Film Critical of Komen, Pink Ribbons, Inc., Opens in Canada Today. No U.S. Date Set Yet.

Nancy Brinker's among those interviewed in director Léa Pool's documentary Pink Ribbons, Inc., based on the book of the same name
Amidst all the ruckus, resignations and double-talking over Susan G. Komen for the Cure's politically charged move to pull its breast-cancer screening funding from Planned Parenthood, you should also be aware: Dallas-based Komen's actually the subject of a documentary that opens in Canada today that takes a very dim view of Nancy Brinker's efforts to turn the foundation into a corporation fueled by a shiny pink PR campaign. As John Anderson wrote in his Variety review in September, when director Léa Pool's Pink Ribbons, Inc. (based on Samantha King's 2008 book) debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival:
Along with such commentators as author and cancer survivor Barbara Ehrenreich (Nickled and Dimed), Dr. Susan Love, Nancy Brinker of Susan G. Komen for the Cure (which has funneled $1.9 billion into fighting breast cancer and, as several people ask, for what?), the film also turns the spotlight over to ordinary cancer victims, one of whom puts the public-relations spin into very clear perspective. "The message," she says, "is that if you just try really hard, you can beat it. Just try really hard." Those who die, she adds, "weren't trying very hard."
Right now there are no U.S. screenings or release dates scheduled. This morning I asked Jennifer Mair, a publicist for the National Film Board of Canada based out of Toronto, if this week's uproar surrounding the LBJ Freeway-HQ'd Komen has changed their distribution plans. She says the film will be released in the U.S. through New York-based First Run Features. I spoke to someone there this morning, and, no, there are no firm dates for U.S. release. Not yet. "But it's coming up -- later this year, spring or early summer." The trailer's below.

Update at 10:15 a.m.: Komen just issued this statement apologizing for "recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives." It also says it "will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities."

Update at 10:45 a.m.: Also, this just in -- a statement from Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the daughter of the late Texas governor Ann Richards. It's below, but says, in short: "We are enormously grateful that the Komen Foundation has clarified its grantmaking criteria, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Komen partners, leaders and volunteers."

Here's Cecile Richards's statement in full:
"The outpouring of support for women in need of lifesaving breast cancer screening this week has been astonishing and is a testament to our nation's compassion and sincerity.

"During the last week, millions spontaneously joined a national conversation about lifesaving breast cancer prevention care and reinforced shared values about access to health care for all. This compassionate outcry in support of those most in need rose above political, ideological, and cultural divides, and will surely be recognized as one of our nation's better moments during a contentious political time. Planned Parenthood thanks each and every person who has contributed to elevating the importance of breast cancer prevention for so many women in need.

"In recent weeks, the treasured relationship between the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and Planned Parenthood has been challenged, and we are now heartened that we can continue to work in partnership toward our shared commitment to breast health for the most underserved women. We are enormously grateful that the Komen Foundation has clarified its grantmaking criteria, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Komen partners, leaders and volunteers. What these past few days have demonstrated is the deep resolve all Americans share in the fight against cancer, and we honor those who are at the helm of this battle.

"Planned Parenthood has been a trusted partner with the Komen Foundation in early cancer detection and prevention services. In particular, Planned Parenthood helps the Komen Foundation reach vulnerable populations -- low-income women, African-American women, and Latinas -- especially in rural areas and underserved communities where Planned Parenthood health centers are their only source of health care. With Komen Foundation grants, over the past five years, Planned Parenthood health centers provided nearly 170,000 clinical breast exams and more than 6,400 mammogram referrals. With the outpouring of support over the past week, even more women in need will receive lifesaving breast cancer care."

I found this article by Google-searching "bring pink ribbons inc to dallas."  This documentary HAS to run here!  I haven't trusted the pink ribbon brigade since I read Barbara Ehrenreich's book "Brightsided," where she slams the merchandising of breast cancer in the form of pink ribbons, teddy bears and other crap.  I seriously wonder how hard their working to find a cure, since there's so much money in mammograms and prescription drugs, not to mention the huge salaries for the executive directors and income from pink-ribbon related merchandise.  Can we launch a campaign to bring the film to Dallas?

Okay everybody happy, got all the talking points in.....let's wrap it up since the next "outrage" is just a news cycle away....it was a great fundraising tool though....so salute

This is bullshit.  Definition of cancer: An abnormal growth of cells which tend to proliferate in an uncontrolled way and, in some cases, to metastasize (spread).

Between breast, and lung, and balls, and brain, and skin, and etc., etc., etc., you'd think between all the monies given to cancer societies someone, anyone, singularly or combined, would cure this shit.  But noooooooo, not a chance.  Too much money to be made on the backs of the sick/dead.  Fuck them all.

Just keep the pink off the football players from now on.  Please.  What a fucking farce that marketing ploy.  Not even a target demographic for titty lumps and we have to see these guys in pink pumps.  That's my only request.

Yesterday, WFAA had a story about how Parkland's also under investigation, but that Komen never said anything to them about their funds being yanked:

http://www.wfaa.com/news/healt...

Definitely more fuel for the claim the new rule was created as an excuse to target just one organization.

Sooo... The one organization with viable statistics regarding grant money expenditures for low income women to get breast exams and clinical referrals i.e. Planned Parenthood, is about to be cut off.. Looks good for your legacy Nancy. Way to go ! I am MORE impressed with PP operations than SGK's. Where did the rest of the SGK 1.9 billion go, I wonder? Specifics please: research? what kind of research? Marketing research ...clinical research?

It will be interesting to see if the movie #pinkribbonsinc makes it to Dallas theaters (ever).

Now that I know SGK is in bed with the abortion industry it will be difficult for me to contribute any longer. Many supporters will feel the same.

Highly intelligent decision.  Take one aspect of what an organization does and use that tiny brush to paint with wide swaths of tar.  By that logic, one shouldn't tithe at church, because the Church of Rome uses part of that tithe money to pay legal fees to keep child molesters out of jail;  one shouldn't donate to UNICEF because food aid depresses the price of staple crops in other poor countries; one shouldn't donate to Habitat for Humanity because new houses and new development creates jobs and economic stimulus....

A lot of people seem to look for reasons NOT to donate of themselves to various causes, and are quite vocal about those reasons.  A far better thing to be vocal about would be your reasons FOR giving to a particular charity.  Ya know, focus on something positive.

Planned Parenthood should start their own charity work for breast cancel and abortion with private donation this way the pro lifers who are trying all that they can to destroy them will not have the ability to do so.  Komen Foundation was wrong and to me that was a week apology and to think that everybody will except such is just plan old dumb.  Women and men who believes in Planned Parenthood give your donations directly to the Planned Parenthood.  Let Komen die the death I think they deserves.  To act with out proof was a dumb and stupid thing to do.  Just because an organization or person is being investigated by the Congress or Law In Enforcement does not mean one is guilty of the charges.

As another poster has already pointed out, Parkland apparently receives money from Komen... and they really ARE under a very serious federal investigation.  Yet there wasn't any talk of suspending grants to them.

This whole thing smacks of a cover up.

They also contribute to religiously affiliated charities. If we all had to agree on how every ya dollar is spent, we'd never spend a dime. And yes, I know that there are some people who think that is the optimal situation.

Since the decision (and subsequent reversal) were all attributed exclusively to the Board, I decided to look at the Board composition:  http://ww5.komen.org/AboutUs/B...

Really quite fascinating-- the Board appears to be controlled by Brinker, her son and a handful of Dallas civic leaders (Linda Custard, Connie O'Neill).  This goes a long way to explaining how they could have done such a bad job of understanding the blow back from their decision.

Mostly a bunch of Dallas area socialites, you say?

No wonder there's no empathy from this group, there's probably not an authentic breast amongst them.

The decision to create a rule that would cut funding to Planned Parenthood, according to these sources, was driven by the organization's new senior vice-president for public policy, Karen Handel, a former gubernatorial candidate from Georgia who is staunchly anti-abortion and who has said that since she is "pro-life, I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood."

Great POWER position to be in Until dot dot dot

Soooooo Is Karen packing up her office today ?

"The decision to create a rule that would cut funding to Planned Parenthood, according to these sources, was driven by the organization's new senior vice-president for public policy, Karen Handel,"

Somehow I don't think this is the kind of public policy Attention the Koman Folks were expecting."Cynical laugh here" .

Nothing's changed. They were saying this same thing yesterday. They will continue to fund the current grants, but won't renew them in the future. Still, no pink ribbons for me any more. Heart disease kills more women than all cancers COMBINED. I think the AHA will get my Komen money now.

I think what needs to be repeated over and over, in every blog post and every article, is that SGK actually donates only 20% of total revenue. The rest apparently goes to exhorbitant salaries and marketing costs.

And already-millionaire Nancy Brinker receives a salary of nearly half a million dollars a year, plus expenses.

Whether or not you agree or disagree with their politics, every person thinking of donating or participating in an event should care about where their money goes.

Can you provide a link to this information?

According to Komen:

Administration - 12%Fundraising - 8%Treatment - 7%Screening - 15%Research - 24%Education - 34%

Planned Parenthood is a billion-dollar corporation which receives about a third of its revenue from taxpayer contributions, the President of PP makes about 400K/year, but figures on the percentage which goes to "donations" are not easy to find.

"The rest apparently goes to exhorbitant salaries and marketing costs."

Nope, what Al and anon said.

guest

Actually it is just the opposite - about 20% for fundraising and administration costs, the rest into research, education, screening et cetera.  For PP I believe it's 15-16%.

It's fine to hate on Komen, but at least get your facts straight.

jfpo
jfpo

Nope. By their own admission, contributions for research dropped from 29% to 21% last year. Other watch groups rate that percentage much lower.

Schutze had this yesterday.

Right but the rest is not spent on marketing. They sponsor other things besides research. Their ratio of money spent on administration and marketing is in line with planned parenthood. Don't trust a reporter. Go to their financial statements yourself.

Montemalone

My guess is Komen was gonna lose 10 times as much as they were giving to PP, and decided to rethink things when it meant less cash for them.

Marie Russell-Barker

As far as I am concern they still may, nobody can trust them now?  Would you after that stunt that they just pulled totally political and none basically.

Anon

the damage is done. it's already tarnished their brand considerably. they've been revealed as the opportunists they are. should people have known that a long time ago? yes. the reality is that if you donate money to a charity everyone has heard of, they probably spend more money than you'd care to imagine on marketing their brand. if it was cheap to achieve near universal brand recognition, then it wouldn't be so hard to break into the consumer products space (among others). that's just reality.

Is this the part of the show where PP and Komen sit on the couch with Any Cohen and say something like, " You really have been a good friend, I'm sorry we fought like this, I really love you "  while dabbing the tear drops from their eyes and then hugging?

Marie Russell-Barker

I am afraid not, Komen have gone way be yon repair of friendship!  Oh they will be cordially towards each other but the trust is gone.  Betrayal is never one of the things that are easy to forgive.

I've never been a big fan of Komen.  I've often lamented it's bastardization of products with pink everywhere.  I've often questioned where it's funds were going. However, it's extremely hypocritical for people to want more awareness for their affliction and to be treated like "normal people", and to have encouragement and hope...  Then to turn around and say it's exploited and that they aren't just normal people, they have cancer and the positive message is evil because it gives false hopes!  What a bunch of brats. Komen may be off but the people who exploited it and turned it to a cartoon are the people who actually bought the pink toasters and bought into running around in tutus as a means of disease prevention in the first place.

MushMouth1
MushMouth1

In other words they will restore funding until the current s***storm blows over then deny funding when the media is distracted by something else.

Dishonest and cynical. Why any individual or company would give these people another nickel is beyond me. They have shown their true colors.

Too little, too late. No more pink. There are other breast-cancer donation and treatment nonprofits who don't feel the need to corporatize the boobies. And other cancers, by the by (think colon), that need dollar-love, too. I only regret that I can't get my Susan G. Komen donations back, now. Asshats.

Gotta love Nancy Brinker taking it on her pulled-back chin, there's something so poetic about it when it comes to how this organization has been turned into a billion dollar farce in her sisters memory. What little respect I had for Nancy went out the window this week..Here's hoping Komen collapses into itself..
