Apparently June Jones Is (Update: Not?) Leaving SMU for ASU, Which Is Apparently Great (Update: Awkward!) for SMU

"They wear Hawaiian shirts in Arizona, don't they?"
Update, 3:42 p.m.: This could get awkward. Yahoo! is now reporting that several sources are saying June Jones will not be ASU's next coach, because -- well, basically because of all those Tweets below, or whatever the big-money-booster equivalent of bitching on Twitter is.

Original item: After rescuing the SMU football program from the pits of irrelevance and dragging it onto the shores of semi-relevance -- an act of heroism scheduled to continue with today's expected 4 p.m. move to the Big East -- June Jones looks to be bolting the Park Cities for a place where those Hawaiian shirts won't stick out so much: Arizona State.

Fox Sports reports that Jones pulled his assistants off their recruiting road trips and told them to meet back in Dallas this morning, where he was expected to tell them that he's Tempe-bound. Which, for casual football fans, may seem like a blow to the Ponies, who were just collecting enough momentum to make Boulevarding, if not actually attending the games, a Thing to Do.

But here's the flip side: If you believe SMU's increasing relevance positions them to land another, better coach -- a ladder-climber on his way to BCS, say -- then this might actually be good news for local football fans. Because here's what ASU fans are saying about the prospect of watching a Jones-led Sun Devil team.

Let's be real--you have to moneywhip a coach like June Jones to get him to a private school with an apathetic student base and jaded alumni base smack in the middle of a professional football town where you're surrounded by many times more supporters of the major public universities of two states as well as another private school 30 miles away that's been extremely successful. I hope nobody at SMU gets all arrogant about their school actually being a prized destination if Jones decides to bolt for a bigger program with more funds and better facilities, recruiting base, and national awareness.

The freedom to recruit eligible students.   SMU's snakebitten administration would not allow Jones to recruit students who qualified to go to other schools - - strong academic schools, even - - unless they fit in SMU's over-conservative box. They kind of sprung this on him, and SMU lost several very talented players. I attended SMU during and after the Death Penalty years, so spare me any sanctimonious drivel.

This issue has been completely resolved. SMU now admits every player who would be able to get into schools like those in the Big 12.

Those ASU tweeters are just plain stupid..Jones is bigtime football coach.  SMU won't be able to replace him either.  So Ponies, get ready for the quick trip back to mediocrity.  Garret Gilbert will help you get there.

Why won't SMU be able to replace him? They paid Jones more than the coaches at a lot of way bigger, better programs. If they just offer the same amount ($1.7 million), won't they be able to compete for someone decent?

Honorable Mr. Tone, they money whipped Jones into coming to the Hilltop..but it was a peculiar situation.  Jones wouldn't of left Hawaii if they hadn't cheaped skated him, he was where he wanted to be..had the program kicking ass...big in the community.  They (U of H) went cheaparse on him and SMU came calling, the big name coaches have pretty much all got a spot as of now.  There's still two premier job openings to go (Agg and UCLA) then SMU can choose from what's left, there isn't another June Jones walking through that door.

Why is he going to ASU?  Facilities? Ability to challenge for Natl Title? Hotter Summers than here? Looser Coeds?

I've got two reasons: #1 Moolah, #2 ability to get recruits (really big, strong and fast and maybe not as academically eligible) admitted into school.

On and editorial note, Joe T, could y'all post sporty stuff on both Unfair and Sportatorium?  Seems a shame to have the old barn all spiffed up (midget's name removed) and not effing use it.  Merten's hot stove and this artical would of been nice vittles for our sport zombie souls.

Josh's broken groin - if you cannot find a sports blog that fits your needs, you're not really trying.

Peace.

I call BS on the bodies part of the equation Honorable Mr. Tone, since you have to click on every damn thing y'all put up..to read past the first paragraph..just have the remainder of the "sporty" articles on the Sportatorium.  That way Sport subjects are easily found, in one place..instead of being lost after a half a day of posts about the Trinity river, redistricting news, what/whom JWP is screwing today, Schult's ox goring of the day.

It makes sense to me, that the effing sports section would have sports related content in it.  But, alas,  I'm not in the free paper bidness and y'all are.  I'm just trying to suggest ways to send the average Joe onto an asset that y'all already have..which is completely underutilized.

I agree with Scruff too, there's 25 effing food writers and Big Bob, Merten (free of charge likely) and yourself are the only people in this joint that can write an effing Sporty blurb?  Bet if'n the local sports franchises were giving payola (like it appears most of the single name restaurants (Smoke/Bread/Douche/et al) then we'd get a little more coverage.

Y'all have a great site Joe, have some funny and interested commenters..some great writing..start cross referencing the ding dang sporty articles on the Sportatorium so the can be seen by the masses in a more efficient way.

Hotstove is effing hot this morning, and not a word from our favorite free internet news source.  This is where alot of us, very much, enjoy getting our news stories from.

Apparently we Sportatorium refugees are supporting 5-8 City of Ate writers then and we're doing the community good.

I want a free subscription for our services, dammit! Oh, wait...

Josh: Right now we don't have the bodies to support another blog, and it doesn't make sense to have a blog that only has an occasional story. Blogs are built on consistency and voice, which we have in spades here and don't have either there. So we'll post sports stuff here instead. Sorry -- I know that's not the answer you want to hear, because it means fewer sports stories. And it wasn't fun to just dismantle a community like there was there. But it's a reality of our business right now.

Plus, if we reopened Sportatorium, who would comment on City of Ate?

Except no one outside of the Hilltop gives a shit about SMU football, or any SMU sport for that matter.

There are too many other things to do and too many other alumni of other 'big-time' schools for SMU to pull even halfway respectable numbers for home games.

That might another reason JJ is leaving.

Money? He's going from SMU to ASU for money? You're an idiot. Also, SMU no longer has admittance requirements that are more strict than Texas, A&M, etc. Some of the marginal (academically) recruits he got last year had shockingly bad SAT and GPA.

June was going to be the second highest paid coach in the Big East. Now that BCS money will be coming in, it won't be a problem for the next coach to be the highest paid. Add in Texas recruiting, amazing facilities, and an administration willing to cater to your every whim, and SMU is an extremely attractive job.

ASU fans are going to be very happy this time next year.  Brock Osweiler, at 6'8", just got the best QB coach in the country to lead their team.

SMU deserves to lose Jones.   Neither the students nor the administration were supportive.

uhhh he blamed a particularly badly coached home game on the lights, the next week Ford Stadium has brand new lights. He blamed loss on the turf. The next week, Ford Stadium has new turf. As far as the fan support, I think JJ's outright contempt for the fans, mascot, colors, traditions and history of the school may have something to do with it...

Nor the administration??? What DIDN'T Orsini offer this guy?!

I heard from a friend that works in SMU's Athletic Department, they're dropping names as J. Jones replacement & the name that popped out is BOBBY COLLINS.

Bobby Collins hasn't coached since 1986. I'm pretty sure he's in a retirement home, too.

I'm tellin' ya he would pay the players better than Mack Brown does! And will pay way better than those CULT followers down in College Station!!!!

Those ASU fans just don't like the fact that they are pulling a coach from SMU instead of a big time name like, say, Urban Meyer*.

Someone should remind the ASU fans that they aren't that important in the national scene.

*Quick note: anyone remember who Florida took Meyer from? Yes, you can pull good coaching talent from non-BCS schools.

Bingo. If Florida can go to UTAH for coaching talent, ASU can lower itself to pulling from SMU.

Great point.

I wonder if we're going to promote internally or seek a high profile coach.

Odd, June Jones has coached in more BCS bowl games than ASU has played.

June Jones is climbing the coaching ladder. No surprise there.   He did a decent job while at SMU but if anyone is shocked about him moving to another school, well ... can anyone be shocked about anything that has to do with college athletics any more?
