Wiping the Sheen off Conservative Rich Guys' Morality

Today, a commenter on a previous blog item of mine about GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain suggested it was mighty mysterious that President Obama doesn't have any sexual peccadilloes in his closet when so many Republican presidential contenders seem to.

"Joshua," the commenter, suggested the "Chicago mob of politicos" probably seized control of Obama early on and more or less emasculated him in order to keep him clean for their purposes -- a Manchurian Goody Two-Shoes.

I offered Joshua an offhand response, which was that the serial psychodramas we are witnessing in the Republican presidential campaign more or less mirror similar psychodramas I have seen all my life in my own social circles. My hippie-liberal friends tend to be the ones with the boring but very stable private lives -- marriage, kids, the idea that putting a lot of different vegetables into a blender so you can drink them is exciting.

It's the conservative Christian-right Republicans who have the flamboyant private lives: too many divorces, pills, sleeping with sisters-in-law, booze, child-abandonment. I have always had these very mixed feelings about them, half disdain and half envy. It's a calamitous picture, but it also looks much more exciting than blenders.

After I wrote my obnoxious response, it occurred to me to wonder what the truth is. Not that we'll ever know with certainty, but an intriguing theory is offered by a law professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, who has studied this very question. In her book, Red Families v. Blue Families, June Carbone argues that liberals and particularly Democrats are more family-centric and stable in their private lives than conservatives and particularly Republicans. She bases her case on statistics from staunch red-voting states versus staunch Democratic states.

charlie-sheen7.jpg
The masculine ideal for GOP conservatives.
The lowest divorce rate in the country, for example, is in gay-marriage-allowing, healthcare-mandating, egg-heady Massachusetts. Generally it's the solidly Democrat-voting states where there is less divorce, child pregnancy, child abandonment and other conditions symptomatic of crappy morals. It's the red states where people's morals tend to be more reminiscent of the colony cage at the SPCA.

Carbone, in an interview last year on NPR, said she thought the difference had everything to do with premarital sex and the age at which people get married. People in red states who think premarital sex is bad get married early so they can have sex. Then they have bad marriages, because they're too young, immature and economically unstable.

People in blue states allow themselves to have sex before marriage so they can postpone marriage until they are grown up and have reliable incomes.

Hmm. Could be.

I'm delighted to see that someone who has taken a rigorous look at the numbers came up with a theory that backed my hunch, but I'm not sure I agree about the cause.

The thing I notice about rich Republican conservatives is that, even though they tend to rail against Hollywood, they are much bigger fan-slaves to it than liberals, maybe because liberals read books and newspapers. Whatever the reason, I think people on the money-make in our society, whose dreams of happiness are dreams of wealth, just admire and envy the shit out of Charlie Sheen.

He's their champion -- a guy who may be stoned crazy, unable to function as a human being let alone utter a coherent sentence, but by God he's so rich he can get away with it. Plus he gets to be on television all the time. That's like Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich and Michelle Bachmann all rolled into one utterly terrifying androgynous exemplar of the Republican conservative ideal.

You know, I admitted I sometimes feel a pinch of disdain mixed with a dash of envy when I look on these people at play. Maybe the difference is that they just don't have the disdain.

Speaking of the religious right-winged weirdos, the other night I went to our favorite mexican restaurant in Richardson and there was a "Jesus Can Save You" ad that someone put in front of your paper in the glass partition, on the door of the newspaper box. I had a good laugh and I now wish I would've taken a picture.

No surprise here. As Flannery O'Connor put it: The South isn't Christ-centered; just Christ-haunted.

Studies of habits of citizens of red vs. blue states do not relate to political figures (although the louder one extolls his/her religious purity the more I suspect him/her); Politicos are different from you and me. The ever-increasing numbers of lower-middle to lower class citizenry do not move in the same circles of money, privilege, and power of the elected and contenders.

Politicians (and rock stars and TV preachers) inspire power brokers to corrupt them, and adulating hangers-on to seduce them; when money, power, and sex are thrown at you it is difficult to keep on ducking, I presume. Cain stepped on his own dick, but about equal numbers of Dems and Reps have done the same thing, with numerous examples on both sides of over-heated frat-boy self indulgence. For example, the seemingly "pious" state of Boston, to which you referred, gave us both Ted and John Kennedy; noted panty pursuers.

We might even be inclined to overlook such juvenile behavior, except it betrays basic moral turpitude, which makes us suspect more important lapses in judgment in favor of personal gain. Additionally, illicit sex seems to be the most common basis of business and political intrigue and spy-turning. These factors make the exposure of people like Cain, Edwards, Schwarzenegger, Weiner, ad nauseam, essential. God told me to write this, by the way.

Jim!  We all think things like this in the privacy of our homes but you published it.  It reads as bad as the right attacking the left.

One side says "We are good and walk in the light". The other side calls BS and admits that it is in fact themeselves that are the enightened ones.

For anyone who buys any human being's sanctimonious claim of a moral high ground politically, spiritually or economically:  Scratch an altruist and watch a hypocrit bleed.

Another analogous anecdote is the knocked up girlfriend. "Pro-Life" red staters are more likely to "do the right thing" and consecrate an adolescent fling and pregnancy with an ill-advised marriage. Resulting in divorce, single motherhood and the attendant burdens that leave so many behind the 8 ball. Add to that poorly funded social services, unsubsidized education and few avenues for real advancement or opportunity. It all adds up to a Randian paradise, the venerable feudal system, a modern serfdom. Hell, even Hayek believed in socialized medicine.

Just got back from my annual visit with my sister in rural Southern Oregon.  She lives in a 43 yr old hippie community.  When I'm talking with no government, free market acquaintances I point out that what they espouse resembles the hippies rather than the Dallas suburbs.  They have their own schools, police themselves and take care of their own needs within their community.  Their kids are all successful, they eat well and live in gorgeous surroundings, although none of them have much money. Their families are stable and they pretty much mind their own business.  I live in the Dallas suburbs where it's non stop drama because people are constantly telling other people what they ought to be doing and getting really pissed off when other people tell them what they ought to be doing.  As for causation, maybe it's the weird density of the suburbs.  Personally, I blame it on too much time in the car commuting.  Of course you can't leave out the one overriding issue that effects every major decision of suburbanites:  "will this affect my property value?"

Conservative Christians should should carefully read Romans 6-8  where Saint Paul talks about how to live as a Christian--not as a legalist, as that only produces more bad behavior, but as a humble, grateful, forgiven human that relates to God as a person, not a set of rules.

I think if you get any group of middle-aged men together, you're going to have some sexual harrassers and serial divorcers in the group. I think my Thanksgiving family get-together averaged as many cheaters and whatnot as the Republican presidential field. My own father is twice divorced and his third wife isn't exactly fond of him right now, either (or currently sharing the same house with him, for that matter), and he, as far as I know, isn't currently running for president.

But by the same token, just because Cain and Gingrich have their sexual/marriage things going on doesn't mean that the whole group of them is up to no good (sexually speaking anyway). I haven't heard anything about that Romney guy cheating on his Sister Wives or whatever it is he has going on.

Really, when I was growing up, it was the Gary Harts of the world out there sexing everybody up. Granted, Reagan was long-ago divorced by the time he became a conservative icon, but nobody questioned his loyalty to and love for Nancy. Sure, maybe one of those Rockefeller Republicans would bang an aide or two (specifically the one named Rockefeller), but those guys were practically Democrats anyway.

And really, we knew Clinton was a horn dog before we elected him, but it didn't matter even though he was running against a guy who (aside from some rumors) wasn't a known cheater even though his wife looked like George Washington's uglier brother.

Maybe the cheating stuff only grates when the cheater is out there talking about how important family values are and how the gays are trying to ruin marriage for everybody by wanting to be married.

Boy Jim you must be bored. Most of the libs in Mass are trustfunders like John Kerry whose trust is in excess of 200 mil. Mass also has the distinction of electing the first openly faggot Rep, one Gerry Studds and then there's Barney "the Fag" Frank. It's also home to Harvard, which in the last 50 years ain't produced much cept for ineptocrats to populate the ineptocracy.

I think the answer is very simple, conservatives by their definition put themselves in to unreasonable and impossibly rigid bounds in what is by it's definition a progressive society.

People are outraged by hypocrisy, Clinton's affair was none of our business because DOMA aside he never pretended that anyone's marriage was anyone's business. For all we know and what I personally suspect the Clinton's had an an "understanding". Newt on the other hand made a huge deal over his self-professed superior morality and was really being even worse in his behavior by anyone's ethical standards.

You offer a valid perspective. On the other hand, political persuasion reflects values, values have consequnces, life is not entirely relative, and liberals need to kick some ass for a change.

Yes, abortion is thhe annswer. Kill 'em all; but use socialiized medicine to do it. there are millions of families who started young and are still going strong and taking care of their folks. Ill-advised marriage! There would be millions more but they were murdered.

I think your last statement speaks to the point best.  It's plain that there are dalliances, unethical behavior, and sexual infidelity on both sides of the aisle.  People in power tend to abuse that power.  However, it makes a much stronger impact when the person who is caught in such behavior makes it a point to be frothingly opposed to such things in public prior to the revelations.  Nobody ever questioned Bill Clinton's commitment to "Family values", because that wasn't a plank in his platform.

Clinton's affairs were none of our business? He was accused of rape and exposing himself and several other very aggressive sexual adventures if not crimes. Yes, I was outraged and sickened at his using my Oval Office as a playpen with Monica, her knee pads and his cigar.

The man lied under oath while POTUS. That has been proven and his law license was suspended as a result. We know why Clnton's law license was suspended but why did both the Obamas suspend their license?

His perspective is totally invalid JS.  The media dig up the dirt where they can gain the most money from its use, this one being a perfect example.  How many personal ads are in this paper? If political persuasion reflects values, the current state of our economic and societal fabric should speak volumes about liberals kicking ass.  Unfortunately, it's kicking America's ass all the way down the road. You probably agree with the Occupy Idiots too!  Merry Christmas fool.

Bmarvel

Political persuasion does reflect values. But values are rarely thought out. They are the product of upbringing and conditioning, of temperament, of obscure emotional factors, gut reactions to events in our lives. This is a shaky framework on which to build a reasonable  or just political philosophy. For centuries the United States was in the grip of a political system that enslaved a considerable portion of the population on the basis of their usefulness to the economic well-being of the enslavers, and distaste for the color of their skin. Having values does not exempt one from the moral obligation to think through those values. How many self-styled Liberals or Conservatives do you imagine ever subject their values to a searching examination? The fact that each persuasion imagines that its values are the product of thought and thus the only possible correct values suggests otherwise. This by itself, I think, accounts for the differing positions of the Left and Right on a range of issues from the family and marital fidelity (and abortion, for that matter) to treatment of the poor, justice, and the legitimacy of wars.

It makes you anachronistic.  Race is a debatable concept, for there is no clear divide to separate them.  Ethiopians are Caucasian as are North Africans generally, they have more color to their skin, curly hair and, North Africans, unlike Ethiopians have larger, broader noses generally.  So really, your use of that word is anachronistic, and that is what is impression I get from your use of it.

I agree that epithets are not the boogie man people make them out to be.  I grew up with a father that grew up in the 50's.  I don't believe him to be racist.  However, if you cut him off in traffic, he'd hurl colorful epithets for those riding with him to hear.  I hear "pepper belly and spear chucker and many other "colorful" terms, but perhaps none with as much vitriol as what I remember him frequently growling in Valley View Mall.  Some lady would be waiting for a customer walking back to her car loaded with packages, she'd have the whole lane backed-up for seemingly 5 minutes for a parking spot.  And, with as much contempt as I ever heard issue from him he'd growl, "God-damned North Dallas Housewife."

Epithets are powerful words, their use can be cathartic; they move us.  Though they tend to reveal more about the issuer than the target.  So, their use is quite problematic.

Jack, apppears you are a sheep. My children are/were not bullies. They were taught better. Yes, I use the word Negro in public. Never had a Negro object to it yet.

Of course, I would be concerned if my child were being bullied; however, I think they would handle it themselves as they have been taught to have a backbone.

There will always be bullies. Some bullies wind up in the pen, don't know about fucking sheep. Since you resemble a sheep maybe you would know.

BTW, I stopped several bullies from bullying other people in my life. My son also stopped a couple in his day.One of the kids he helped is his best friend and has beem for 25 years.

It could be 3056 and stilll the way to deal with a bully is put stand up to them.

I think most parents are concerned about the issue. Thankfull; many of us raised men and not pussies or sheep.

I'm sorry, I intended to send that link to Robert, to delete on Friday, and got busy.  I love wide ranging exchange of ideas. Epithets are another matter. I think it's important to make clear they aren't tolerated in our community. Using epithets is an attempt to dehumanize. It's wrong and adds nothing to discussion. Glad you deleted that.

Thankfully it is not 1956.   I think there are more common sense solutions but I doubt it you would agree with any of them as they would require the F word not to be used.  I assume that you use the N word in public places since no ONE will tell you how to use theenglish language.  It boggles my mind that all parents are not concerned about this issue.  It seems like you would be concerned if your child were the bully, or being bullied or watching kids being bullied. This would be distracting from the education they are there for (and taxpayers pay for).   But no, bullies are NOT forever.  Sooner or later they end up in prison or fucking sheep.

You are right Scott...there is no recent epidemic only recent awareness.   It is great that we are talking about it more and more as it is not only a gay & lesbian issue but all kids that look or act a bit different.  My personality wasn't much differrent in high school so I was not the best one to bully.

Come on Jack E. there no recent epidemic.  Gay bashing has been going on for a long time.  There really is a new awareness of this problem that people have finally begun to bristle against.  The anti-bullying campaign is a new force for good and greater tolerance.  The very fact of this conversation is proof of this.
