” John 15:18-20 NIV

Well, if Christians didn't spend so much of their time trying to take over the world perhaps there would be no need for a program like GCB.  The program itself is not my cup of tea but all is fair.....

Okay for the two moms, oh, I'm sorry, the one million mom's, shut up already.  i mean really, why don't you people boycott something that needs boycotting.  Like the fast and furious project or Eric Holder not testifying before congress about it.  Now there is something to boycott.  And to the person that said they needed to use a realist setting.  TRUST ME.  GCB is being filmed in a very realistic place in Dallas, Texas.  Been there many, many times.  PS  they won't let the million moms in,  And this show is NOT bashing Christians.  Once again the million dipsticks are wrong, they are poking fun at how some "Christians" act. And everyone knows the type people I am talking about.  Can I get an AMEN!

J. C. Penney is caught in the crosshairs of the liberal  anti-Limbaugh crowd for being a fmr. Limbaugh advertiser and ironically now is being taken to task for being the Dallas regional "Desperate Housewives" show sponsor, -- lampooning the local  conservative Mega-church crowd. ( Actually, the publicity may fill the pews on Easter because the show is hilariously close to real life congregational "bee-itchy "  infighting).  I like the Penney's window treatments and Dockers.  As for Ellen--You go girl!

In their rant, as posted in the article, they are but one line away from calling for a fatwa to have the producers, writers, directors and actors put to death.  Seriously, change the christian references to muslim ones and these women are terrorists.

Fundamental religions, of any stripe, seem to be fundamentally wrong.

UnderGodNotGovt

Are you serious?  Contacting advertisers to try and convince them to pull ads from this program is, in your mind, the equivalent of a fatwa to have producers, writers, directors and actors put to death?  Where on earth do you see that?  You are the one who is fundamentally wrong.

If they just waited a few weeks, this show will go away.  It is HORRRIIIIBBBLLLEEE!  I gave it six weeks after the first episode; I don't think it will last that long after seeing the follow-up.

Such a true statement.  I have the utmost respect for those who actually live by the principles.  But I have seen many people who claim to be "christians" because they show up at church on Sundays.  But during the rest of the week, they lie, cheat on their spouses, stab others in the back, avoid helping others given the opportunity - commit many sins.  But somehow they seem to rationalize and justify it their minds as long as they benefit in some way.  To many of these good "christians", church is just a glorified social club.

UnderGodNotGovt
UnderGodNotGovt

Do you judge your own actions as carefully as you do the actions of others?  You seem to be fully willing to cast lots of stones.  I would bet that you don't know most of these people and your judgements are largely based on speculation.  However, since you obviously have your life in perfect order, perhaps you could be a positive influence on those you say are committing many sins.

@UnderGodNotGovt All that South Detroit was saying is that no one on this earth is perfect.EVERY human being sins and since rhino's and giraffes dont watch tv then humans dont have the right to say how better or worst of a christian someone is.

Maybe next premiere season we'll get to see a show based on, say, the evangelical occupy movement. We can follow some pure heroine as she maneuvers the gritty tent-alleyways, avoiding the rapes, diseases, rats and FOX news to reach an agreeance with.

Up twinkles, anyone?

Paul is right.  The show is satire.  It doesn't make fun of Christians.  It makes fun of people who make a big production of going to Church and loudly proclaim themselves to be Christians, while leading lives and treating people in a decidedly unChristian way.  If you are offended by GCB, you should ask yourself why.

Big Show

The funny thing about all of this is that it probably not all that far fetched. I know a lot of people the get there fresh coat of paint on Sunday and act like some of these folks on the show and even some who are commenting. By Saturday the paint has chipped away from all the sinning that its time to go back again for that fresh coat. Yes there is mostly garbage on tv, but maybe rather then protesting tv shows or the fact that a person has a alternative life style and promotes your favorite shopping spot, be proactive. Go find something you like rather than disslike and promote that.

As was pointed out by Ellen Degneres, "One Million" is really a few dozen.  As with many of these groups, they self proclaim to speak for many others when they actually speak for pretty much themselves.  In other words, one million my a__.

They don't seem to understand the concept of: if you don't like a show, NO ONE is forcing you to watch it.  By watching it so they could write down on a note pad what they don't like about it, they are just adding to its viewership.  These "moms" need to get a life.

Yes. Now tell that to the morons who made that stupid GCB show. The world just wants to bash Christianity any way it see fit. If the title would have been  Good Muslim B**** I'm certain we would have seen riots and buildings being blown up by now.

In America we have the right to bash religion. Islam is backwards and tribal. See? Christianity is based on a fairytale. Did it again. Judaism is little more than codified folk wisdom. Forgive me me if I decline to bash Hinduism, though, since, as any stoner knows, the elephants look cool.

"Little Mosque on the Prairie" has been airing in Canada (and parts of the US) for six years now and yet Toronto is not in flames nor Winnipeg laid waste.Having seen the first two episodes of "GCB", it's strongly anti-hypocrite, not anti-Christian, and I can see why so many avid hypocrites are so deeply offended at being called on their hypocrisy.

But it isn't called Good Christian Bitches.

A few years ago, I read an article that complained about how shows (I believe Gilmore Girls was an example given) that take place in quirky small towns are notorious for conspicuously leaving out the local church(es) which, in most small (and large) towns are often a big factor in people's lives.

Now there's a show with pretty stock television characters who also happen to be identified as Christian, and that's no good, either.

Paul

 Miss Natalie:

Please work on your reading comprehension.

If this show was bashing Christianity, I would be the first in line to hold the door open for all the people who had a beef with the producers and the network.

After all, in the ending of the pilot, doesn't the woman who has to take a job at the "hooters" knockoff and is herself somewhat conflicted but sees it as a valid way to support herself and her children, let the good christian babes have it with both barrels as to their decidedly un-Christian behavior as she is now an unfit mother and cannot be in their "Christian" circle because of the job that she has taken?

Personally, I don't think that show is all that great.  It plays off of hackneyed stereotypes, unrealistic settings and really really bad voice coaching and not to mention some really really poor script writing.  I really think that Annie Potts is terribly miscast in this role.  I think that she must really be on hard times to have agreed to do this show.

Christianity SHOULD be bashed when it slips it's tentacles into politics, schools, and starts telling me what I can and can't watch on TV.  Pray to whatever god you want in your homes and places of worship. That's it.
