After Six Months in Iowa, a Sarah Palin Mega-Volunteer Comes Back to North Texas

Michelle McCormick, far right, among the other political newcomers who'd worked for Palin in Ohio
After months of suspense, and after the other Republican hopefuls hired staff, began campaigning and participated in seven debates, Sarah Palin finally announced last week she wouldn't be running for president after all. Upon hearing the news, Michelle McCormick and a few of her friends did what you too would have done if months of work had just gone swishing down the drain. They went to the bar.

McCormick is a 28-year-old oil and gas industry worker who, until last December, had never been involved in politics. But she was one of a small group who began campaigning for Sarah Palin in Iowa in March, part of nationwide, all-volunteer effort called Organize4Palin, which isn't directly affiliated with Palin's official PAC. (Real Clear Politics wrote about their efforts back in July.)

At the time that article came out, McCormick had been campaigning for Palin in Iowa for four months. She told RCP's Scott Conroy that she was spurred to action by Palin responding personally to a letter McCormick wrote to her: "If she was willing to take the time to respond to somebody who is a nobody in Texas, that just shows me what kind of heart she has."

In addition to not being a paid Palin staffer, though, McCormick also isn't an Iowan. She lives in Fort Worth, and had been spending her weekends traveling to the Hawkeye State.

At the end of July, she was granted a leave of absence from her boss to go to Iowa and volunteer full-time. She and Peter Singleton, the state coordinator for Iowa, were "the only out-of-state folks," she said. "It was fun. We kind of stationed ourselves out of a Days Inn in west Des Moines, and we just tried to live as cheaply as possible because we were all doing this on our own money. We would stay sometimes in volunteer's homes all over the state."

But despite being quoted in the RCP article, McCormick wasn't eager to be in the spotlight for most of her time in Iowa, and she has politely declined several interview requests over the last few months. "I don't want to become the story, so to speak, and notwithstanding this interview with a national magazine, I want to try to be as unassuming as possible," she wrote to us in July. "Just being a volunteer."

But in late September, she did tell Unfair Park she thought Palin would still decide to run, and that O4P Iowa, as well as other states, were "still pressing forward with our grassroots ground game." In the process, she went to all kinds of campaign events and met a host of Republican candidates: Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich. "It was neat on a pure nerdy level to get to meet all these people," she said. " And especially going to the straw poll. It's like a political carnival."

McCormick even met her non-candidate of choice a couple times at volunteer-organized events. "She was exactly how she is, whether she was on TV or just with a couple people," McCormick said. "She's an incredibly gracious lady."

But McCormick "figured something was up," she said in an interview last week, after a September 27 interview Palin gave to Greta Van Susteren. "She seemed off her game," McCormick explained. Palin told Van Susteren that she wondered, "Somebody like me -- is a title and a campaign too shackle-y?"

On October 5, Palin announced definitively that she wouldn't run. During an appearance on the Mark Levin show, she said, "Not being a candidate, you are unshackled and able to be even more active," adding, "I look forward to using all the tools at my disposal to get the right people in there who have a servant's heart."

"It seemed she was ready to jump in, but then she did a last-minute [family] poll, and two of the kids gave a no," McCormick said. "She decided to be a mom at that point and not run for it. I really respect that. My God, I bet the full brunt of the nastiness would have fallen on Willow, considering what Bristol when through last year."

Upon hearing the news, McCormick, Singleton and three other O4P folks headed to "a local watering hole" in Des Moines. "We shared a couple drinks," McCormick said, and talked about the "roller-coaster" they've been on for the last six months. "We've had a good time," she added. "Nobody regrets doing this. I know some people wanted to tag us as a Palin fan club, but that's not the objective of this. It was to get people who had never been involved in politics before to go out and engage voters, go to GOP events, talk, and get involved. I hope that doesn't go away."

Last Friday, McCormick began her drive back to Texas. "I know a lot of folks who are supporters who are disappointed and upset," she said in a call from the car. But she and other O4P volunteers have instead chosen to "stay engaged and organize around a different mission." They expect Palin, if she follows what she did in the 2010 elections, will come out with a list of candidates she's supporting. "Organize 4 Palin has developed a little bit of muscle in our respective areas, especially in Iowa," McCormick said. They're planning on using that muscle to campaign for Palin's chosen candidates. "They have no intention of taking their ball and going away," she said.

McCormick was planning a stop in Oklahoma to see her family, she said, and then was headed back to work again."I'm not mad at Governor Palin," she said. "I have always respected her as a person and as a politician." As for herself, she said, "It'll be nice to have some consistency. There were so many highs and lows during all of this. Instead of a roller coaster, it'll be more like a straight road."

At the end of the day, McCormick said, "I don't begrudge her at all. I recognize she decided to be a mom first. ... Any politician, Democrat or Republican, who decides take the right choice over the easy one, I'll always respect."

Sarah Palin says thank you for your support ...all the way to the bank.

No one can say she's stupid. She made a ton of money off of her fools.

I didn't know this many people would admit to admire Sarah Palin....even in Texas....Who would have thunk it this many locals liked her.  I'm just out of the Palin loop although I do admire The Sarah Palin School For Victimization.  It is cute.

Sticking her neck out confronting Obama, 2 books ‘fact-checked’ to the hilt,24,000 emails forced open, and an independently made movie, all show that Sarah Palin is a hard working, capable, incorruptible, servant of the people.

When Palin is making money its grifting and milking, when Obama sells his 2 ghost-written books its an great intellectual feat..

We know, we know, the same rules of evaluation does not apply to a hypocritical left, only to the right side.

Two leaders in my life have inspired me to follow. The first was Ronald Reagan, and the second was Sarah Palin. There has been noone else in-between, and noone else since.

I quess there were lack of communication from either side.her army kept on supporting her after she resigned as governor. they even voted for the gop, given the republic party, in 2010 the  mayority of votes; thus here on hoping she would run for the potus. in the year 2011' her legion'strived along side with her to gave her the upmost support and strengt. in many states, palin, was already set and settled, because her inofficial organizations accross the nation was spun like a spider web palin network; she only had to say the magic words;' i will run'. but she said family decision was the problem; that was ' an excuse politically poor'. during the past weekend when she gave a speech in st. louis and virginia, did her entire family tag along with her ? 'no'. and furthermore sarah's life is build from politics, she has that in her belly. and the most analytically expression she gave me were the wods in virginia; she said: ' reload america'; was this a sign or a signal. and in south korea she aid the usa is due for a female president; thus something is not right here. the only way i quess sarah can be the potus is by engaging the Eisenhouwer rule; by draft. and here she will be the we the people president; here i know she will reconsider. when receives the nominee 'we the people president 2012' . she said : " God, family, and country are important and she will mantain it in that order; she is right. because the voice of we the people is the voice of God'; thus conclusion she will run and is still running never had stopped. like they say in latin; vox populi est vox Dei.she said it would be 'an unconventional race' and the republican party board must has said to her she can help by being on the sideline; but is that she really doing . she is smart. and in the usa the more they hate it is the mor they fear her and like her more. she is by my findings very intelligent.

I think there are at least 3 books fact-checked : G. Dunn's, Bailey's and McGinniss but I am sorry they don't show Ms Palin as a hard working, capable, incorruptible servant of the people . In fact it's EXACTLY just the opposite

Read a Palin book and compare it to an Obama book.

Better yet, scan a page from each and compare which author writes at a 4th grade level and which writes like an educated adult.

Why should we bother answering someone that admits he is a communist? It would be like thinking there was anything of value in listening to a jihadist telling us how peaceful his religion really was..

I think ex-Gov. Palin quit her job because of the ethics investigations that were underway. Had they been taken to the logical conclusion, she would have irrevocably lost her chance at higher office in federal government.

To my knowledge, by quitting, the ethics investigations in Alaska were halted. So abdicating her office and going on a publicity tour has been a very clever strategy. Personally, I think she is waiting around to be named veep.

There were some 27 "ethics" complaints filed against Gov Palin.  Under Alaskan law these are dealt with by the Alaskan Personnel Board, which body gives a final determination.  The members of the Personnel Board were appointed by Palin's predecessor, Frank Murkowski--no friend of Palin.  To cut a long story short Gov Plain was exonerated from blame in all 27 cases without exception.  It is obvious to a blind person that this campaign was highly orchestrated to destroy her by bankrupting her and her family.  It tell you a lot about the political climate of Obama's America--ugly and frightening.  Given the paramount role played by Gov Palin in securing the massive electoral rejection of Obama and his agenda, he must be ruing the day he set his goons on her.

Jim
Jim

Sarah Palin resigned to get the countless attacks against her out of the governor’s office, and the money they cost the state, away from the burden of taxpayers; her entire administration was paralyzed by those frivolous complaints. The frivolous ethics suits in effect crippled the ability of the executive branch to function properly.

She saw that if she stayed on as Governor it would continue to cost the state millions of dollars in wasted time and resources to defend against false and maliciously ethics complaints and doom it to gridlock. The complaints were without merit and took away from the job she wanted to do for Alaskans.

Also as the Palins were a middle-class family and had to pay their own legal fees (which had amassed to over $500,000), the intent of her opponents was to force her family into bankruptcy.

By the way, she had fulfilled all the campaign promises she made, i.e., ethics reform, budget cutting, earmark cutting, getting the natural gas pipeline off high center through an open, transparent, and competitive process!

She promised to keep the frivolous anti-Palin law suits away from the Alaskan people and to be more effective on the stump ( supporting candidates , fundraising, etc)Sarah Palin was truthful on both accounts!

Sarah Palin worked tirelessly to fight Obama's policies and elect conservatives; she basically spearheaded the 2010 victory with her endorsements and rallies all over the country.

Sarah Palin has been vetted, especially in the past 3 years like no one else; she’s probably the cleanest politician out there. After poring over thousands of emails (24,000+ pages of emails) from Palin’s term as governor, the mainstream media has been forced to concede that Palin was a conscientious, transparent, and effective public servant.

fb274
fb274

The ethics complaints ran full course and especially the one signed by 'mickey mouse' and she was not found guilty of any ethics violation.  But the law in Alaska made it necessary for her to be personally responsible for her legal defense.  Making $125,00 annually as governor and having $500,000+ in personal legal fees leads a path to personal bankruptcy if ego were involved.  She resigned to obstruct any additional complaints after 2 years of her resignation.  Yes, the filers of the complaints were hacked because she out-smarted them.  Additionally, it truly hacks them she has been successful and capable of earning a substantial income since that time.  The filers of the complaints could be considered comparable to the nutjobs involved in the obama organized 'occupy wall street' which we now see.

Gov. Palin will not subject herself to be anybody's VP-----again!

NorCon
NorCon

Then your knowledge is poor I am afraid. Ethic violations can be submitted up to 2 years after leaving office. All ethics complaints were finalized and found to be baseless and without merit.

A simple Wikipedia search could have enlightened you.

Ummmm, while I do enjoy the irony of a tax cheat being named Secretary of the Treasury, I think by last count the government had gotten about 40 pieces of silver repaid by the Banksters on that 30 piece loan (principal, interest and stock warrants).  Somewhat better than the return to date from the auto industry.

Yes they were baseless; they all were dismissed by personnel board.Because no guidance was provided in the law, the Palin administration followed historical precedent in travel decisions for the first family, but her opponents were holding her to a higher standard than her predecessors. All of her travel expenses were originally approved by the Department of Administration!!

She followed the appropriate protocol, and she got slammed unfairly with this and held to a new and unestablished standard. Unfortunately the rules for Sarah Palin were not the same as the rules for all of her predecessors.

The Alaska Personnel Board found no wrongdoing, but Sarah Palin agreed to reimburse the state.

Sarah Palin has been exonerated of all wrongdoing in this ethics act complaint. There was no finding of wrongdoing and there was no ethics violation.

That entire campaign of BS lawsuits was meant to do nothing but hamstring the governor's office and bankrupt Sarah Palin.

Anyway, the 24,000 emails detailing almost every aspect of Sarah Palin’s governorship of Alaska paints a picture of her as an efficient, hard-working ,informed and very involved Governor conscientious and an all-around good-natured human being...not exactly what the media had in mind.

Taking money from the State of Alaska and taking OP money, hand over fist - and forced by the lawyers to GIVE IT BACK is not being ethical.

"So paying back her slush fund of $350,000, forking over unpaid tax on thousands and thousands of dollars of claimed "travel" allowances while she stayed home, and giving back $10,000 to the State of Alaska for wrongful claims for her childrens expenses is - what? - BASELESS??"
