Like His Pastor Friends, Perry Thinks Hanging Gay People is a "Traditional American Value"

Categories: Politics

"Dear Lord, please put your hands on those gay people, and then just, you know, twist at the neck."
Here's the president yesterday, decrying not-minor human-rights violations against gays overseas (from the Washington Times):
"I am deeply concerned by the violence and discrimination targeting [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered] persons around the world -- whether it is passing laws that criminalize LGBT status, beating citizens simply for joining peaceful LGBT pride celebrations, or killing men, women, and children for their perceived sexual orientation," President Obama wrote in a memorandum with his name attached. "Under my Administration, agencies engaged abroad have already begun taking action to promote the fundamental human rights of LGBT persons everywhere."
Here's an example that springs to mind of what he's talking about, from the New York Times in 2009:
One month after the conference, a previously unknown Ugandan politician, who boasts of having evangelical friends in the American government, introduced the Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009, which threatens to hang homosexuals, and, as a result, has put Uganda on a collision course with Western nations.
And here, from ABC News, is the governor of this fine state arguing that what Obama is pledging is a "special right" that should not be bestowed on gay people:

"Just when you thought Barack Obama couldn't get any more out of touch with America's values, AP reports his administration wants to make foreign aid decisions based on gay rights. This administration's war on traditional American values must stop," Perry said in the statement. "Promoting special rights for gays in foreign countries is not in America's interests and not worth a dime of taxpayers' money."

Perry moved beyond the national security implications of the decision and honed in on what he deemed to be an attack on "traditional American values."

"But there is a troubling trend here beyond the national security nonsense inherent in this silly idea," he said. "This is just the most recent example of an administration at war with people of faith in this country. Investing tax dollars promoting a lifestyle many [Americans] of faith find so deeply objectionable is wrong. President Obama has again mistaken America's tolerance for different lifestyles with an endorsement of those lifestyles. I will not make that mistake."

800px-Lou_Engle_the_Call_Nashville.jpg
Lou Engle, seen here in Nashville, traveled to Uganda to promote an anti-gay bill there.
Along with the recent videos posted below -- in which Perry bemoans gays serving in the military and Obama's "war on religion" -- the statement seems to be part of a recent push to deepen his connection with his evangelical base. It's a fitting way to do it, since the most extreme members of that base not only turn a blind eye to human-rights abuses against gays overseas but promote them.

That bill threatening hanging for gay Ugangans? That was promoted in Uganda by pastor Lou Engle, the founder of the The Call. The Call is the sister organization to the International House of Prayer, which helped organize Perry's prayer jam over the summer. And that prayer jam was based on events organized by The Call.

All Perry needs to complete his outfit is a white sheet, a hood and a burning cross. Who is intolerant enough to vote for this poor excuse for a human being?

Gays only response to anyone who has an opinion they don't agree with is too call them gay..and yet they wonder why people don't care when they bullied or killed..

He is in desperation/denial mode at the bottom of the barrel with the other bible wavers.  (Santorum and Bachmann). The media only shines a light on him if he does something stupid, which Perry has in plenty of in reserve.Good spoof The Second City.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbrI3F...

Anti discrimination laws do not protect all people; only those with certain characteristics that they 1) Have on control over (gender, race, age, disabiliity, where they were born) or 2) Are fundamental choices of life (having children, religion).  Since the evidence is now overwhelming that sexual orientation is not a choice, it follows that it should be added to the list of characteristics protected from discrimination; it's not currently in federal law, but some states and local jurisdictions have added it, not Texas of course, but the cities of Austin and Dallas have.

Not a day goes by that I don't get an email from a member of my family (none of which lives in Texas)....with a subject line of "Did you see/hear what HE said THIS TIME!?!"  It's always something about Perry.  I must confess, though, I'm going to miss the comedy when this guy finally has to drag his humiliated arse back to Texas.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, All men are created Equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain Inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."

I hate it when people misrepresent what our 'National Values' are.

In every photo I've ever seen of that phony, he's overpraying.Everyone else is content to bow a head, and/or close the eyes, but not Mr. Hey Look How Spiritual I Am... he has to grit his teeth and squint his eyes with the double hand clasp, always careful to touch the head so everyone can plainly see his steely determination and earnest devotion. What a phony.

What are Perry's American values? Almost fail out of college? A "D" in economics? PLEEEEZE. I guess if you are a gay, illegal alien, you CAN'T have that inschool tuition because it's against HIS faith. His faith is money and power.

Rick Perry being against something thats common sense in the bible (Thou Shalt Not Kill) is nothing new, seeing he allowed an innocent man to death in this state because he "didnt agree with the science". Perry is over on the national stage, he'll be soon tossed aside on the state level as people have begun to wake up and realize he or the republicans dont represent the common man...

Mr.Perry,

I am a Christian and a Lesbian & you my friend, should read Mathew & "Pull the plank from your own eye before pointing out the splinter in mine." I am not ashamed of the way God made me. You Ass-u-me that being born LGBT means you are faithless. Look to your own state. You will see one of, it not the worlds largest LGBT Christian based Churches right in Dallas. We are not any more or less believers than straight people. If you read the Bible the way it is written and not the way you want it to be, you will see that it considers being Homosexual an Abomination. Sounds bad, huh! Well, that is until you start to find the other abominations in the Christian Bible. Just a few examples...

It is an abomination to:...eat shrimp or lobster or crawfish. [Lev. 11:10]

...grow two different plantsin your same garden. [Lev. 19:19] ...wear a cotton-polyesterblend Garment. [Lev. 19:19] ...read your horoscope.[Lev. 19:26]

...consult a psychic. [Lev.19:31]

...cut your hair. [Lev.19:27]

...bear a grudge. [Lev.19:17]

...collect interest on aloan. [Ex. 22:24]

...mistreat a foreigner.[Ex. 22:21, 23:9]

...spread false rumors. [Ex.23:1]  Just to go over a few... you, living in the Great State of Texas, I would guess you have had some of the wonderful Gulf Shrimp or Crawdads. That's equal to being Gay in the Bible. An abomination!Have you ever had a garden that you grew maybe... Tomatoes, Peppers, Cucumbers and such in it? Well, growing more than 1 crop in your garden is equal to being Gay in the Bible. An abomination! How about that t-shirt or dress shirt or suit your wearing? Cotton/Poly Blend, Cotton/Wool blend? Wearing garments of two different fibers is equal to being Gay in the Bible. An abomination!

You really should read the Book as it is written, not as haters want to translate a line here and there for purposes of hate and discrimination. After all, my God is Love. Is yours?

Please don't try to say that if someone is LGBT they automatically are not a Christian with faithful beliefs. Wouldn't that be 'Bearing false witness against your neighbor' if that wasn't true? Now, that is a Sin, it's part of the 10 Commandments.

May God bless you and remove the hate from your heart.CJ

Look, our Guv' is an idiot. No doubt about it. But are you so dense that you can't see what he's saying here? I guess so. I'll 'enlighten' you. He is saying that no one group should be privileged over another. It's about equal rights. So... it should be illegal in every case to discriminate against another, period. The law should protect and apply equally to all. Why should attacking LGBTs be any different from attacking an asian? Furthermore, the obvious (except for you) implication here is that we ought to think about human rights violations vis-a-vis foreign aid in every case, equally. What Obama is doing with statements like this is playing politics, pure and simple. However, I totally agree with him and others that not to include LGBTs with respect to the above is wrong.  Take your ideological knee jerk blinders off and actually think about something.

I think you're wrong on this one Phelps.  This is an example of crappy sensationalist journalism to be sure, but if DO wanted a hit piece they would have gotten someone competent to write it, like Wilonsky or Schutz. To me this is journalistic drivel that just happened to stumble across something worthwhile.  Perry's views (for today anyway, he'll flipflop soon if history is any indicator) border precariously on the brink of delusional schizophrenia.  He is an embarrassment to Texas and would be a disaster for the nation.  I'm a conservative myself, but I'd rather loose my right arm and vote left handed for Obama than put Perry anywhere in DC other than jail or Anacostia Park.

What I learned most from living with an Reform Jewish girl in college was the difference between what the Old Testament 'reads' and what the Old Testament 'says.'

Though Levitican law does read 'abomination', what it says through the context of Hebrew traditions is that it is 'not in accordance with ritual or tradition.'  Most of Hebrew practice is based off of tradition and ritual and is not a condemnation of morality.  This condemnation of homosexuality is from people now adding their own meaning to it.

In reality, the 'man shall not lie with another man' Levitican law should be read through the context of Hebrew understanding and value of reproduction at the time as well.  Semen was thought to be very valuable to the origins of life in that time and any ejaculation that was not inside a woman was thought to be wrong.  This is also evident in Genesis 38, when Onan is slain for pulling out during intercourse and spilling his seed.  Again, their understanding of reproduction was that the man's semen was the only thing necessary and the woman was only the incubator.  This should also help explain the lack of 'woman lying with another woman' within Leviticus 18.

Thus, homosexuality being 'condemned' in the Old Testament is one of the largest modern day misinterpretations of Hebrew scripture.

That is so tough, and sadly I have given it a lot of thought.  Santorum would demand some sort of soilder shower fantasy (it is all he thinks about)  and that is not my thing.  Perry is a power bottom and would need me to top him and I fear his ass is as saggy as his face.  But...I would give anything to get into a hot spanking session with Mitt the Morm and his ultra white ass in those Magic Undies........I also think I could get a good book deal out of it.

If he truly believed that no one group shouldn't be more privileged than another, why wouldn't he support gay marriage? It is considered a hate-crime when someone attacks someone because of their religion, but not when that person is a homosexual. I'd say that the double-standard needs to be addressed.

Emileeteric
Emileeteric

advocating for the rights of gay people internationally isn't a "special" right. it's just a right. we advocated for the rights of Jews during the holocaust. for muslims recently. for russians. for africans. for rwandans. the list goes on. to not help gays in uganda would be suggesting they're "special" because they don't deserve advocacy from the US. think. and then think harder. liberals are sensitive to issues like this because people like, apparently, wouldn't think twice about it.

RTGolden
RTGolden

It is an asinine presumption, the idea that every policy or piece of legislation can be applied equally across the board, no matter how idealistic the concept may be.  In a nation of 300+ million people, or a world with 7+billion, there are going to be instances where a particular condition, circumstance, or prerequisite must be demanded before some form of benefit is made available.  It happens all the time, in both national and global US government policies and laws.  In Uganda, the reasoning for singling out LGBT community for 'special' protection is that, in Uganda, the LGBT community is suffering from 'specific' injustice. Before attempting to remove the splinter of ideological blinders from your neighbors eye, put on the shades of practicality to reduce the glare of altruism in your own eyes.

Randy S
Randy S

Wow. It's hard to believe you were able to write that with a straight face (no pun intended).

What the administration is saying is "We don't think it's okay to kill gay people".

There's nothing about gay marriage, retirement benefits, adoption, or any of those other right wing knee jerk "special rights" benefits.

Perry's response, although not totally unexpected, is kind of shocking. Without understanding any nuances of the situation, he immediately spouts off about what constitutes American values. Apparently he DOES believe it's okay to beat, rape, and kill gays.

Lolotehe
Lolotehe

No one's asking for any special treatment; they're just asking that the special treatment like beatings, imprisonment, bullying, discrimination, and persecution stop.

camarillobrillo

Because the attacks on gay folks happen across the spectrum of color. Blacks beat/kill black gays, whites beat/ kill white gays, asians beat/kill asian gays...it has nothing to do with their color and everything to do with their sexual orientation.

Nah, Jim has already dirtied his hands with two of them, so they have to spread it around now.

Hardly, just mind your own business. If you don't like how another is, when they are not harming anyone, then let it go. I'm not a preacher. I was just pointing out that a comment stating 'all Gay's are faithless' is a complete fallacy. That he could live in a state that has one of the largest LGBT Christian Churches in the World in Dallas and make such a remark, was sheer ignorance. My Biblical points, though many, were to prove that I am knowledgeable in Christianity, far from faithless and an LGBT person.  It was not to ask for some smart ass questions from someone that finds it necessary to lash out at someone that has a stake in the issue.

Oh, I get it, you are one of the people who don't understand the difference between the opinion shows on Fox and the news shows, right?  This is filed under "Politics", not one of the opinion columns, like "Get Off My Lawn".

Now, if you are saying that The Observer is no longer a legitimate news agency, then I don't think you are right yet, but they are working on it.

You do realize the nature of a blog is to editoralize as opposed to report, don't you? I do understand that Fox News viewers have trouble telling the difference. Any decent editorial writer should absolutely skewer Perry for failing to support a simple human rights initiative. Rick Perry is a disgusting human being.
