Bill Hader as Rick Perry: "I'd Be Such a Good President If There Wasn't Talking Involved"

Pretty lackluster episode of Saturday Night Live last night -- and no, that isn't a cue for you to go on about how the show hasn't been worth watching since (insert whatever era during which you first saw the show). It's been strong lately, a nice mix of "funny ha-ha" and "funny weird," as comedy types say. But last night, with host Charlie Day and musical guest Maroon 5: Meh.

However. After Alec Baldwin turned in a so-so Rick Perry on the season premiere, the gig of lampooning our governor went to Bill Hader last night. His Hammered Rick had me in tears -- both tears of ha-ha and tears of holy-shit-this-guy's-the-governor. Enjoy.

Bill Hader is the funniest actor on SNL in a long time, Seth is great too, but there is no denying that Hader's Stephan is a total riot! I just wish that "he" would be on more often!

for gods sake - he is so fracking (i read you are from near cushing OK, bill) smart - how many people take ambien? and drink beer?  --- more than you think -- as the"party" knows all before it happens, you have endeared future vice president Perry into the hearts of a tier of america those who read the observer don't often consider - so well played mr hader - long live Rick and Charlie Day - the metaphorical writing is on the wall all you have to do is know the code as for stephan comment - you got to pay to play, baby

Bill Hader may be competing his heart out against Kristen Wiig to make self-important self-adoration an entertainment form equal to comedy, but I still think Wiig will beat him hands down.

I'll have to admit it, though, doing Rick Perry as a James Carville-Stefon daisy chain is a twist that shambling sack Baldwin could never hope to pull off.

I forgot that Alec Baldwin did Rick Perry for the debates. It's a shame, I think his character fits the Gov much better. Sleezy fat cat. But since Rick has completely tanked, I figure SNL doesn't want to spend the extra money necessary to get Baldwin.

It Was Funny. Loved the Kardashian Divorce too.

Even when the rest of the show is spotty at best, I can always depend on Weekend Update for a couple of good laughs. "A Closer Look at Europe" was pretty great.

Couldn't agree more -- totally had the same reaction. Plus, it might be the best fake drunk performance I've ever seen.

Wow, that was spot on.  Now we know that there will be someone to do Perry on SNL should he win the election.  The fact that I typed that will keep me up nights.

I had been waitng for the SNL response to Perry's talk and I was not disappointed.

He did channel Stefon when he covered his mouth, didn't he?

I didn't like Alec Balwin's Rick Perry very much. Bill Hader did a much better job.

Agreed. I was thinking about the prime ministers of France and Germany being so perfectly stereotypical earlier today.

my only problem is that I think Perry was actually funnier. It's hard to parody a parody.

Well yeah. He was laughing his ass off!
