Along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard This Morning, a Parade ... and a Protest

The Skyline High School marching band, a fixture at the annual Martin Luther King Day Parade
I was out wandering around not far from my house this morning when I was lucky enough to catch a bit of the annual Elite News-sponsored Martin Luther King Day Parade. Hundreds of people turned out to watch, lining the former Forest Avenue for at least a mile. The marchers included the mayor (trailing a tiny retinue of city council members, and walking so fast I couldn't get a good shot of him), the Black Police Association, the Skyline High School Marching Band and even Green Lantern and Captain America. (The comic-book nerd who edits this blog helpfully informs me they were more likely John Stewart and Isaiah Bradley, facts I plan to make fun of him for knowing some time in the near future.) Former Mayor Dwaine Caraway was also out, marching with his wife's campaign team and taking time out to effusively hug just about everybody he saw.

I also spied that protest at the Diamond Shamrock Jim's been covering. There were several dozen protesters out there today, among them the Reverends Peter Johnson and Ronald Wright.

ShamrockProtest.jpg
The Shamrock was once again greeted by protestors, more this morning than in days past
The protesters chanted, "No justice, no peace!" and carried signs that read, variously, "What Would Martin Do? Protest!," "Discriminates Against Women. Boycott!" and "Killed A Man For Stealing." The protesters allege that the store owner shot and killed a man who had shoplifted either potato chips or a small amount of money. But the store owner vehemently denies that, telling The Dallas Weekly last week "that was an outside robbery, I had nothing to do with it."

The boycotters also handed out orange flyers detailing the Shamrock owner's alleged crimes: "Inflated Gas Prices, $10.00 Minimum Debit Card Policy, Killed A Black Man Over a Few $$$, Over 200 Police Service Calls, Gun Carrying Store Clerk, Slave Labor, Disrespects Black Women." (There's much more about the protest on their Facebook page.) In the hour or so I stood alongside them, not a single person entered the store.

No wonder decent businesses (Walmart, Dillard's, Albertsons, etc.) won't move to south Dallas.  Red Bird Mall closed because of the thugs and drugs.  If the reverends really wanted to clean up the area, they wouldn't waste their time with bullhorns and racist comments.  They would gather up their congregations and go through the neighborhoods ferreting out the scum.  If you have hundreds of people who would turn out every day to do this, they could clean things up.

Nothing like ignorance and racism in the black community ----I thought it was strictly for whites?

Look at the sign the man in the suit is holding: "U.S. is our home." Really? He is an American, too. So, if the man is not black, it is okay to stereotype? Even if he wasn't, he was brave enough to open a business in a very dangerous intersection. I used to use that very station back in 1999-2000, on my way to teach at Roosevelt. If it wasn't homeless hitting me up for change, drunks asking for a beer or the Nation of Islam saying any kind of shit to me, it must have been raining. ( I learned how to get some modicum of respect fro the N of I, in that, when I would buy their newspaper, I would engage them in short conversations. I think I scared them more after a while.)

Apparently, it was owned by someone else then, but the store clerks were always cool.

So, go ahead, drive him away. Who is going to take his spot? And as for the sign about the "N" word, it is wrong no matter who says it, so teach the kids, too, okay?

are the 200 police service calls for what the store owner did? or are they for what the people in the area did?

In armed robberies where store owners have been shot and killed over a less amount of money, how are they to know what will happen? Can you blame someone for trying to protect their business and life?

james

some scumbags came to rob some friends of mine once. their intent was to kill them first and then take what they wanted. my friend saved his own life and that of his teenage son by fighting back, with a .38 revolver after being shot 5 times. dpd never caught the scumbags.

I do believe that the gas station may be violataing his contract with whoever he runs his debit cards through.  I believe there is a law that states if they accept a credit/debit card, they are not supposed to be able enforce a minimum purchase price.

in a city where the police won't respond to shoplifting for less than $50...a city with recently shown video footage of a mob stealing all they pleased  in a convenience store...do you blame anyone for protecting their property? i don't advocate putting a dollar amount on the value of a human life. when people steal and become common scumbag criminals they have devalue and dehumanised  themselves, especially in the eyes of their victims. i will  not kill simjply for money. on the other hand. to protect myself, my family, my property, or my livelihood i very well might. and if you do and i'm on your jury, you don't need to worry.

Hey James.  I can put a dollar amount on a human life.  Whatever the value is of what they just took from me - candy bar or credit card, BANG, that SOB is dead!  And btw, race doesn't matter.

like i said...if you shoot a  scumbag for stealing from you, and i'm on your jury...please don't worry. and i won't care if it was a candy bar or a credit card.

So protesters at the parade protested the gas station because the owner "killed a man over a few dollars?"

It's a shame that the MLK parade will now be sued for defamation.  That's a ridiculously untrue statement that will hurt this man's business.  Who opens up a gas station on MLK Blvd that hates black people?  That doesn't even make sense.

Urbandweller203

MOST foreigners who open gas stations and chicken fried rice joints in black, low income communities don't  like the community. Don't understand why people patronize them. This guy shot  a robber a few years ago if I'm not mistaken. This incident started a few months ago when he dashed water on a black female customer.  If you drive by this place when the protesters are not there, people are still patroning this business. This boycott stuff  is old and played out. I can think of 101 things black folk can be doing in South Dallas to better the community.....starting at City Hall. The only difference at city hall as it relates to South Dallas is that they haven't used a physical weapon. Better yet, boycott the representatives for this area.

A poor immigrant who has no better options?

Operating a convenience store certainly doesn't automatically preclude one from disliking blacks.

Jim Bob Guthrie
Jim Bob Guthrie

Well, yeah, but that wasn't my argument.  Instead, I contend that a guy who owns and operates a gas station on Martin Luther King Blvd reasonably believes there will be more blacks in his store than whites. So why would somebody who hates black people seek them out as customers? It just doesn't make sense.

More than likely, the owner said some rude things to some rude customers.  An entrepreneur is not going to attack his customers.  If he didn't want to have black customers, he sure chose a strange place for a business.

The protests against him appear to be rooted in racial bigotry.  They imply that if you're not black, you're not a part of "the community." Imagine white people protesting a black business.  There were pictures of that too.  Those protesters wore white sheets.  These protesters clearly learned more from the Klans' tactics than Martin Luther King's.

Walking with the female Robin? At a guess, she's one of Tony Stark's backup dancers as seen in Iron Man 2. There have been a few women cosplaying that way at the recent Dallas Comic Cons. (Did you see that Ben has added Val Kilmer to the May lineup to go along with Adam West, Burt Ward, and Kevin Conroy? Should be fun.)

The one on the left is Robin, I see the little "R" in the circle.  No orange tights but, we'll forgive, it's not *that* warm today.

Not sure who the hottie in red is supposed to be.
