Why Robert Jeffress Is Endorsing Rick Perry

First Baptist Dallas's Robert Jeffress is throwing in with Rick Perry, which is hardly a surprise given Jeffress's participation in that meeting with Perry and pastors back in June at James Robison's LIFE Outreach International campus in Euless. (Also: Jeffress would never, ever endorse Mitt Romney. Not ever.) But he made it official this morning with a statement released in advance of Perry's appearance at Tony Perkins and the Family Research Council's annual Values Voter Summit in D.C., where the governor and Observer cover boy will speak in about an hour. Matter of fact, Jeffress will introduce Perry.

Says the release, "Jeffress' introduction will serve as his official endorsement of his fellow Texan, and is a first for the Pastor who has never publicly stood behind any political candidate." To which the pastor adds, in part:
"Replacing Barack Obama is more than a political issue, it is a spiritual issue. ...[And] conservative Christians will have a choice to make. Do we want a candidate who is skilled in rhetoric, or one who is skilled in leadership? Do we want someone who is a conservative out of convenience, or one who is a conservative out of conviction? Do we want a candidate who is a good, moral person, or one who is a born again follower of Jesus Christ? I believe that in Rick Perry we have a candidate who is a proven leader, a true conservative, and a committed follower of Christ."
Read the whole thing here.

Update at 2:45 p.m.: On the other side is the video of Jeffress's introduction of Perry this afternoon.

Update at 5:05 p.m.: Jeffress was on CNN about an hour ago -- and, again, moments ago -- referring, yet again, to Mormonism as "a cult," one among many reasons he can't support Romney. That video also follows.

Who's really a Christian?  Check out Roger Williams on the internet.  He was one of the founders of the Baptist Church, but he left it and became a Seeker.  What's a Seeker?  Someone, through reading the Bible, that has discovered that the Christian Church suffered an apostasy after the death of Christ, and ceased to exist.  Therefore, the Seeker feels a restoration of the Church is needed.  Roger Williams stated that the Christian Church did not exist on earth, and that he was waiting for angels to restore it to earth as originally organized, with apostles, prophets, and priesthood authority.  Remember...this was the founder of the Baptist Church, of which Jeffress is a pastor.  Keep in mind, the Catholic Church did not appear until 300-400 years after Christ, from which come all the Protestant Churches.  Luther himself protested, but never wanted to start another church...the Lutheran Church.  Also, why is it that there are approx. 1600 Protestant Churches in existence when the Bible calls for being One, not 1600.  What is a real Christian?

Who is the true Christian?  Romney or Jeffress?

But in the end, what does it matter?  The real question is....who's the true American and best to lead this country back to greatness and liberty for each of us?  Romney or Perry?

Romney may have some faults, but remember where Perry comes from?  He was a full on Democrat.  Is he just an opportunist seeking his fortune at our expense?

What happens if Herman Cain wins the GOP nomination? Is Jeffress going to give a speech calling black people witches and satanist.Obviously, Jeffress is a media whore and makes controversial comments to get attention. Quit indulging this littlest of men. It would appear from this article the SBC base is eroding and this is a recruiting tool to attract racists and bigots.http://www.usatoday.com/news/religion...

Jeffers is just a little bit more insane than Perry.  His characterization of Rick as "a true conservative Christian" shows how little he knows about the putative icon of his own religion...Jesus was about as far from the contemporary "conservative"  position as he could possibly be.  Bah.

Pastor Jeffress definition of the Mormon Religion if applied to the Catholic or Orthodox Religion ...would also be cults.  Did we all become Roman Catholic when Kennedy was elected...NO.  It's the man not his Religion that counts.  Carter was a devout Christian...what a fiasco that was....Perry has flip flopped on several points already..the press will have a field day if he is nominated.

Would someone please ask Pastor Jeffress where in the Bible does it say the Bible containsthe complete word of God?   If he quotes that " no one is to add to the book", ask if he knows the dates each book in in the Bible was written.  What the Bible is saying is that noone is to  add to the revelation that John gave.   The followers of Christ were called Saintsin the days when Christ was upon the earth and later they were first called Christians, Ibelieve, in Corinth.  A Christian is one who actually follows Christ's teaching, not one whospeaks it.  Most Protestants " confess with their mouths, but their hearts are far from me,"according to the scriptures spoken by the Lord.  The Bible was not in book form when it wasoriginally written.

Perry also will follow one of Evangelical Christianity's tenets of emulating the 'Prince of Peace' by drone bombing the shit out of Muslim civilians

I was at the mall earlier today, and these teens were discussing their future plans, and one young man made the comment that he will not go to church because there is so much hate, power struggles, and mean people in church. It got me to thinking that the way our pastors, and future leaders act, teens will not be interested in church, or maybe voting, because why should they when the pastors and leaders on national tv are slandering, hurting, hating, and being mean and cruel when children are taught to love, care, give, and follow God the way you want. But it seems, now a days even pastors stand in front of their congrgation preaching hate, slander, and saying awful things about other's religion.Sad...so sad for teens who have to hear this kind of message.

Mormonism is a cult as is Catholicism and most Christian denominations and all religions.

http://www.irs.gov/charities/c... very close to the line on this."For example, a minister of a church can attend an event for a particular candidate and express his support of the candidate as long as he does not state or otherwise imply that he is speaking on behalf of his church.  However, if a minister made the same statement at an official church function or in an official church publication, that statement would be prohibited political campaign activity."It's a rotten thing as far as I'm concerned to get into the specific religious beliefs of candidates. I use the same criterion when I pick a contractor, I don't look for a good Christian contractor. I look for a good competent ethical contractor. I do not and never have cared about the religious beliefs of candidates.

So Christians think Mormons are crazy because some dude went up a hill and hallucinated, as opposed to Moses going up a mountain, hallucinating and coming down with some stones? Okay then...

My heart sank when I read the story on CNN and the first sentence had Dallas in it. I'm tired of my city and state being a laughing stock because of these nutjobs.

I know Dr.Criswell is turning in his grave. I listen to Dr Jeffress sometime on TV his bible teaching seems good but some of his thinking is a bit over the top.Calling  a religious group a Cult is  not good  any organized religion could be compared to a cult including his.

I love this!!! Just when it looked like they would shut the heck up and let politics play out, FBC goes all cockamamie once more!!! Yippee!! Come on now, keep doing this about every five weeks, because I would still rather have Obama than ANY Republican right now. ANY. And when Romney IS the nominee, watch Jeffress endorse him anyway.

Please, Rev Jeffress, keep doing God's work: to re-elect a Democrat. You keep on a talkin' from the pulpit. You keep slicin' and dicing the GOP field with your religious measuring stick, okay?

Make sure you start checking on which churches the candidates attend, who their ministers are and how you rate them. Make sure you check into their hearts, too, because you know how men are....

Thank you, Rev, you made my weekend.

Jeffress is correct.  I have studied Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses and more, and compared them to the Bible.  Neither of them are Christian.  If you can't understand Mormonism is a non-Christian cult, it's simply because you have either not studied the Bible or you don't believe the Bible.  Neither have you studied Mormonism.

Have ANY of these patriots ever read Art. 6 of the U. S. Constitution: " . . .  no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."

I guess they read the Constitution the same way they read the Bible, like the lunch line at Luby's Cafeteria--they pick and choose the things they like, and they ignore the things they don't.

Works great at Luby's, but not so much when it comes to Biblical interpretation or Constitutional application.

Anyone know if Jeffress is a part of the Evangelical pastors' group that is going to outwardly challenge the IRS for a showdown in this election cycle by preaching politics and endorsing candidates from the pulpit?  New York Times had a recent article about them.

"It's treason"
"It's treason"

If he wants a leader of christ then he should run a church. Oh he does then he should keep doing that because the pulpit is not a political venue. Ministers shouldn't lie either or judge people based on their made up truths.

Perry by the way doesn't love everybody so how christ-like is that?

First Baptist church is not a barometer of religion let alone politics. Most people outside of Texas don't even know who bobby is. I've lived in dallas 32 years and my girlfriend graduated from the school. I couldn't pick him out of a line-up. I thought it was the mormon guy when I read the title.

Self-righteous is a sin too? turn down the volume on that self love.

According to Jeffress' logic, Obama and Jimmy Carter are preferable to Mitt Romney because they claim to be born again Christians. What an idiot.

If Perry is a "good Christian", then shouldn't he follow at least SOME of the teachings of Christ???? Perry & Jeffress are 2 of the most NON-Christians (or anti-christs) I've ever seen!!!!

"Do we want a candidate who is a good, moral person, or one who is a born again follower of Jesus Christ?"

The last example is both hilarious and revealing because it implies that born-again followers of Jesus Christ are not good, moral people, and that he backs Perry because he's a born-again follower of JC (not good and moral).

As an atheist, this precisely confirms my prejudices.

Didn't realize the Constitution required presidents to be true conservatives or committed followers of Christ. Or that we should elect them on "spiritual issues."

This is why churches need to be taxed when advising people whom to vote for. The only thing that should be happening at the pulpit is preaching, not politicizing.

I agree Orangenblack, that is one of the reasons I chose to be mormon. I went to lots of churches and they all were like that preaching about hate of other religions. The mormon churches don't ever talk bad about other religions, they specifically believe to respect all religions. I really hate bible bashers..which are very prevalent here in Tx. @DrProduct who said the church is a cult and that we don't agree with the bible. Which bible are you reading? There are so many variations that have been changed to fit the group, that we might not agree with your bible. But we do read the King James Version only, as it is the first and most correct version without as much meddling from men. I'd also like to ask if anyone saw the report about who knew the bible the best. It might surprise you to read it was atheists, agnostic, jews/mormons..check it out http://pewforum.org/U-S-Religi...

BTW, I also believe that the Bible and Book of Mormon are agreeable on this topic.  The rest of you, want to know about mormonism?  Ask an LDS member directly or go to their website LDS.com

Christianity has to be the biggest cult the world has ever seen. And most profitable too.

And No Religion Too
And No Religion Too

If one defines a cult as "a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.", then all religions are cults.

We have a secular government. "Followers of Christ" enslaved Africans for several centuries, killed Jews and Muslims during the Crusades and killed each other for centuries in Europe over who loved God better.

To me, as someone who has also studied the Bible, FBC is also not Christian. Bingo, back at you.

Perfectly said. We as a country have been dealing with "born-again followers of Jesus Christ" politicians for 12 years now and it hasn't been pretty.

Your faith also claims that God was once a man...an exhalted   man who has progressed to Godhood with a body of flesh and bones....You claim death and sin came through the fall of Adam and Eve, but their deed was not actually a sin....It was really a blessing because it enabled ban to continue progressing on toward eternal life....There are many Gods...Brig Young....Journal of Discourses....Adam is a God....your Book Of Mormon does not support the Bible as God, Jesus Christ, is the only God...Then there is all that secret stuff that goes on in your temple..
