Joe Arpaio Is Distancing Himself from Rick Perry? Shouldn't It Be the Other Way Around?

In Perry's defense, she does sort of look like a coyote.
This morning's News carries a paywall-less story about yesterday's meeting of the minds between Rick Perry and Phoenix-area sheriff Joe Arpaio. (No wall on an immigration story? Liberal media!) It was the move of a desperate candidate, and it came on the same day Perry forgot both the legal voting age and next year's election date.

If things continue on this trajectory, Perry's December will look something like this:

immigration.jpg
Dec. 1: Campaign stop with a man claiming to be the shadow in the iconic immigration street sign, who tells America that he and his family were actually running back to Mexico.

Dec. 3: Offers to shoot a coyote live on Fox and Friends.

Dec. 3: Forgets what a coyote looks like and shoots that Gretchen lady instead.

Dec. 5: Drops out of the race, citing fatigue and guilt over the Gretchen incident.

Either that or shooting Gretchen will catapult him to the top of the polls. Regardless, yesterday's campaign stop was remarkable.

If anyone should have been distancing himself, it should have been Perry. Arpaio, after all, has spent his career violating the civil rights of his prisoners, many of whom have yet to be convicted when he puts them on chain gangs, roasts them in outdoor prisons, humiliates them in pink underwear, denies them basic health care and, in several cases, kills them.

There's no mention of any of that -- except that always-cute pink underwear -- in the News. But there is mention of Arpaio keeping his distance from Perry:

But even Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio kept his focus on the need for more border security, a view he shares with Perry, while carefully keeping his distance from the part of Perry's record that has given hardliners such fits -- in-state tuition rates for illegal immigrants at state universities.
It's like Hitler distancing himself from Goebbels, only with considerably less hair gel. And it's the latest sign that our governor is losing his grip. He'll be home soon, I'm sure, unless he forgets where he's from and accidentally moves into the governor's mansion in Nevada. A boy can dream.

The New Yorker had a great article in 2009 on Joe Arpaio:

http://www.newyorker.com/repor...

The author just followed him around for a week and recorded Arpaio's daily thoughts on things, letting Arpaio clearly show everyone what an idiot he is.  Kind of like putting Rick Perry on a stage and asking him a few simple questions.

Haven't read this one...but have read over the years the articles in the Observer's sister (or is it brother?) paper in Arizona about Arpaio.  This is one REALLY scary guy...but the thing that never ceases to amaze me, though, is that the voters of that county continue to vote him in....sometimes it's embarrassing to be an American voter.  We have met the enemy, and it is us.

Joe, I was going to ask you to please refrain from posting unless you had something to say.

Then I realized that would be the same as asking you not to post at all.  Since we know there's no hope in hell of that, never mind.

He did have something to say: that Perry approached the loony sheriff because he was getting his ass kicked in the polls for being too soft on immigration. JTone conveniently ignored that point as that inconvenient truth would should how out of line Tone's own slant is with mainstream Americans.

I second the opinion of most regarding Perry and his utter lack of competence.  But I'd also like to bitch about the fucking Godiva ad on this page that keeps popping out and covering up the editorial content, despite my repeatedly refreshing the page.  Thanks for letting me vent.

Use the Adblock Plus plug-in for Firefox, sir.  It improves the surfing experience enormously.

You can configure it to allow certain ads (allowing your favorite web sites to generate revenue) while blocking others (and punishing those who don't play nice) or you can just use pre-configured filters.

I was just reading over on HuffPo that aliens have been visiting earth for 300,000 years to steal our gold. I think we should 24K plate Perry and leave him in a field out there near Alpine with a probe.

Perry is realizing he has no shot to become president, not to mention that he is in danger of being replaced as governor as well, hence why he hasnt resigned his office. He's taking on the crazy wingnut fringe support like Sherrif Joe, as (pun intended)no right-minded person would give their support to a man who cant even confirm that 18 is the legal age to vote in America.

Yep, he has definitely bought the Sarah Palin playbook. Although I don't know if he can comprehend all the words...

Smegma I think is the correct term (spelling may be off).  I will refrain from the definition and give you the joy of finding it in the dictionary.   Anyway my comment on Rick the Prick Perry and Sheriff Joe -birds of a feather flock togeather.

......and stop embarassing the entire state of Texas. I was torn between two issues about his running. Did we want him to run just to get rid of him in Texas? OR Did we need to do our patriotic duty to keep him just in Texas? Turns out that being a major embarassment was the real reason he should not have run.

What we really need to make Texas proud is our very own Michael Dukakis, or Howard Dean, or Al Gore...heck we still got Claytie and his cure for rape....but the Hells Angels miss riding in the wind with Gov Ann......
