Southern Dallas Kwik Stop Protesters Change Gears, Shift Goals To Establish Black Banks

Categories: Development

MuhammedatProtest31.jpg
The protests outside Tommy Pak's Diamond Shamrock Kwik Stop in South Dallas have dwindled, but the battle pitting black activists against the Korean store owner continues online at the Don't Stop Don't Shop Facebook page. There are still promises to continue the fight to shut down Pak's store, there are still photographs of the protests and, yes, there are still snippets of hate speech throughout. But Don't Stop Don't Shop is now listed as a bona fide community organization, complete with a new mission statement:

We are asking trusted members of our community to help organize this effort towards establishing a Black Bank or Credit Union. More details of this plan will be available in the near future, but we must start NOW!

The mission statement has nothing to do with Pak or Koreans. It instead embraces a longtime Nation of Islam tenet, "Do For Self," which Nation of Islam Dallas student minister Jeffery Muhammad touched on last Friday on KHVN's Robert Ashley Show. He called next phase of the protests the "Black Development Fund" and said it would be "brought forth to help spur economic development."

"We are about self-sufficiency and we are not about going to the table of any rich white man or any rich Korean man and sitting there like Lazarus begging for crumbs to fall from their table," Muhammad announced on the show. "Part of what needs to happen is education."

The idea of black banks and credit unions sounded oddly like the deal struck last week between black and Korean leaders when the two sides agreed to terms to stop the protests prompted over claims that Pak made racial slurs. The two coalitions agreed that they'd partner together to educate blacks to help them gain skills to open their own businesses. There are few black-owned businesses in the neighborhood, though African-Americans make up much of its population.

Muhammad declined to comment, so Unfair Park called around to some of the community leaders involved in the truce, but few even knew about the new Black Development Fund, although Donald Wright of Justice Seekers Texas said that black banks had been a goal for some time. "We talked about that since before the protests started," Wright said.

Chong Choe, the executive director of Kollaboration Dallas, also chimed in, saying that one of the Korean leaders, Ted Kim, was a banker, and that part of the agreement was for Kim to teach blacks how to manage their credit and garner loans to open businesses.

The Don't Stop Don't Shop mission, on the surface at least, mirrors the truce between Koreans and blacks but for one major difference: no Koreans. The way it is now, two separate coalitions will work simultaneously yet separately to attain enlightenment and resources for blacks to own their businesses. They'll be competing.

Did I miss something? A man comes to rob a store by grabbing the cash register and is shot. Like many people, that man had dark skin. This somehow prompts Jeffery Muhammad to go inside Pak's store and they begin trading racial and bigoted slurs. Pak is labeled a 'Racist' even though he never prompted his race above another.... oh wait, Oh forgot that bigotry is now called racism... So, Pak is a racist and Muhammad is not. O.K. Fine. Next we see signs and protests against Pak and his store. Many of these signs seem to imply Pak's race has something to do with it. How? Are all Koreans bigoted or racist? Or, is this judging an entire race based on the actions of a few men and the color of their skin.Next, we see some sort of public apology and an agreement to end protests. The thing is, they don't end. Here we are months later and this has turned in to some sort of 'we need black banks' story. Whoa! How did we get here?

WHERE YOU BEEN  get a glimpse of the freedman town, blacks could not go to hotels, schools or retail establishments. Go to pictures of all the black businesses before it wa gentrified by city place development at thomas and hall street

Yeah, State Thomas before gentrification.  A great fried chicken place on the corner, Hendersons if I recall, and lots of interesting looking business entrepreneurs in the doorways and hallway nearby selling drugs and their bodies.  It was so proud.  I can't understand why it was torn down and urban renewed.

I would like to see a mini-series made depicting the modern-day state of black inner-city urban neighborhoods had no Koreans ever opened a single business in one.  Something akin to "The Walking Dead" maybe?

Diane Birdwell1. Creating a "black-owned bank" presupposes that there would be some favorable reason that RACE ALONE would be a guiding factor in the busines' operation, yes? You say you are a teacher of our children? ownership does not presuppose anythingNot sensitivity to cultural problems, per se, but in the actual business plan? ---That could be considered racist and could violate several laws. What Laws? elaborate  IGNORANCE BEGETS IGNORANCE (Imagine an overtly "white-owned bank for the white community.") IMAGINE ? Where you been? NOW ASK FOR DIRECTIONS!Does that mean if a qualified Hispanic or white person applied to work in that bank, they would be rejected, based solely on race?Ownership has nothing to do with the employees. Where have you been, blacks had to picket and protest to get the Korean merchants to employee at least one black. Prior to this they had a monopoly on the beauty supply industry, came into our community could not talk English  and expected us to understand them or YAH GEA OW MY STO ! and have the nerve to push you or shoot you.  You say you teach our children and did not know that the ruling class teaches us to hate our skin color, to hate our hair and thick lips. Then the Koreans for economic gain capitalized on our self hatred and our need to assimlate to look like white people. NOW TEACH THAT!2. Banks only succeed  have plans for business creations, show ability to obtain a loan and repay it--in other words, they have "finanacial literacy." I am in total favor of that. Seems like THAT should be your first step, yes?Seems like you as a teacher you should know that you are responsible for the first step to teach and eradicate financial illteracy. How many of your students can even read and count. NOW BLAME THAT ON THE NOI3. Your own words are exclusionary and incindiary. Your message is not one of peace, as the Prophet Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him) would want you to do.Correct, his message is not one of peace. NOI is a message to know that the black man should stand up and have pride in their heritage without having to remain in a subservient position.  We all know--those of us over 50 do---how the founder of your sect was racist and referred to people like me as "blue-eyed devils." You talk about a founder of a sect who was a racist. What do you call four hundred years of enslavement.? Being called a blue-eyed devil is mild compared to what you and your people should be called. Blue eyed devil is to make sure the fantasy that you teach our kids that the devil is red all over. NOI wants us toknow who the real enemy is. People who divide and conquer. TEACH YOUR BLACK STUDENTS TRUE HISTORY  Hatred in your heart is. Racism in your heart is.what bible do you read, Mine says do not Judge. and my mama said the pot can't talk about the kettle.that why integration was a mistake to turn our kids over to the slave masters kids and further damage them. This is what we get for wanting to be white! 4.  I also believe the Koran forbids the charging of interest on loans (riba). So, I guess higher fees would be the business m.o.--pricing out your own bank from competition? Muhammed said that business is warfare Of course, truly Islamic banks DO exist in the USA, but none limit themselves to the Black community. A problem for you, sir. Is this what you teach our children 5.  Instead of attacking ad nauseum a man who was willing to live the American Dream of owning his own business--and placing it in your area, why not work WITH him? You feel empowered how to tell us how to run our business. Can you help the Koreans with customer service. No one in business succeeds without good service. " Not one of you believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself."You need to listen to Muhammed's eloquent rendition of this quote  before the Korean Federation before you speak

From reading this, I see that you are bigoted towards Koreans. You seem to think there is some vast Korean conspiracy to use black self hatred and supposed need to look white to gain an economic advantage over the black community. Is this code for selling beauty products? That's great. I learned something today. I did not know you needed to be Korean to open a beauty supply store. You mention the Bible and the Quran but do we have to bring the sons of Abraham in to the argument? Has that ever helped anybody? Really? Let's leave the book thumping out of this and get back to the race baiting you seem to love.My concern here is that you seem to share the opinions of many people of Dallas. So, my idea is that you, being in touch with the feelings of a certain Dallas population, could help us all out by identifying yourselves to the rational public. Perhaps a big red B for biggot or R for racist on your arm. Maybe a big B.R. sign for your house would work. Or we can cut to the chase, bump that last letter up a notch, and use B.S. since that is what your point of view really is.

TheRealDirtyP1  I filed a complaint against Attorney Barrett with the State Bar. Gregg Howard from this paper asked why> "He was just standing there smiling." I knew then that we as blacks have made a mistake with integration. Barrett standing there gloating with  the fact that he had just brokered a treaty with a hand full of broke ass niggahs, uncle tom negroes His intent was to provoke Student Min. Jeffery and the protesters. What Greg saw as a smile was a SMIRK . SORRY  guys attorneys are held to a higher standard by law

Mr Muhammed--

As someone who has taught in that neighborhood (Roosevelt HS), someone who has been raised in Dallas, owns a house in Dallas and encourages all areas of Dallas to be successful, let me make a few observations:

1. Creating a "black-owned bank" presupposes that there would be some favorable reason that RACE ALONE would be a guiding factor in the business operation, yes? Not sensitivity to cultural problems, per se, but in the actual business plan? ---That could be considered racist and could violate several laws. (Imagine an overtly "white-owned bank for the white community.") Does that mean if a qualified Hispanic or white person applied to work in that bank, they would be rejected, based solely on race?

2. Banks only succeed if their customers not only have some amount of money to deposit, but have plans for business creations, show ability to obtain a loan and repay it--in other words, they have "financial literacy." I am in total favor of that. Seems like THAT should be your first step, yes?

3. Your own words are exclusionary and incindiary. Your message is not one of peace, as the Prophet Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him) would want you to do. This is not th efirst time your organization has tried to bring discord and unrest in that neighborhood. In fact, it reminds me of a child wanting attention from its mother, so it falls on the ground, screaming and kicking. We all know--those of us over 50 do---how the founder of your sect was racist and referred to people like me as "blue-eyed devils." For the record, my eyes are hazel, and I am not your enemy. Hatred in your heart is. Racism in your heart is.

4.  I also believe the Koran forbids the charging of interest on loans (riba). So, I guess higher fees would be the business m.o.--pricing out your own bank from competition? Of course, truly Islamic banks DO exist in the USA, but none limit themselves to the Black community. A problem for you, sir.

5.  Instead of attacking ad nauseum a man who was willing to live the American Dream of owning his own business--and placing it in your area, why not work WITH him? Why not show us the love and peace Allah commands of all if us? Did not the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) once say,

"Mankind are the family of God, and the most beloved of them to God are those who are the most excellent to His family. Not one of you believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself."

Maybe I am wrong... But I could have sworn that my Muslim friends include ALL of God's Children in their thoughts and prayers.

Muhammad should go and ask some folks in the Park Cities, how they go about, getting there taxpayer funded projects off the ground. They(Parkies) have been sucking on the public teat for some time, now...and it seems to be working for them!

Let me see if I understand this correctly.

Little Benny Bernanke has already announced he will be holding interest rates near zero until late in 2014 in order to help the economy improve, so that the big banks who borrow from the Fed can do so more easily in order to lend money to their corporate customers who, instead of borrowing, are sitting on more mountains of hoarded cash than human history has ever seen in order to wait out the Obama economy without going bankrupt. Not to worry, there's so much more that you can do with free government money just for you. Credit card spreads. Trades.

Meanwhile, so little community banks, like the Bank of Muhammad, can now pay their depositors zero in order to get money to lend more cheaply than they otherwise could get from the Fed at zero, which they can then lend out to depositors whose accounts are already net losses to them at some interest rate that magically matches both what he can afford to pay as an interest rate and as a high risk jobless borrower.

Muhammad, dude, if this plan of yours isn't just an updated version of Mickey Rooney's old "Hey, my folks have a barn - let's put on a play!", that picketing gig might prove to be the more profitable one in the long run.

I mean, who knows what kinds of spare change you might find in the parking lot?

who the hell would want to open a business where the gang in front of the store calls you 'white boy' and protests your business and the steals from your store with impunity

Can you imaging what would happen if there were a call for white or Asian banks and credit unions?!? Seriously, if you're really wanting to help your community, shut down the crime generating factors (like the aforementioned drug market), the predatory businesses (like the payday loan and check cashing operations), disregard and disavow "community leaders" like Mohammed and then accept help from anyone willing to give it... The list will be short to begin with, but success breeds success...

40ozs&abagofjellybeans

The white business folks in Dallas already have a community bank, though. It's called 'The Dallas Taxpayers Credit Union'....Parkies and their developer friends can withdraw as much as they like....and pay back, what and if, they feel the need to.

I may be unaware how businesses work, but black or white, banks can't lend if there aren't people depositing money.  How will this "black bank" attract the depositors to make lending feasible?  Especially when, as Jim Schutze has noted, blacks who accumulate the means get the hell out of town?

Chris Danger

While developing an economic generator such as a community bank is an admirable feat, I have some reservations about letting these knuckleheads run the whole shooting match. When they engaged in an action, that was total outright racism, in their protest of Mr. Pak,  that sets a bad precedent and taints its credibility from the start.

Let me get this straight. Community leaders in the unemployment battered, poverty stricken southern sector believe the first order of business is creating black owned banks and credit unions?  Black Development Fund, or Cart Before The Horse Fund?

Banks or credit unions!?! Why not have the check cashing places and injury lawyers teach a class on how to make money in southern Dallas County? They seem to be the experts at it.

"We are about self-sufficiency and we are not about going to the table of any rich white man or any rich Korean man and sitting there like Lazarus begging for crumbs to fall from their table,"

Sounds good.  Start developing a business plan then wait for a knock on the door from certain community figures asking for equity in your project if you expect the permits, egress and zoning to be approved.

There's plenty of black folks in Dallas with money, plenty of black bankers, doctors, lawyers, investment managers. There's also a reason they aren't hurrying to open businesses in the southern sector. They know better.

Why isn't Muhammad protesting and trying to get rid of the drug market down the street?  Seems the drug market would be more destructive to the community and for any potential new business in the area.  A protest with signs saying "Don't SHOP" at the drug market would be more meaningful.  But I guess that would not further the racist goals of Muhanned and his cronies.

serious question- are there banks in the community at all? North Oak Cliff is far more prosperous and we still have a dearth of banks, so I can't imagine how it is in that part of town.

Has Muhammad commented at all about calling Park's attorney "white boy?"

I'm pretty sure Muhammad is more racist than Park.  It's not the PC thing to say, but to have this guy drive off customers, it's un-American.  We're a capitalist society, pepole can make up their own minds. When you're protesting on the sidewalk in front of the store, that to me seems like harrassment and intimidation.
