On the Calatrava For a Sneak Peek at the Weekend's Doings and a Giant Puppet Head

The first thing we need to remind you about the impending Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge Celebration this weekend is that there will be "mammoth puppets." If this information makes you feel the need to stay home, perhaps under the bed, that's fine and understandable. For the rest of us, there was a preview of the bridge celebrations Monday afternoon, featuring Gail Thomas of the Trinity Trust, Craig Holcomb from the Trinity Commons Foundation, City Manager Mary Suhm (in a non-speaking role) and some lovely lady mariachis, among others.

For now, the middle of the bridge is very quiet, the stillness broken only by the beeping of trucks backing up, train cars whistling by on the trestle to the west, and, Monday, the harmonious din of workers putting up an army of Porta-Potties.

Holcomb told the gathered crowd of reporters and city workers that they're expecting a huge turnout for the celebration. He said they'll limit the number of people that can be on the bridge to approximately 6,750 at a time, and warned that "some waiting may be involved" for events on the bridge itself.

Just remember: No driving on the Margaret Hunt Hill till the end of the month, people.
In West Dallas, of course, there will be Bridge-O-Rama, including those aforementioned giant puppets parading down Singleton. One of them showed up for the presser today, a hairy, sad-faced looking guy named Victor Considerant, a French explorer who founded La Réunion. You can look at a full line-up of events right here.

"We are truly bridging the Trinity for the love of the city," Gail Thomas said. "We want to see in the future festivities all up and down the Trinity River Corridor, celebrating the connectivity of the city... This is real urban emergence."

Craig Holcomb compared the event to a high school graduation, given that the bridge has been in the works for (way more than) 12 years. "On Sunday, we're commencing the next stage in the future of Dallas," he said.

"Walk, run, skip or do cartwheels over the top of this bridge," added Todd Fiscus, the event coordinator at Todd Events, which is handling the festivities. "Because you'll never be able to do it again."

So they are going to celebrate the bridge over the trinity ditch. I can hardly wait for the park in the flood plain.

Why are Dallas people so mean and negative?

Oh heck yes lets have folks walking around wearing Large wind catching objects on an unobstructed bridge in March ....

What can possibly go wrong ?

So..$200 dollars to see Lyle Lovett on Friday? LOL What a fucking joke..I guess the Dallas business and art elite are afraid to mingle with the great unwashed..even if it is only 6437 of them at a time.  As one of my friends pointed out you can get an obstructed view at the Madonna concert for $187.

And as far as the puppets are concerned.  Kudos to all the artists involved in the Parade of Giants.  They have been hard at work creating something fun for the celebrations and deserve some props.

As well, anyone notice that here are no local murals down there?  Just Fairey's tired ass Obey crap.  Told ya so!

See the picture of Mary Suhm above?  See what's over her shoulder?  It's a bridge. An existing bridge.  An existing bridge that worked just fine, until the construction project messed up the road on either side. Why did we need to spend all this money on a new bridge when all we needed was a ramp from Woodall Rodgers to the bridge?  There has been a way to get over the Trinity at this point forever.  Why will a new bridge suddenly spur redevelopment?  Does someone, or many, have some land speculation going on?

Ouch, $10 to park your car. $3 if you park all the way down at the jail.

The bridge is 5 minutes or less via bicycle from the Katy Trail. Go by bike and save yourself the hassle and time of parking then walking a mile each way. Hang a right at the Hard Rock Cafe, go under 35 and you are practically there. The levee roads are dry and open to ride bikes on.

congratulations to the students, artists and good citizens that donated time and talent to create those wonderful puppets.....unfortunately i cannot resist joining in the fun and must say i thought David Crosby had been beheaded.

When I read "there will be "mammoth puppets." I thought it meant that Leppert, Rep. Johnson, Steve Blow and the other DMN hacks, Belo Executives, Corp of Engineers, Dallas Taxpayers, and the Dallas City Council were attending.

But you meant actual mammoth puppets.

Major disappointment.

Well the "mammoth puppets" go well with a "mammoth" pork barrel projects for real estate speculators.

Limiting the number of folks on the bridge to 6750, humm, sounds like a load problem. Hope the damn thing don't fall down but the puppet head is a nice touch, looks like a bad knockoff of Guy Falks.

Before I read the article, I was wondering how the opening of this bridge was linked to the late  magician Doug Henning.

When I see things like that giant puppet head, I find myself saying "I really do not understand rich white people."

'LOVELY LADY' mariachis!? Not 'talented female' mariachis? Seriously? Is this some Park Cities Junior League newsletter?

Had they been male, would you have called them 'some buff gentleman mariachis'? Really?

And looks to me like that puppet head is smiling/smirking underneath that mustache, not sad. Prob because he was turned on by those "lovely" musicians and hoping they were wenches, not ladies. The dude is French, after all...

Why do the people in this town ignore chances to include everyone in all the events surrounding a bridge we all paid for? Why do "foundations" that have up to now been boondoggles try and make themselves look better by creating events that outprice everyday Dallasites?  Why will there only be Shepard Fairey murals for people to look at whilst paying ten bucks for parking in a spot that most crackers still won't venture into by themselves?

Bigdsenorita

When that actually happens, be sure to let everyone know. Until then, take comfort in knowing just how clevver we all think you are.

Because, well you know the people from Oak Cliff and West Dallas who made those objects must be really stupid and not of thoughta that, riiiiiiight????

Well, it got Grumpy Demo to get his metaphor all mixed up such that puppets are now the manipulators, not the other way around, so there's that redevelopment.

Other than that, though, it's pretty much business as usual.

Shouldn't you include in your calculation the cost of replacing your bike after it's stolen?

Well I read Mattie Nash will be in there to. So that maked Crosby, Nash...now if we can just get Stills and Young, we've got a folk band.

Actually the Dallas Fire Department spokesperson was on the news last night and said the number wasn't related to load but to the number of people who could safely and quickly exit the bridge given that there are only two "exits" on each end. She also said it was the first time they'd had to calculate the maximum occupancy for a bridge and they erred on the side of caution.

Rich white people did not make or recruit the puppets. 15 organizations from all over the area, including students at Paul Quinn College, students at Pinkston High School, the families of some of the Hispanic and African-Americans who will be represented by puppets in the parade etc.

And, those groups were overseen by 15 artists, who are about as far from rich as you can get and represent almost single ethnicity Dallas has to offer.

When I see things like that comment above, I find myself saying, "I really do not understand where Tim Covington's brain is."

In America most people are comfortable with parades featuring giant balloon animals. In Europe and elsewhere, puppets are very common (look up Semana Grande in Spain). Since West Dallas has a French connection and the bridge was designed by a Spanish architect, I think the giant puppets are appropriate.

But if your argument is that only rich white people travel outside the country, that is a topic for another blog.

Do you have a personal beef against French men, or just read about them from articles?

A secret squirrel friend said that Big Sis Napolitano is catering the event with her alphabet soup of tier 1 employees. Throw in whatever the city and county add and I imagine it would be very safe this weekend.

You have got to be kidding me, has Janet Napolitano taken over the DFD too. Hope the ODers crash the party.

Oh yes they did (rich white people) recrute the puppets-they are on the city council and in the commisioners court.

Grumpy Demo

"Since West Dallas has a French connection"?Not for at least 100 years, but of course to the Park Cities, Citizen Council crowd the French are much preferred to the actual, soon to be relocated, Mexican American residents.

Bigdsenorita
Bigdsenorita

Exactly. Because poor college students never travel to Europe, stay in pensiones and hostels and come back to make things like this happen in the States. Never. Only rich white people go overseas. Jeeesh.

People over here only steal the bikes of people who dont wear helmets. We melt them down and then recycle them into $15,000 espresso machines for our oh-so-la-de-da coffee shops.

My point is not about the artists but that we have a suspension bridge (over budget) over what normally is a dried river bed. The only time that it has any degree of water in it is when it floods and for that we want to have a toll road smack dab in the middle of it. Does this make sense? How about 2 more over budget suspension bridges. Oh it’s only tax dollars so let us squander more. Who is responsible for this? Why the city council of course (the puppets who I alluded to)

On a related note in the DMN they had a piece about the impact on west Dallas. One quote that is obvious to me is that as development (speculation by developers) increases in west Dallas (because of the bridge) then the residence who live there will experience higher property taxes due to higher property values. It was noted that the residence will be taxed out of their homes as they will not be able to afford the higher taxes. Yes they might be able to make a profit off of the sale of their property but will they be able to turn that into a new home and afford the higher costs that most always are associated with this? My guess is no. It is extremely difficult to successfully make such a move and come out ahead. And you know what? No one will be there to help them. Not the developers or any member of the city council that represents them.

Bigdsenorita
Bigdsenorita

Really. Rich white people recruited Carolyn Davis? And Scott Griggs? And Angela Hunt? And Elba Garcia?

Wow. The truth comes out. Thank you Mister Mean for your insightful and oh so woefully ignorant take on Dallas politics.

Some of them are American?

Bigdsenorita
Bigdsenorita

Who caused the African-American population that was living in those homes prior to be relocated who caused the Caucasians who were there to be relocated who caused the Native Americans who were there before that to be relocated...and so on and so on and scooby dooby do-oo.

Things change. But to the Grumpy Demo crowd, it better not be a Mexican-American who has to make a change! Lordy lordy no.
