It's Official: SMU Heads Big East

Speaking of SMU ...

It has officially been invited to join the Big East, and is only too happy to accept. In a conference call with media, commissioner John Marinatto just intro'd the Hilltop to the ranks of the conference, along with the University of Central Florida and the University of Houston, who will be full members. Boise State and San Diego State are joining as football-only members.

Said Marinatto, "The Big East has had a record of reinventing itself," and today's announcement is a "bold and creative step: We are going west." The commissioner insisted all the new members bring "great facilities and engaged fans and an unwavering commitment to athletics," and makes the Big East "the first truly national college football conference" with a "powerful model unmatched" by any other conference.

SMU President R. Gerald Turner was also on the line and called the move out of Conference USA in 2013 and into the Big East "an honor." Said Turner, "The city of Dallas will be delighted to welcome all the Big East members ... and with the University of Houston we can truly say the Big East conference has spread to the state of Texas." It's now time for the Q&A session. Can a question about June Jones be far behind?

Update: Nobody ever asked Turner about Jones and his rescinded offer from ASU, allegedly. All we have, for now, is this, from SMU's official release:
"Our move to the Big East is good for SMU, for Dallas and for this region of the country and reflects the reemergence of our successful football program under the leadership of June Jones," said SMU President R. Gerald Turner. "Coupled with our steady rise academically and athletically, we are in a good position to continue our rise among national universities. On top of that, a grassroots effort of our alumni, elected officials and steadfast supporters coast-to-coast gave us the momentum we needed. We look forward to this new era of competition."

Junebug was headed to ASU or UofAZ?

He was halfway out when he did a UTurn and is again a Pony Proud.

Enter storied state champ Lake Travis prep star Garrett Gilbert who washed out under Mack Brown at UTexas. Jackie Sherrill compared him to Dan Marino back before Mack got ahold of him.

Now Gilbert, whose little brother has scored on 33% his receptions will probably be playing at Cowboy's stadium next week, has decided to cast his remaining eligibility with the 2013 version of the Ponies. So he has one year to further develop out of the spotlight before then.

Does SMU need to start their head coach search now or will Jones stick around for 2013?

A lot of questions remain.

Big East football was pretty mediocre with Pitt, Syracuse, and West Virginia.  Now these 3 schools are leaving.  Remember how UConn was crushed by Oklahoma last year, how very few people watched, and how even OU fans were disinterested?   Inviting these schools is an act of desperation to get enough teams to call itself a football conference.  The Big East may lose its automatic BCS bid in a few years.  The Big East is a good basketball conference trying to remain relevent in football - but is failing.

So, this is pretty much a lateral move, no?

The Big East won't lose it's AQ status unless the conference disappears or no one has AQ status by restructuring the whole system.  As much flack as the Big East receives, in the final BCS rankings, if you calculate the memberships of each conference by average rank... 1) Big 12,  2) SEC,  3) Big Ten,  4) Big East,  5) ACC,  6) Pac 12.   The media likes to pick on the Big East because it lacks a regular Top 20 program, it addresses that with the first round of expansion.  Plus it adds television markets #5, #10, #19, and #28 which make it more relative to television executives.  The Big East has always had the support of advertisers on Madison Ave, now it has the markets to maximize their investments  -- meaning its going nowhere!

For the moment, the Big East has an automatic bid to a BCS bowl, so it's a step up in that regard. But who knows how long that will last.

I know.  It is a small step up.

I was just knocking the Big Easy as an alum of a former member.  I do it every chance I get.
