In South Dallas, the Neighborhood Wants to Buy Out That Shamrock Gas Station's Owner

Categories: Development

Schutze broke the story a while back about a group of black people in South Dallas picketing the Diamond Shamrock gas station on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. People in the neighborhood claimed the station's Korean owner had called black customers "broke-ass niggers," imposed a $10 minimum on debit card purchases, called black women "bitches" and even killed a black thief, which the store owner has vehemently denied.

The stream of accusations got South Dallas activists, including Joyce Foreman, Rev. Ronald Wright and Rev. Peter Johnson, fired up. These days they're often protesting in front of the gas station.

And they were just getting started.

The activists have since come up with a name for their coalition: Don't Stop Don't Shop. It's Facebook official and everything. And Wright, spurred on by DSDS, is spearheading an effort to buy the gas station -- an effort he says is close to success.

"I've got a guy ready to write a check tomorrow," Wright tells Unfair Park. There are actually two black suitors looking to buy the place, he says. He won't divulge their names, but he says the positives of the transaction would be two-fold: It gets an accused racist out of South Dallas, and it injects a majority-black area with a likely lucrative, black-owned business.

"Whites have businesses, Mexicans have businesses, Koreans have businesses," Wright says. "In South Dallas! But African-Americans don't own any businesses in their own community."

The Dallas NAACP will meet with the suitors and black leaders tonight to try to hash out a deal. According to Wright, the owner is ready to fold; the only hang-up is the price. (The station owner has rebuffed multiple interview requests from the Observer.)

Wright says he just wants everything over as quickly as possible, as nonviolently as possible. He says he doesn't want to see a repeat of Los Angeles's 1992 Koreatown riots. They just want the keys.

Why don't these malcontented apes go open their own gas station, mini mart? Is in not this person's right to set limits and manage his business in the manner of his choice? Last time I checked, this is the U. S. and not bongo drum land.

Some Koreans specially the ones who came here are rude, it is in their culture specially to other races. They belong to a warrior culture and are agressive when provoked. The koreans who are born here and grew up here are more american in manners and culture.

It is a misunderstanding of cultures that are is going on here.

"Some" Koreans? Well so what? "Some" of every race are rude, so what's your point enlightened asshole? Why is it worth mentioning Koreans when "some" of every race are rude?

They're a "warrior race"? Welp, sounds like racism to me, let me guess black people are a "cotton picking slave race" right? Firstly, you have no evidence for your absurd "warrior race" claims, secondly it's has nothing to do with anything going on today or the behavior of any Korean person today. Go find me proof that historical behavior has any genetic link or stop talking out of your ass.

That's like saying Germans are aggressive because some Germans used to be a genocide race. You can keep making an unfounded, absurd, ignorant link between historical behavior and present day behavior as long as you cast the history of every other ethnic group to their genetics in which case black people are useless because they're a cotton picking slave race that builds mud huts. I'll take the warrior race, thanks. You know what you remind me of? Racist black supremacists that say Korean people are racist because they don't play with black dolls yet the mere idea of a black child playing with a Korean doll is fucking hilarious. You like to put these burdens on Koreans and act as if they're the only ones that act like this. Aggressive when provoked? Every one of every race is aggressive when provoked you moron, it has nothing to do with your warrior race nonsense it's human behavior. Are you black tough guy? You're telling me you won't become aggressive if I called you a "nigger" repeatedly?

Or isn't that why black people are protesting here in the first place? But that's right, say this about Korean people as if this is somehow unique to Korean people. We know that Koreans are aggressive when provoked, so is everyone else.

"Whites have businesses, Mexicans have businesses, Koreans have businesses," Wright says. "In South Dallas! But African-Americans don't own any businesses in their own community."This quote from the article reminds me of a scene involving some men in the neighborhood discussing the Korean-owned bodega in Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" (1989).  If you haven't seen the movie . . . you should.

Yeah and the people in this living comedy are just as useless as the people in the movie.

Like the movie they sit on a corner as geriatric fools mad as hell about a Korean guy opening a business in their neighborhood and when one of them makes the genius revelation that they're either stupid or the Korean is a genius, the other black guy's response is, "it's got to be because we're black". They even mention in the movie that it's been boarded up for YEARS, and not one enterprising black person decided that it would be a great idea to open a business there. If you press them they'll probably say it's racism trying to keep the black man down. Everything is racism, years of social welfare and a shattered sense of self have left black people in ruins, they don't want to do anything because everything is held down by paranoia fueled conspiracy theories which make it impossible to live. Want to get a job? Can't, whitey is holding me down. Want to open a business? Can't, jews run the banks and I can't get a loan. Want to get gas? Can't, those slant eyed Chinese Koreans or those dothead Gandhi's are gouging me at the pumps. That's the running theme for black people in general; complain about everything and actually do nothing. But here's the funniest part, these morons are saying they'll take it over. Where were they before this happened? You need a controversy to open a business? Why couldn't they open it for community's sake? Is that the black strategy? Open a business for every controversy? And if you didn't open the business with due diligence, in earnest, what makes me believe you can run it because you assume control of it after a controversy? Who do I think will run the business better, the guy who started it, assumed the risks, made the investment or the vultures who swoop in after a made up conspiracy ruins the business and do a shakedown? Only one of the parties was ever interested in running a business and it isn't the black people.

A man once came to see the Buddha to get help with his problems. After the man had told the Buddha one of his problems and asked for help, the Buddha replied: "I cannot help you get rid of that problem."The man was surprised that the Buddha could not help him in this regard, but he told the Buddha about another problem; he thought to himself that the Buddha should at least be able to help him with that problem. But the Buddha told him "I cannot help you with that problem either."The man started to get impatient. He said: "How can it be that you are the perfectly Enlightened Buddha, when you can’t even help people get rid of their problems?" The Buddha answered: "You will always have 83 problems in your life. Sometimes a problem will go, but then another problem will come. I cannot help you with that."The baffled man asked the Buddha: "But, what can you help me with, then?" The Buddha replied: "I can help you get rid of your 84th problem." The man asked: "But what is my 84th problem?" The Buddha replied: "That you want to get rid of your 83 problems."

Hey the South Dallas folks ought to be thankful that damn gas station is even functional.  The fucking raghead that owns the Valero on Sylvan and 30 let the credit card machines and other crap go broken for over two years before some Mexican folks put pressure on him.

These jackoff taliban and vietcong owners don't give a shit about their customers in the hood.  That aforementioned Valero had half the fucking pumps broken, debit card readers always shitted on, car wash broken forever, rats in the sandwhich shop, lights never working, ten pounds of shit in the commode, old used condoms on the floor of the atrium and much more.

While it would definitely be easier to go shop elsewhere its the closest gas station in its area.  Truth is...  if he had this store just 2 more miles north, you know he wouldnt have let this shit get so bad.

This is America....serve your customers or get the fuck out of business.

I am a Korean and study at the state of Minnesota. Sorry for my poor English writing.

Though I am Korean, I can't understand why Korean-American owners impose "no credit card policy under $10 purchase." Is it a standard? Isn't it illegal? I never experience that any other owners impose this kind of greedy policy. That is insane.

Moreover, these Koreans, especially, the gas station owner, Park, is dependent on the African-Americans customers at South Dallas. Why he does not appreciate to them? Why does he have a racial attitude to African-Americans, though he is a colored person too? These elements became the reasons that African-Americans assaulted Koreans in 1992.

You make several premature assumptions:A) The Korean guy was racist.B) The Korean guy mistreats his customers.C) The Korean guy doesn't appreciate his customers.None of this is proven. Minimum purchase limits are legal. There's nothing greedy about a minimum limit for $10, stupid. Anyone can avoid the minimum limit by paying IN CASH. There's a minimum limit because debit card transactions incur fees and he wants more profit than he's paying in fees per transaction. You're a university student, would you sell a $5 textbook on ebay when it's going to cost you $10 to ship it? Look, I understand black people are unable to do simple arithmetic, nobody's demanding that you carry $800 in cash. It's a $10 limit stupid, all you need to carry is $10 in cash, is that so fucking hard? If what you're buying is over $10 use your damn debit card. What's "insane" about that? Does a vending machine blow your mind? How about sliding doors? We don't need you acting like some pussified ambassador for U.S. Koreans, are you a U.S. citizen? Did you grow up in the U.S.? Did you go to public school with black people? Did you live with black people? You're probably here on a study visa. So what gives you the right or knowledge to sit there and condemn all U.S. Koreans and make a formed judgement on race relations between the two? What do you know about the riots in '92 shit head? The news footage of blacks streaming out of Korean businesses committing wholesale robbery shows it was little more than black people trying to steal shit. A black girl was shot because she punched a Korean lady three times, it was a tragic misunderstanding, but that excuses robbing, burning down and killing any Korean person and business in sight? Fuck you.

Wow..it's really shocking and scary to find these African-Americans think they are doing nothing wrong. Finding a hate racist speech by a African-Americans is about as easy as shooting the broadside of a barn. Even a blind man can do it. However, it is Black custom to think that "If other race criticize Black, that is hate speech and racism. However, when we Black speak so many disgusting hate speech to other race, that is perfectly normal and OK." Typical Black double standard..cowardly and sickening.

So what are the lessons to be learned here?  1) In South Dallas, black people don't like it when Koreans who own convenience stores with high prices and less than courteous service run businesses in their community. 2) Black people will eventually rise up as a community and "deal" with such problems. 3) Many (probably white) people who read this paper don't like it when Black people respond like they have done in this case...and class is not over yet...

No
No

The lessons to be learned here are as follows:1. Black people will complain about EVERYTHING.2. The crux of this issue was not the racist statements, according to the media Jeffrey had a problem with the $10 minimum and another video on YouTube shows he or one of his supporters has a problem with gas being $3.29 in a Korean gas station while it's $3.10 somewhere else. They think it's a racist conspiracy to gouge black people.3. That same YouTube video shows that moron going around asking other gas stations if they have a $10 minimum and reveling in the fact that some don't, look, just because some stores eat the fees or don't incur them through deals doesn't mean the Korean guy has the same. Just because someone is charging $3.10 does NOT mean the Korean has to. What part of free market don't you socialist welfare addicts understand? Not everything is equal, price matching is optional GET OVER IT.4. The Korean guy hasn't done anything wrong per se, except establish a business in a nest of militant black supremacists. You think this would have happened in a white community? No. Because white people don't have a paranoia complex where by they think everything is a racist conspiracy against them. When was the last time a white person played the race card? Especially over something as miniscule as gas prices or a $10 minimum?Go look at the Facebook page for Don't Stop Don't Shop and you'll see a black supremacist hang out. Even one lady talking about old dead white people. The one normal black person I've seen disagreed with the whole protest and they ignored him.

On the DSDS facebook page an argument was made that this gas station owner has to price his gas cheaper because people can't make it to the next gas station and that the prices were higher there anyway. Well if the prices were higher there, both gas stations are priced high, by what law is any single gas station owner required to subsidize the price of fuel for your convenience? Whose fault is it that someone doesn't have enough fuel to make it to the next gas station? Do black people need someone to dress them in the morning too? This argument is a rehash of the black welfare state.I can't walk into Best Buy and demand they price match and if they say no, accuse them of racism and tell them to go back to China. So what makes him think he can walk into a gas station, ignore the rules, say he wants to pay under the $10 minimum and he wants cheaper gas and when the guy says no get mad and tell him to go back to China? Is he stupid? Why can't he be civil god damn it?

"Now let me write a few words about socialism."In other words, you babble on and nitpick my words. Listen, I already know socialism is evident in some of the policies instituted in the U.S., it's obvious when I call you a socialist I'm calling you a full blown socialist as in someone who believes in distribution of wealth far beyond what the government already provides. Do I care if the government already taxes and gives out welfare? Not really. But when you make an asinine statement to the effect that a business owner MUST appease the community, you're a socialist."What the protesters are doing is totally legal in this country."And when did I ever say it was illegal? I've known from the beginning it wasn't illegal. The legality of the actions of either side was never an issue for me. I know damn well what they're doing is legal, so were the actions of the Korean guy, so what? Who gives a shit? We're talking about how moronic the protest is and the root of it, not whether the whole thing is illegal."what the protesters are doing is anything but childish."Wrong, it's completely childish. You tell me how a group of people who have NO proof anything has ever occurred (and yes, the burden of proof is on THEM, not the gas station owner) but would waste time on a sidewalk complaining. Look, we already know the make up of the people involved, go look at the Facebook page, they're black supremacists with a chip on their shoulder consistently spouting off about some black revolution that hasn't happened and will never happen because all they do is whine about the socioeconomic ills plaguing their community but do nothing about it unless they have a reason to get angry, which is far and few in between. They're so behind they're even behind the immigrants. Discrimination isn't a factor here because discrimination occurs against immigrants all the time yet immigrants still make money here. And this is on top of those socialist welfare programs you mentioned, yet they STILL can't make money here. Instead, they sit at home, collect welfare and hustle and when they "heard" that someone said something racist it's a full force waste of time down by a gas station. And their evidence? Gas costs $.19 cents more than the next station (which is still hilariously $.60 lower than my gas station) and he imposes a $10 minimum for debit cards.Of course it's legal for black people to say they're not shopping there due to ridiculously stupid and unsubstantiated claims, we're talking about those ridiculously stupid and unsubstantiated claims. It's also legal for the gas station owner to price himself modestly and then go out of business because a bunch of morons want gas at $1.00 while the rest of the nation struggles around the $3.00 mark. They also want to use their debit cards for a pack of a gum. Your market science nonsense falls on deaf ears, it's totally irrelevant and again there's no requirement for him to appease anyone. Even if he were to appease them he wouldn't be making money anyway since they're asking for below market prices since obviously the low gas price of $3.29 isn't good enough for them.

trudat

OOOOOOOOk; If your feelings aren't hurt, maybe you just love Koreans or hate Blacks or something.  Regardless; you sure seem to be unnecessarily upset about this situation.  Being upset and mad when Black folks organize and use the legal tools available to any citizen in this country is often a response on the part of white racist to these kinds of situations. If that's your problem, I understand.  If you're a Korean or if you have ties to the store owner; I understand. But it might help your argument sometimes to try to stick to the facts and avoid inflamatory vitriol and pointless emotionalism.

Now let me write a few words about socialism.  This country has had "socialism" since it started. Just for your information, the armed forces, many highways, most fire departments, most public libraries, etc. are state financed "socialist" institutions.  The government (or state) has given tax money to individuals, companies, etc. on a regular basis in a "socialistic" way for years.  Therefore, the people in this country are (by extention) socialist (you too) - whether they know and admit it or not. This is a "socialist" country...Love it or leave it...just joking...But if this is too much for you, go to the nearest public library and do some research on your own...don't just take my word for it.

Now, in response to your request for an "answer"; One of the basic tenets of business is the old mantra about "supply and demand".  A businessperson should see a demand for his/her good/service before setting up a business in order to maximize profits.  If the assessments of the businessman are correct, money can be made by providing the customers with what they want.  When the demand can no longer be fullfilled; it is generally accepted that there will be no profits.  That is what's happening at the Shamrock.  The owner is not supplying the community with the product that they want.  The community is choosing to express its' dissatisfaction by doing what it is doing.  What the protesters are doing is totally legal in this country.  This is an old fashioned picture of the dynamics and politics of business.  The racist sentiments posted in many comments here are also an old fashioned picture of the politics of business - especially in Dallas, Texas.  Furthermore - to be direct and more clearly understood; what the protesters are doing is anything but childish. As a matter of fact, what they are doing shows more maturity than the average citizen shows. They are collectively using the institution of politics to shape the institution of economics in their community.

This will be my last comment to you on this subject.  Best wishes and may you grow into a truly positive thinker in the future...

Really
Really

By the way, you let me know the answer to this. In true socialist fashion you claim that if the people are protesting the Korean isn't doing what should be done. So if the people wanted free gas and protests otherwise, should he be forced to give them free gas? By your logic the mere existence of a protest and unhappiness in the community means he is wrong. By your logic the concept of discipline doesn't exist. If a child is crying it's because you failed as a parent, not because the child is wrong because he/she wants you to buy them $300.00 worth of toys. You and I both know that your logic is bullshit. If this gas station were transplanted into a white community it would do fine simply because the community around the gas station is fine. Because it exists in a community full of troublemakers who appear to be unable to grasp the concept of "rules" it's currently facing an issue.

Really
Really

My feelings aren't hurt. I'm not one of those morons protesting over nothing. For someone who spouts off about marketplace and money you sound like a socialist. You take a deep breath and based on the stench, realize your head is too far up your ass that you're in danger of suffocating.

"Whites have businesses, Mexicans have businesses, Koreans have businesses," Wright says. "In South Dallas! But African-Americans don't own any businesses in their own community."

Wow, really!

Blacks typically don't support black business in the way they support other non-black owned business in the hood. This is why so many foreigner do well in the black community. There are some people who wait for the opportunity to protest because they lack the skills to actually make a difference in the hood. It's the same folk you see complaining on every city level with no real solutions, just complaining.

Change is coming to South Dallas slowly, and those same people who are complaining and protesting are not sitting at the solution table. Black folk will eventually loose South Dallas because the locality of South Dallas is sustainable.

And for the record, get that rastafarian shit out of here. The gas station owner is a U.S. citizen who served in the national guard. I take the word of a man who's trying to make a living over some ass who wants to stir up trouble and his mob of lowlife morons who believe everything they hear without ever thinking it might be an outright lie. Like how the gas station owner supposedly shot someone, give me a break. The link in the article says it all:

Gas station owner:"how can I be a racist to work in anall-Black community for that long? I have Black people who work forme at the store, I hire Black people all the time. Most of thefighting and crime at my store is between Black people and Blackpeople."

And I'm going to ignore this rational sounding man who's literally knee deep in the black community and instead believe this racebaiting nonsense?:"had called black customers "broke-ass niggers," imposed a $10 minimum on debit card purchases, called black women "bitches" and even killed a black thief,"

In fact what they accuse him of doing sounds like rumors made up by black people. The only people I ever see calling someone a "broke-ass nigger" is black people calling each other "broke-ass niggers". Calling black women "bitches"? Black people do that all the time. This sounds like black people making shit up to crucify an innocent business owner.

And I love how these morons think imposing a $10 minimum is a racist conspiracy, it has nothing at all to do with fees associated with debit cards, nope, IT'S RACISM FOLKS. Give me a break. A $10 minimum is the new burning cross on your lawn.

The gas station has a minimum limit for debit card purchases. This is not an abnormal racist conspiracy, even colleges do this. It's even worse that he told a Korean guy to go back to China, he's so racist thinks all Asian people are Chinese, that's how ignorant and uneducated he is.

You can think what you want about Koreans. I've made up my mind on black people too: Uneducated hysterical whiners who cry big about the smallest issues but contribute little to society. A bunch that thinks it's fine to be racist towards everyone but the other way around and it's a problem. Rape a white girl? Who cares? Rape a black girl? IT'S RACISM! Five white guys beat up a black guy, IT'S RACISM, sixteen black guys beat up a white guy for dating a black girl and "boys will be boys." Google the Nappy Hair book controversy and you'll see how hysterical black people get over NOTHING.

Taking over the gas station? Don't make me laugh. Why are there hardly any black businesses? Why are first generation immigrants setting up businesses while black people are busy sitting around whining? Go look at the store robbery videos on YouTube and one thing is consistent, it's almost always black people doing the robbing. Why are black people limited to robbing businesses, not setting any up like the whites, Koreans, Chinese and Indians? Is it a conspiracy to keep the black person down? Or maybe they're too damn lazy.

Segregation ended decades ago but it still exists in the form of black people self-segregating, turning communities black-only, asking for black businesses, black-only scholarships, affirmative action, etcetera. You can't tell me these aren't racist with a straight face. So in the end you can hate Korean people, white people, Indian people, I'll hate black people and we'll all hate each other. Or you can end this self-segregation, cut the racist ignorance, get educated, get out of the hood and welcome non-black people into your communities and put your money where your mouth is on equality.

I don't know what planet you live on, there's nothing remarkable about gas at $3.39/gal, not enough for you to incorrectly label him as a "chinaman" which you have no problem doing since you're blatantly racist. Chinaman? I've seen prices near $4.00. Don't blame the Korean guy with some made up conspiracy where he's trying to gouge black people, he knows black people are poor so there's no reason he would do this.

Did I sound racist? Sorry, I'm trying to act like you SWAGG.

you think 3.39 gas is reasonable? You probably dont even understand why gas is 3.39.

Who cares? Get that strawman argument out of here. The argument isn't whether the price is justified, the argument is whether the price is remarkable. We can debate for fifty years as to what price the gas should be according to your arcane formula or mine but that's not the argument. The argument is that on a national scale $3.39 is not remarkable. In my area gas prices are closer to $3.60-$3.80. In some areas the gas prices may be lower than $3.39. Ever heard of a spectrum?

The guy MIGHT have a valid complaint if the gas prices were >$4.00 but even then there's no proof that this is racism anyway and not just overt greed. $3.39 is NOT greed and there's no proof it's racism, not even close. If $3.39 is racism, $3.80/gal is bloody murder and I should call the police on my local gas station.

Shell on McKinney Ave near Fairmont $3.87 at 10 am today.  I had to buy a few gallons because I was on fumes.  Later filled on on Mockiingbird for $3.37, but we all know where to go for better prices on gasoline.

Location, number of nearby competitors, cost from wholesaler etc determine pump price, not altruism.

Just wait until the new African American (or is now People of Color?)  take over and see how prices and level of service change.  I'm betting it takes a tough operator to make it work at that spot and this Korean guy is working his kundingee off to do so.

I don't shop where I'm not happy and don't need to organize a boycott or anything, I just go somewhere else, I fire them so to speak, like that Romney guy.

And noting that Jim "broke this story" is really funny.  How do you break a story about some activists protesting a business?

The Shell at McKinney and Bowen is just as bad if not worse, the Exxon on Lemmon at 75 is surprisingly not that bad though, although there are more homeless people harassing you.
