Mark Cuban Saved the Greenville St. Patrick's Day Parade: "I Didn't Want to See it Go Away"

If he would be the grand marshal, they'd make him it for life.
Tell that quivering liver of yours to relax: The Greenville Avenue St. Patrick's Day Parade marches on -- thanks to a guy who knows a little something about spring parades.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has cut a $40,000 check to the Greenville Avenue Area Business Association to save the parade, while pledging another $25,000 to the parade's scholarship fund. GAABA President Jorge Levy reached out to Cuban via email on February 8. He wrote back exactly seven minutes later -- "Can't let it die," he told Levy -- and pledged the full amount. The money's already in the bank.

"It's a Dallas tradition that I have really enjoyed," Cuban told me via email today. "I didn't want to see it go away."

The parade started in 1979. It was supported financially by the Observer from 1997 to 2010, but in recent years, as the city required more police and more barricades, the cost of the parade sky-rocketed from less than $50,000 to close to six figures. The paper pulled out last year to concentrate on an annual St. Patrick's Day concert up the road, and this year GAABA was short about $40,000, its organizers said. If they didn't raise it by Friday, they said, they were pulling the plug.

Groundswell fundraising efforts never really swelled. A FundRazr campaign raised about $1,600, and a CrowdTilt campaign about $2,000 -- a grand of which came from the owners of CrowdTilt.

Cuban apparently declined an invitation to be the grand marshal, but he pledged something even better: He told Levy he was also open to supporting the parade in future years.

In related news, how cool would it be to have so much money that you could just save all the stuff you liked?

Let's all pay homage to the leprechaun who magically saved Dallas' St. Patrick's Day Parade tradition. "Go raibh maith agat," Mark. (Irish for "Thank You.")

Cool beans to have Cuban around, I've worked in the area during the parade and it brings a ton of business in, sad that those same businesses don't help out more. I'll be rolling in the parade this year so be sure to cheer the guys in chairs on!

Mark Cuban is THE BEST!!!  He always comes to the aid of Dallas traditions without hesitation... maybe he could teach "politicians" (locally and nationally) how to do whats right!  Its just a parade he is rescuing this time but its the principal, he is here for our city and shows his appreciation in his own ways... YOU GO MARK!!!!!  Maybe you should buy the Cowboys....

I think they should charge more to get in to help raise money for next year and to discourage the trashy people that have started to show up the past couple of years from coming.

I don't live in Dallas, just a passer on the Internet. Just wanted to say how I'm loving the support for Cuban. This town seems like a bunch of good folks. And that the parade meant a lot to you guys. Good stuff!

Can we get a Mark Cuban Elementary School and save one of the 11 schools due to close this fall?

I think what he understands is the business he brings to the area as well.  Kudos to Mark on smart thinking!

Mr. Cuban is so my new hero. I wonder if he has any job openings. It might be intense but would always be interesting.

Way to go Mark Cuban! Maybe Jerry would've coughed up the money if the parade went through Jerry World and he could charge $10 admission and sell $20 green beer

I find it amusing that so many many people have responded to this thread and no one said a negative word about Cuban. Usually, in a thread of this type someone has to bash someone else to feel better about themselves. I think it says a lot about Cuban that, in such a public thread, no one has uttered a negative word.

Everyone should wear one of their Mavs green gimmie t-shirts that Saturday. If you have been to a Mavericks game in the last half decade, you probably have one in your closet. Wear it! Many people the last few years have worn their Mavs shirts at the parade, since it's the only green shirt they own. Now it's mandatory.

Thank you Mark,

I'll be running in the 5k race again and had so much fun after the race last year, I was looking forward to it again. In fact this year, I might do a little early morning tailgating and make breakfast before the race. This is a formal invitation for Mark to come by for my rustic scrambled eggs or frittata and good spicy Bloody Mary.

Thanks again Mark. You are a class act and feel we are fortunate to have you in Dallas!!

Mark Cuban needs to stop doing this stuff...  I need to find a reason not to keep falling more and more in love with him.  lol

You didn't read all the comments - some knucklehead above was bemoaning the fact that he didn't give the money to charity instead.  Because apparently billionaires don't have enough money to pitch in 40 grand for a parade AND donate money to ophanages and homeless shelters.
