Says the Citizens Council, "Advantage: Dallas"

Rudy got to this before I could, but no matter: What you see above was made for the Dallas Citizens Council, which had a dinner this week to which I am sure Schutze's invite was lost in the mail. Long story short: Dallas is kickin' ass. We have "attitude." We're "aggressive." We're all about "achievement." Mayor Mike, seen above, now gives you permission to pass out the fist bumps.

At least this video doesn't have a voiceover that makes me want to order an A.1.® Thick & Hearty Burger. And speaking of: On the other side is YouPlusDallas's behind-the-scenes video in which the Commerce Street gang explains those horses in the DCVB's new promo. Aw, illusion shattered.

I like the video and I am proud of Dallas. Plano pussies please go stuff your faces at Olive Garden.

Oh, and since I know that some of them from the City and DCC are going to read the comments here---could you do me and about 65,000 people a favor? Develop the EAST I-30 corridor? Could we have a gas station or a restaurant or a big box store between downtown and Jim Miller Rd? Think about it: You got a bridge to put dirt on before we get a decent grocery store.

It is STILL all about LOOKS, not substance. *face-palm.*

HAHAHAHA even the wolf is white!

Seriously though, what was the point of that presentation?  They kept talking about investing in the future, but what are those investments?  The Arts district? A bunch of artsy performance halls with overlapping functions that are all busting.  What is the investment in 'necessary infrastructure' that was heralded?  The Calatravesty?  How is a fake bridge more necessary than efficient public transportation and streets designed to meet or exceed demand?  We've had one overpass get struck twice in a short period of time by trucks that did not exceed standard height. (reportedly). And the bimbo talking about the schools here? Do her kids go to DISD schools?  Do any of the people featured in the video have children in DISD?  I seriously doubt it.  The citizens council cares not a whit about increasing the effectiveness of DISD schools because they have no stake in it.  They have a stake in construction, investment, and real estate development, all economic sectors with an over reliance on cheap labor.  You need poorly educated workers to make cheap labor sustainable.

John Scovell went to Hillcrest High and also sent his sons there. The mayor's wife went to Woodrow.

Exactly why the last two superintendents had houses in Hillcrest's area... Want to bet where the next one will move to?

Cliffhanger

I doubt it. When somebody who doesn't know my son has to find him, they are routinely told "he's the white kid." They find him every time. (Not complaining, just telling it like it is).

I guess I've got a dumb question....exactly who was this video produced for?  Is this supposed to be some sort of "sell Dallas" video that's shown to outsiders?  Or was it just for showing at the dinner you reference?  Regardless, it never ceases to amaze me the ways some people can come up with for spending money.

The shots of rundown, depressed areas that they show during the "other cities aren't doing what we are" speil are actually shots of South Dallas....

That kind of says it all.

Very interesting video and a sobering reminder of the "tale of two cities"... Dallas through the lens of the rich white philanthropist and the Dallas of the rest of us.

so, videos like that do make me queasy. I guess I don't like pitch/ads.

There is much to celebrate in our city and they didn't really mention any of that. I was at TEDX SMU last week, there was a room full of very creative people. So, what are we excited about? What would be on your video?I was at the Master Naturalist awards Dinner at TRAC last night. The new trail and bridge over the trinity really is fantastic. Had beers at the Meridian last night,. I love Expo Park. The SMU Embry Human Rights program is one of 5 undergrad programs in the nation, and I'm really proud of Rick Halperin for heading that up. Art Con had our best year yet. Ray Wylie plays at the Kessler this Friday night. SMU will offer a master's degree in sustainabilty. To me, this is new Dallas and it's springing up all  over. I didn't even mention Goodfriend Beer, and the renewal in old East Dallas.  I guess what I don't like about this video is this 'It doesn't happen here.' Yeah it does. We're laying off teachers. We're not taking care of parks. We have financial challenges and it does us no good to ignore that.

Okay, I get it. "How Can Dallas Do More:"  Ignore the Southern Sector infastructure and use the tax dollars somewhere else. "Advantage Dallas:" You got it; Walking around money-the only city with Silver Rights. "Sitting Still:" Yes, on the commissioners court for decades.

The only way Dallas can be a first class city is to show diversity and inclusion. This is so typical Dallas 1950's.

JC

This generation of old white power (Dallas Citizens Council) is going to have die off before the next generation comes in to change the lack of inclusion and diversity. Its the only way they know. Rob from the poor minorities, take advantage of the poor minorities................etc.

Are these rich farts so insecure they need a damn video to tell them how wonderful they are? The Emperor has no close, and yes, Herr Fieldmarshal, the RAF has been driven from the skies.

"How does Dallas do it," they ask? Lots of bond money, increasing long-term debt, decreasing infrastructure expenditures, spreading walk-around money and saddling Dallas taxpayers with the long-term maintenance fees for all of these new Highland Park playboys in the Arts District. that's how we do it.

Ah, the Wolf Group. all that was missing was a certain employee V.O.-ing, "you want a piece of this." I miss JAM.

OLMLOGL! This is so freakin' Dallas 1981. In fact, it's VERY reminiscent of the Dallas TV show intro. Wonder why? Except for the Hispanic family of 4 crossing the street for 1 second, they're all old, white, or HP beatch( oh, but she cares for the kids, she really does)

GMAFB. The worst air pollution, people moving OUT in droves, no one moving in, shitty streets,  transit system that is worthless. The city is broke. Oh, but I do love that up light they use on Mayor Mike to remove the bags, wrinkles, and circles. I do want one of those. Now that was worth seeing.

East Dallas is attracting middle and upper-middle class families. Look at the latest school enrollment numbers.

Peasants Council

Regarding people leaving in droves, in fairness, a shit load of apartments in Dallas have been razed, e.g. between Royal and Walnut along 75, north of NW Hwy near Bachman, proposed Lake Highlands Town Center, etc.

cp

And? Is Dallas attracting a middle class the way Plano, Frisco, Duncanville, Cedar Hill are?

cp
cp

Idiot, I live in South Dallas where we lost population numbers to the southern suburbs. News flash: Dallas did NOT grow in the last decade the way it was predicted. We only grew very marginally. You can't blame it on razing apartments, because the middle class families did not move into Dallas.

I like the fact that this feel-good Citizen's Council video is made by the Wolf Group.  Is it in association with Sheep's Clothing Productions?

DISD Teacher

Ahh, the Dallas Citizens Council.

The same wizards behind Hinojosa, the Road to Broad (how much did that cost?) and Dallas Achieves.

"Business = Community, Community = Business"

Schools? Not so much. For that you'll need ATTITUDE and AGGRESSIVE driving skills as you commute from the suburbs.

A person who worked on Mayor Mike's campaign told me they know DISD is killing the city.  They know the corruption and race-based management of DISD drives investment away.

All the videos in the world aren't going to fix that reality.

Diane Birdwell
Diane Birdwell

And yet, they are promoting and working with the very people who pull the strings--and have, for 40 years....

Peasants Council

School districts are a relic of the past. Getting rid of DISD entirely would be the best thing to happen to Dallas.

DISD Teacher

I agree. We need a whole new paradigm when it comes to making sure every child gets an education and Dallas could certainly blaze the trail. The tax money should follow the child, the number of non-teachers the tax dollars can pay for should be limited, and non-teacher salaries should be capped at an amount proportional to teacher salaries.

Not having overwhelming, top-down bureaucracies seems to benefit private schools; let's start with that idea at 3700.

Diane Birdwell
Diane Birdwell

The way a district is run can be determined by its voting base. When less than 3% of your voters turnout, it is an oligarchy. We need to reclaim DISD< not destroy it. You cannot possibly compare public and private--I went to both. Private can screen and limit enrollments, kick out trouble-makers---you and I cannot in DISD.

What is needed is for the public--literally an increase of only 15% in # of voters in the next election to further pull the DISD away from the old-style graft.

He(Mayor Mike) got a lot of practice blowing hot air up folks behinds, when he was running Pizza Hut. I'm sure he had to tell quite a few people, that, "Pizza Hut" pizzas were superior to every other pie out there! Plus, it is odd that this city, in trying to sell it self(image), can't find one other ethnicity(beside caucasian) to speak.

Oh boy are we in trouble.   Here is a group who could not find their arse from a hole in the ground and they are off again with this nonsense.    The horse shoot one mentioned the thousands of dollars (tax dollars?) spent on this.   The main video is another round of the chant that constantly echo’s through city hall ‘It’s not happening here”.   It reminds me of the meetings that the company where I use to work would have-sales people and marketing sitting around the table with ideas that were so out of touch with reality and when they failed the response was: “what happened???? We had all those feel good meetings to egg us on our way!”    Away we go (with tax dollars to fund our nonsense) got to keep spending even though many of these projects do not make sense or are not sustainable.   Oh after all we can hit the public with more taxes so we can feed our egos.

DM
DM

Yeah, we built all these projects that give us no way of recouping our tax dollars. We need to raise taxes again, and keep the black people in south Dallas down, all at the same time.

Yep
Yep

This is a clear sign, the white power base has huge worries and they are leading the sheep to slaughter (tax increases). And the black folk in south dallas are "whats for dinner."

the only shot of south dallas is bishop arts - typical whitey propaganda piece

was there not one black or mexican that they could find for this?

The typical dumb white people are actually you.  I saw plenty of shots of south dallas and they spoke about one... Juanita Craft Center.  You probably don't know because YOU are the one that actually knows nothing about Dallas and probably live in Plano...

citygirl
citygirl

But if the point is to promote Dallas to "outsiders", those outsiders aren't going to know whether it's a shot of South Dallas,  or Oak Cliff,  or who Juanita Craft was.  I agree with JWPForever & Branden Helms.

I was just about to say that video was chock full of rich old white guys, but you kinda beat me to the punch.
