Black, Korean Leaders Agree to End Kwik Stop Protests. But Nation of Islam Isn't Through.

As promised, Korean and black leaders met today in Oak Cliff to announce the end of the Diamond Shamrock Kwik Stop protests on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Rev. Ronald Wright addressed the media first, standing next to Korean Society of Dallas vice president Ted Kim. The two were flanked by blacks and Koreans representing various organizations and churches. And behind them was Tommy Pak, the owner of the Fair Park-area gas station and convenience store that's been the subject of scorn from some in the black community for several months.

"We have come here for forgiveness and atonement, which will create movement between the African-American community and the Korean community," Wright said by way of an opening. "Mr. Pak had agreed to make a public apology, and as people of God -- as Christians -- we must forgive him."

SigninShamrockWindow.jpg
The sign hanging in Pak's Kwik Stop window
Pak's Kwik Stop was first protested after a December 9 altercation with Nation of Islam Student Minister Jeffery Muhammad, who did not attend the press conference. The two were said to have traded racial slurs, though Muhammad maintains his innocence. Muhammad and NAACP Dallas President Dr. Juanita Wallace have pledged to continue the protests -- and Muhammad and his supporters were out in force moments after the press conference, matter of fact.

At the press conference Pak looked extremely uncomfortable and spoke only briefly. He was sweating so much that at one point, his glasses fogged up; at another, a Korean leader procured a handkerchief and wiped Pak's forehead. Pak spoke haltingly, apologizing again for his behavior, thanking his supporters and reaffirming his faith in God. "I've been blessed," he said.

"On behalf of all Americans who are of Korean descent, on this day I want to express sincere regret for the unfortunate events that took place," Kim said. "However, I believe it has provided us with a great opportunity to come together and create strong partnerships and bonds with the black community and its leadership."

MuhammedatProtest31.jpg

The two sides negotiated earlier this week, with the help of a mediator from the U.S. Department of Justice, and reached an agreement all involved have said they hope will bind the communities together. They drew up a proclamation, which every leader signed. Though they didn't release the terms to the public, Rev. Wright said Koreans and blacks have agreed to educate each other about their respective cultures and to trade business know-how. He didn't expound further, though his brother Donald Wright did offer Unfair Park further details.

"They're going to teach us how to be bankable," Wright said, which, he hopes, will allow more blacks to start and own their own businesses. "At the same time, they have something they want us to teach them, like politics." Koreans, he said, hold little if any power in the Dallas political sphere, despite a sizable population.

During the press conference, Rev. Wright also said to his Korean counterparts: "You say you believe in Jesus, and I believe in Jesus. There should be no difference."

After the press conference, Tommy Pak, Ted Kim, community leader Charles Park and other Koreans got into their cars and drove to Pak's store to fill their gas tanks, ceremoniously signaling the end of the protest.

But, this afternoon at least, it appears far from over. As a matter of fact, they arrived to the largest group of picketers in weeks. Muhammad and about a dozen members of the Nation of Islam, many of whom were wearing suits and ties, held up signs and drove off customers. Juanita Wallace was conspicuously absent. Several motorists honked their horns as they passed in support. According to Muhammad, there's no end in sight, and the Nation of Islam will keep protesting "until the people say justice has been done."

Richard Barrett-Cuetara.jpg
Richard Barrett-Cuetara, Pak's attorney, and the Nation of Islam -- and the motorist caught in the middle
"At what point should we say we should accept his apology when Minister Farrakhan has given us an eight-step atonement process," Muhammad said, deferring to Louis Farrakhan, the head of the Nation of Islam. "We are not even past the second part, because he's still lying about what happened in the store." Muhammad said of those black leaders present at the press conference, "Those who spoke don't speak for us."

Tensions rose when Pak's lawyer, Richard Barrett-Cuetara, pulled in to fill his tank of gas. Muhammad began to loudly berate him, referring to him as a "white boy" and a "lying lawyer."

With Pak inside the store, the Koreans didn't leave, nor the black protestors. Despite all the earlier efforts, despite attempts to quell the racial dispute and vitriol, it seems like we're right back where we started.

I am Korean, and after looking at the facts, I believe the Korean store owner is wrong.  It does not matter what the african american man said to the korean man.  What matters is that the korean man receives dollars from the african american community, and he has no business telling the african american man to go back to africa.  There is no room for stupid people in business.  The korean man's only agenda should be serving the customer.  To do this, he must know who is customer base is, and never, ever offend his customer(s).  In fact,  the korean man should have hired an african american person to run his store.  This could have solved the problem.  The korean man had no business being in his place of business, because it created a situation that reached a boiling point.  He took the bait, and hopefully, he learned from his mistake.

i do not believe that Korean owner said first you go back to Africa.  The black man said to Korean - you go back to Korea.   At least immigrant people recognize black people are native.  So Korean must be saying you go back to Africa in response to the black man's racial slur, go back to Korea.  The black man should hav inferior complex!!

“There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all… The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic… There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.”–Theodore Roosevelt, October 12, 1915

Wow.  Lots of internal divide within the South Dallas peeps.  That's gotta make it easy to keep under control and exploit.  Oldest play in the book(s).

NAACP told Wallace to stay out if using their name, Muhammad is now being called student minister, other groups agreed to settle issue. Black community that use the station were never involved in demonstration .Muhammad has said all along he wanted Koreans gone that is to crazy. What Black man who has been discriminated aganist, would tell anothe race to get out. I have been to that store and purchased gas, what I saw Pak deal with on my short stop, I would not tolerate for one day.

Why aren't these "community activists" protesting in front of the crack houses and forming citizen watch groups to patrol and make South Dallas a safer place to be?  Why aren't they picking up trash and demolishing the blighted buildings on lots that plague the area?  All those con artist pastors and deacons and BS Nation of Islam folks should put their money where their mouth is.  Maybe one less shiny suit and a little more monetary investment in their own community is in order.

Jeffery Muhammad is the real problem here. He's taking on the appearance of a thug, When it comes to NOI, or as a true Muslim friend called it, Bastard Islam, I have no respect, they seem to lack true knowledge of the Quran and Muhammad. Instead of trying to build the community and take down a far worse problem down the street w/ an open-air crack market or making sure children in the area have a healthy breakfast daily, he's joined up w/ some fellow thugs under the cause of "unity", which is really a code word for "tossing out anyone who isnt black". You know, these type of actions sound vaguely familiar to Jim Crow, blockbusting and the cross-burning antics of the KKK all rolled into one ugly mess.

My sincere hope for Mr.Pak is to stay and fight the good fight against racism, against thugs like Jeffery Muhammad and the so-called "community leaders" whom are trying to run him out of the neighborhood.

I am one of those who feel that I would waste the same amount in gas trying to save 10 cents per gallon by traveling. Yes, there are stores in high risk areas that have a minimun on a debit card purchase because the banks charge the merchants a processing fee for debit card. Regardless, Muhammed perhaps should have moved on or ask for a meeting with pac PAC should have said, my costs are your convienance and walked away and left brother Jeffery standing there. the immigrant merchants are quick to argue with customers, berate them, threaten to call the police, or physically push them, jerk the merchandise out of their hands. See the media and Muhammed focused on the one incident and the media played this as personal thing between pac and muhammed. that is why I AINT stopping and I AIn't shopping and I will be encouraging and educating other not to, it just won't be in front of that store that bribed the sellouts to stop protesting.

the koreans said they knew little about politics, do you think putting an Eddie Bernice Johnson sign in your window was politically correct, even most blacks don't reveal their political endorsements. All that information is going to is look up Eddie' s campaign finance report and see how much the Koreans gave her. Poor EBJ, she was once one of the most brilliant shrewd politicians I know, I have enjoyed studying her. I knew she was slipping when she announced her re-election bid at the failed Red Bird Mall and the best she had to stand with her was Atkins and Hill who have done nothing for their districts.  She should have just sent out an announcement card with a picture of her and Obama. Even Social Security left the shopping center.

By the way...check out the gas prices around town..then drive over to 1909 MLK..and check out their gas price... Today, March1, it was  $3.69....average price I have seen around Dallas is $3.49 - $3.51....drove to Arlington, and I saw $3.48...even at Chevon and Texaco, it was $3.53- $3.55...can anyone offer a reason why gas at this one particular station is on the average .20 to 15 cents higher?  and for the longest it was .30 cents higher....Also....go in various stores and ASK if there is a limit on how much you MUST spend on a debit card?  then ask yourself...would  YOU spend money at a store that IMPOSED a limit of what you MUST spend, and whose gas prices are .20 to 30 cents higher that the average around town..

Edit here thugs don't wear suits and bow ties, plain eyeglasses, and they don't question pricing, they just pay it or try to beat the merchant out of it PAC is a young man, no excuse,I don't care if the coalition, the nation of islam, sign the noble peace prize treat of the century, I ain't stopping my Oak Cliff Shift Change Protest until pac is made an example of. I sympathize with him calling muhammed a nigger out of anger, I'm mad at him running to the media, the robert ashley show, and the dallas observer and the DOJ trying to make himself the victim, this could have been over a long time ago, we can't stop sell outs because they have nothing to lose but we can stop those who exploit out community and buy out the sellouts with the blood money. I can't wait until the DOJ is open to see who got what. On second thought, sellouts can be held accountable, the DOJ says they want to help mediate racial tensions, if they want to stop internal racial tensions and classism between blacks, expose and prosecute the sellout and make them pay taxes on the blood money.

I have no doubt that tommy pak used the n word because he hears me, and my brothers and sisters use it. I support this generation from dismantling the negativity of the word and make it an endearing one.  we know the difference here it wasn't that brother muhammed was a broke niggah, he was the wrong niggah  to call a niggah and pak should have been able to discern the difference by muhammed age, thugs don't wear suits and bow ties, plain eyeglasses, and they don't question pricing, they just pay it. PAK is a young man, no excuse

sounds like a description of a lot leaders, but where do we get hurling these accusations. this was about setting standards. The SW Oak Cliff community has money, they are educated, live in nice homes, with minimum crime.  They shut down Red Bird Mall without one picket stick, they just stopped shopping there, nobody had to educate them to expect standards.

Unfortunately, the low income and transit dependent citizens in 75215 and 75216 can't drive by diamond shamrock to have lunch at pappadeuax and shop at the Galleria like SW Oak Cliff. So I applaud the Nation of Islam for at least trying to get those ignorant of their rights, who have accepted the conditions in South Dallas.  Who I target is the black leaders, who have power invested in them and do nothing.  I went to Leo chaney and he told me this was JUst the flava of South Dallas and you learn to live around it. I say close down the MLK car wash owned by a white man, close down little world owned by another set of ethnic immigrants, and shut down black owned baccus cleaners if he loses my clothes again. don't let the media stir this up to divide and conquer and picket their offices if they continue with these tactics

You wrongly suggests that all the protesters are members of the Nation of Islam..YOU ARE WRONG..and this is NOT..as Rev Wright alludes to..an issue of loving Jesus....and forgiving,...that is BS..THIS IS NOT..a NATION OF ISLMAM vs KOREANS.....Many on the line today were CHRISTIANS....as well as PAN AFRICANIST- AFRICAN SPIRITUALIST...the COALITION DID NOT AGREE TO ANYTHING..and Rev Wright is NOT a representative of the coalition....I am extremely disappointed in him...

Leave it to the Nation of Islam with there false prophets to continue being a thorn because they have nothing else to do. The prophet Muhammad was a pedophile, thief, robber, pretty much just looking to gain power and wealth like any other sociopath. Its no wonder his followers behave this way. They like their religion are a joke.

Now that the Justice Seekers, the NAACP, the DOJ and the Korean Society have had their PR peace making treaty and Tommy Pak has apologized to Brother Jeffery, can the media shift from this "he called me "a name, he called me one to nauseau"  to some real meaning reform because that peace treaty goes only as far as a handshake between the leaders at that meeting. Good luck on the banking for blacks, we have had three black banks fail and a black college, and a cdc robbed by black leaders and none of us civil right leaders have a dime to put in it.  That is why LACPAC contacts want to see a change in how we resolve issues. If Pak, who I assume is college educated, would use good damage control methodology and quit running to the "so called black Leaders", defending himself, apologizing to them, collecting petitions from the black community to say he is doing a good job, offering financial compensations to those suspected of extortion and then running to the media with a Whoa is me and making himself the victim, and provoking the protestors to defend themselves in the media. Pak can start by picking up the trash on his property, replacing the trash bin, ask the City to be a reclying Cease the grease drop off, landscape the property in the right of way. Construct two concrete cylinders in the area that he concreted.  LACPAC reported the trash to 311 and if we see it there again longer than 24 hours, WE will get on Ms Davis, she passes by there everyday, why should I have to recruit lacpac members in South Dallas to play code enforcement in her own neighborhood. Now that is just Starters.  I gave my number to Ted Kim, let's see if they will call me cause I am on my way to Austin, to see if I can stop the oversaturation of beer and wine convenience stores ( not beer and wine but convenience stores) in preciously dry areas across the state, I will be at the DOJ to demand to know what are the terms of this impotent peace treaty.  My father taught me there is more than one way to skin a cat. pardon the typos

It is interesting that there was not a picture of the "black leaders" that called the press conference nor a list of who was in attendance.  Where was Anthony Bond, Peter Johnson, Curtis Wilber, and Marion Barnett?  It is also curious to me that the details of the agreement were not disclosed.

I never ask the group to negotiate for me, therefore their agreement will not be honored by me.  If they were ready to leave the protest, they should have left.  That would have been a reasonable thing to do.  I clearly understand long term protest are fluid...people are in and out.

Tommy Pak and any merchant is a danger to themselves and others when they argue with a customer over pricing. It seems that every time I make a purchase whether it was the Fashion Fair Makeup I bought at Macy's to taxes on my Budget Lovefield Rental Car, to the dollar now $1.29 and no water fountain Mc Donald's or no public restrooms at Dollar Tree, or dirty tables at Whataburger, EYE  am complaining about poor service, high costs, and inferior merchandise. but does that give the merchant the right to snatch the merchandise back, or call me a nigger, or demand YA GE HAT MAH STO.  I bitch at light skinned, dark, dark skinned black merchants, Mary Suhm, the city manager, Mayor Rawlings, Senator Royce West, the Feds and yes at Rev. Wright Jeffrey Muhammad, and Juanita Wallace and Yes the Dallas Observer. They may call me a Bitch when I turn my back, but they don't confront me in my face because they know they can expect for me to hit back. Wright, Minister Muhammad, or Juanita can not negotiate for me and the disenfranchised in our community. and I for one will not stop protesting Tommy Pak and especially other young Korean-Americans who are educated. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THEM

Dunbar, I support the terms of the DSDS protest that require Tommy Pak to relocate. I believe the media portrayal of this issue is so elementary, he say, she say debate is intentional to divide the black community and give business investments an excuseto not come here and perpetuate stereotypes of black leaders. I am disheartened to see academy award performances here.

The truth is that NO ONE wants to come to a crime ridden community, not even blacks.  So does that mean that if Koreans come into a depressed community of thugs that they do not have to follow good customer relations or take the law in their hands. Most businesses are taught that a loaf of bread is not worth a life, not the merchant's, the thug, or the customers. Except maybe DART, over a $2.00 bus pass, but we're working on that too.

In Oak cliff, thugs shot law abiding immigrants that were loved in the community, an African immigrant shot a kid stealing a loaf of bread, a minister asked a thug to pull up his pants and he pointed a gun at him caught on a service station camera, my nephew was shot on his grandmother's front porch in broad daylight in a community where the homeowners live behind burglar bars.

This is not about religion, it is about the disrespect for black people in the community where Pak has a store.  KKK members were hidden under their hoods.......you know the white bankers, lawyers, doctors, teachers, preachers, sheriffs, etc...... so I know you are not comparing a legal protest to a Klan burning.

When I enter a room you don't see my religion, you see my race and some of us will not allow the conversation to be on religion rather that race.  That's the old bait and switch tatic.

you're so right. almost ever'where i go to buy anything...gas...food...the store employees are apathetic and lazy. it ain't about what color they are...well..in a meskin grocery store the power goes out and the cashier whips out a pen and paper and keeps takin' our money like nothin's happend...in a corporate owned store like kroger...power goes out you're lucky to leave the store alive...mass employee panic...if that merchant owns that store, he has every right to run it as badly as he wants. he can arm hisself and be as shitty an' hateful as he wants. he can cll his customers hateful names until they never come back. it's his dam store. protesters got the right to stay off his property. anybody that don't like him got the right to vote with their $$$ in another store. if he's as shitty toward his customers as folks say, his business will always be slow and poor. i could never have the patience to run a store like that as  i don't see anything wrong with shootin' thievin' scum like the dogs they are. i spend my $$$ as best i can in stores with a bit nicer folks runnin' them so i don't hate to go there so bad anyways.

The blacks disrespect the Koreans just as much. I"ve worked in South Dallas been in many convienence stores in the area, the blacks treat the store owners and employee's no matter what there race with no respect. It's ok to rob, steal, run customers off they think it's just part of doing business in South Dallas and they wonder why nobody wants to build in South Dallas.

Joyce, pardon the term, but when you use the phrase "bait and switch", it reminds me of another one, "The Pot Calling The Kettle Black".  Its the same type of tactic (forcing someone out because of race) but using different methods of said enforcement. You and I know Dr. King and Rosa didn't make those marches for this kind of situation.

Instead of fighting over a business owner, why not actually step up and clean out the real problems of the neighborhood (poverty, crime, ect..) that prevent business from coming into the area to actually improve the area.

Daniel, I'm making the comparison to the actions and motives of racism, as its on all sides here. True, i've met some awesome people in So. Dallas who are good christian folks who have love and compassion in their hearts, who are the majority in this case, but i've also met people like Muhammad, who instead of wanting to work for equality and true justice for South Dallas want to conquer and divide a neighborhood that reminds some of the better parts of Afghanistan or Gaza Strip.

Also, from what I remember from Jim's story on this, Muhammad was the one who first went into the store and started fighting w/ the owner, calling him names and being disrespectful, hence the tit-for-tat and accusations of bigotry.

Daniel
Daniel

It's inappropriate and offensive to compare the actions of these protesters to the KKK or to Jim Crow, don't you think? I don't know about you, Chris, but I for one don't live in fear of being hung from a tree if I make eyes at a black woman. And last I checked, I was welcome to walk right in the front door and eat at any restaurant in South Dallas. Have some perspective and respect.

That said, Jeffrey  -- er, "Jeffery" -- Muhammad is nothing but a shit-talking lowlife who needs to get a job. I have no idea what happened in the original incident, as I wasn't there -- maybe Pak is a racist asshole -- but if if you spend two months of your life protesting every time somebody offends you, it's time to get a better hobby. And yeah, calling people "white boy" is clearly race-baiting; I get the impression that if the fellow called hi n---er in return, it would be the best present Jeffery Muhammad has gotten since Pak did the same.

My best guess is that they're both shitheels.
