Hispanics Not Thrilled With Obama, But They Still Won't Vote For Rick Perry, Study Says

barack-obama-latino-votes.jpg
These days it seems as though both political parties are doing everything they can to disenfranchise one of the fastest-growing demographics in the country: Hispanics.

While the GOP ratchets up anti-immigrant rhetoric and champions Arizona-style immigration legislation, the Obama administration racks up record yearly numbers of deportations amid promises for a smarter, more compassionate immigration enforcement policy. Still, they ain't voting Rick Perry, or any other GOP hopeful for that matter, a Pew Research Center poll finds.

Among Latinos surveyed, a Perry-Obama match-up sees the incumbent winning 69 percent to Perry's 23. The numbers for a Romney ticket are almost identical. But before Obama declares the Latino vote in the bag, the study has a few sobering numbers: His job approval rating among Hispanics is 49 percent, down from 58 the year before. Nearly one quarter of all Latinos know someone who has been deported, and more than half of them disapprove of Obama's handling of the issue.

Paradoxically, fewer than half realize that Obama has far outpaced Bush in the number of deportations. Latinos also seem more optimistic about the state of the union in general. While more than three quarters of all adults in this country are dissatisfied this country's direction, only 59 percent of Hispanics share that view.

There are some 22 million Hispanics eligible to vote in next year's election -- the most ever. At the moment, it looks like they're going Democratic, but if the GOP wises up and holsters the xenophobic red meat, and if Perry owns up to and flaunts some of his more sensible, human stances, they could become the key swing demographic.

As a latino their are more than just deportation issues that keep me from voting for any GOP politician. Reason number one, I don't trust anyone who wraps themselves in a flag and claims that their nation is hand picked by a diety to dole out and judge right and wrong using ancient religious texts as a reference. The list goes on....

I don't think white people will even vote for Perry.  At least not the smart ones...

What is about "illegal" immigration that people don't understand?  I'm sure we could just waltz into Mexico with "no papers" no problem. NOT!  Man, just open the borders, that's the ticket.

Actually, I did just that a year ago: Literally walked across the border into Tijuana without challenge. Now getting back into the States...

Republicans have done exactly what Dems did in 2004 with those two screwballs Kerry and Edwards! There was no way in hell those clowns were gonna get elected anymore than these idiots Repubs have rolled out! My frickin God, are these the best we have to offer?! While we're on the subject, that mega-moron Bush said something during his first term about "a focus on english as this country's primary language", yeah right!! I watched more spanish billboards go up while that jerk-wad was in office!! We better wake up people! English is gonna be our second language quicker that you can spit. You can't pick up a frickin box of cereal without the flip side being in spanish. Mexico is a country tattooed along the bottom of our ass thats constantly pumping in thousands, and be honest here [I'm gonna slip my PC gloves off] Mexicans have large families. They start havin kids at a young age, and don't let up till they hit the wheelchair! We gotta get tough people. Yeah, we're gonna have to offend some people, but it's got to be done before it's too late, if it's not already! We are losing the American culture even as I type.

"American culture"? Like Irish immigrants with large families who "start havin kids at a young age, and don't let up till they hit the wheelchair"?

Sadly, and dangerously, you represent the way too many Americans try to rationalize. If you were inteligent enough to see the big picture you would realize other immigrants, such as my ancesters, came over on boats and planes and went thru proper procedures. They were not from countries "tattooed all along our border", and gradually saturating our society. WAKE UP!.....oh, and last time I checked, Irish people actually speak ENGLISH!....or at least Irelandnese.

And that is without them knowing that while Mexicans are getting deported, Obama's relatives are not.

Yeah, like that turdlet of information is going to make them vote for Mittens the Flip-Flopper or Newt Gingrinch!

Doesn't matter.  The reality is, Obama has to keep all the minority turnout he got in 2008, because he's lost the white moderates.  His only chance is heavy turnout from hard corps liberals, African Americans and Hispanics.

So, if the Hispanic vote just doesn't turn out, the Republicans get a slam dunk.  1980 all over again.

You know that feeling in the pit of your stomach?

That's what it felt like on the right in 2007.

Yeah right. Better hope fat Chris Christie rides (or waddles) to your party's rescue,

That's not the equation.  The equation is Barack Obama = Jimmy Carter.

Yeah, keep believing that. Mitt Romney = Ronald Reagan (pre-Alzheimer's). lol

I'm conservative and I won't vote for any of the GOP on the ticket. Just hearing they are affiliated with the Tea Party makes me want to vote Obama. And I didn't vote for him in the prior election.

I noticed in your Discus activity that you keep saying that you are conservative, but say nothing but left-leaning talking points.

You must be a very interesting person.

Maybe Jennifer is an INTELLIGENT conservative,  not a far right nut job like the tea partiers.  The tea party's time in the sun came to an end as soon as people starting listening to the non-realistic shit they were saying and after some of those idiots got elected to public office.  You gotta love how after cowardly bowing down the these idiots, lots of the GOP is trying to distance themselves from them.  And after all the tea party/GOP rhetoric about change, smaller government, end of entiltlements, etc.  the GOP nominee will surely be milk toast, govt insider, bland, flip flopping, business as usual Mitt Romney. You couldn't ask for a more plastic politician.  Is there any futher prove that the tea party "movement" has failed?  Jennifer's one of the smart conservatives that knows it has.

The "electrify the fence and build a moat" nonsense has to stop being an applause line for the GOP candidates to drop this stance entirely. Maybe in 2016.
