Old White People Who Think They Can Just Check Out Should Think Again

So what is all this anger among the old white people really all about? Why are old white people wearing odd costumes and hating the president all the time?

We old white people all know exactly what it is. But nobody will say it out loud. It never comes out in the stories, even though it's right there staring us in the face. When we were young, the world was white. Everybody in the neighborhood was white. Everybody downtown was white. Everybody at church was white. Everybody on television was white except Nat King Cole, and at least he sang white.

Now we look out at the world, and it's different. It's black and brown and foreign and lesbian and Muslim and vegan -- all kinds of weird stuff. So old white people are pissed. They don't want to pay for public school any more if the schools are going to be full of black lesbian Muslim kids. They don't want to pay for healthcare reform if the money's going to take care of brown foreign vegan people.

The old white people want out. They're going to take their ball and go home. They no longer choose to be part of the national fabric.

Only problem with that? Without the national fabric they perish.

I ran across this theme in a story I have been working on about about Governor Rick Perry and the "Texas miracle." It had to be cut for space, so I thought I would inflict it on you here instead.

On the presidential campaign trail, Perry touts the state's strong economy as proof that he knows how to do things. My story, which runs in the newspaper tomorrow, says most of the good things about Texas are things he had little to do with creating. The bad thing is that he's been busy tearing apart many of the good things in the last year.

As usual with a story like this, I got to learn a lot more good stuff than I could squeeze into the allotted space. There was one especially painful cut -- an exchange with Rice University sociology professor Steve Murdock, the former official state demographer of Texas, who argues that Texas is now an important model for what the rest of the country should avoid, not emulate.

By starving public education, older conservative whites will find one day they have cut the ground from beneath themselves, Murdock says. "When you look at trends for 2040, most projections are for somewhere between a quarter and a third of the population of Texas being Anglo or non-Hispanic white," he says. "About 8-10 percent will be African-Americans, somewhere between 52 and 59 percent will be Hispanic and the remainder will be primarily Asian."

tea party01.jpg
Listen, Gramps, just who do you think is going to pay for your Rascal scooter when the time comes?
The problem, he says, is that minorities in general and Hispanics in particular already have alarmingly low records of educational attainment in Texas. "If you look at Hispanics in Texas, 42 percent according to the most recent census data for 2009 have less than a high school level of education."

Minority kids, especially Hispanic kids, he says, need more public education investment and more services, not fewer. Without that extra help, those kids won't finish school, won't be well educated and will not be well employed.

Under Perry, Murdock says, "We basically said to our schools, 'We are going to take $500 to $700 per student per year away from you, and you're going to have to absorb somewhere between 140,000 and 180,000 new students and not get a cent for that."

He says older conservative whites miss an important point in all of this. Perry may call it a Ponzi scheme, but the way Social Security and Medicare actually are supposed to work is for each new generation of young workers to pay for the older retired generation's safety net.

Murdock says there will not be a big enough population of young, private-schooled, well-paid white workers, if that's what the old white people were counting on, to pay for the old white folks' upkeep.

"What people sometimes miss, when they kind of say, 'Well, we don't have to worry about one group of people or the other,' is that an economy and particularly a government run with a pooling of resources.

"My argument is that there are two basic populations in Texas and across the country. There is an aging population, literally off the end of the life cycle, of non-Hispanic whites who aren't going to have a resurgence of growth. They've been below replacement fertility for 30 years.

"They need services like Social Security and Medicare. The other population is a young increasingly minority population. They need educational services. The older people need these younger people to get educated so they can help pay for services. The populations, younger and older, are obviously interdependent."

It's a pretty simple proposition. Old white people need young minority kids to do well and prosper so that they will be able to pay for the old folks' safety net when the old folks need it. Of course, old people can always say, "No, please take away our Social Security, our Medicare and our Medicaid. We want to die outdoors living under bridges."

But if the old white people want to collect Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid, then they need to get busy making sure those minority and immigrant kids get really solid educations and have lots of help going on to college.

When I attended the University of Michigan, it was virtually free -- almost free -- to in-state students. I worked my way through with factory jobs. Last time I checked, in-state tuition and books at Michigan came to about eight grand a semester -- $64K for a bachelor's degree not counting living expenses. Even with a good factory job, I think it takes a very long time to save up $64,000. Of course, you can always mortgage yourself for the money.

The point is, today's old white people benefited from enormous social subsidies in the post-war era, especially in education, or we'd all be in much tougher straits today. By pulling that same rug out from under today's American children, we slit our own throats. On the plus side, maybe this way they won't have to slit our throats for us when they grow up and realize what we did.

Social Security is like every government program. It is not run well. First thing is that Social Security was flawed from the beginning. When Roosevelt designed the program, they were using faulty data. They did not know what life expectancy was. Life expectancy in the 1930's was not even 65. The idea was that most people getting social security was men work in a highly labor intensive job.People could not physically could not work anymore. Most people were farmers or worked in a manufacturing. It was made to give people money for food for a couple of years before they died or would help the family take care of them.  It was never meant to pay benefits for 15 to 20 years. Most people use up all they paid in with in 5 years. It would not have lasted this long had it not been for the baby boomers. There many babies born after world war two. There was a large labor pool from the mid 1960's until today. One problem was they did not have a many childern themselves. There are not as many of my generation (X) to pay for the baby boomers. You can blame past presidents or congress but the biggest problem was the way it was concieved. Al Gore would  about a lock box. There never was a lock box. You pay it in every year and it goes out every year. Right now I am playing for my dad social security, he paid for my grand father's and my grandfather paid for my great grandfather. I am 34 and I know I need to save up for my own retirement. I don't even think about social security when I think about retirement. Roosevelt never thought of retirement as traveling the county in RV or going to Branson MO or traveling on buses to Shreveport. My opinion is that it can only survive as a means program. It could start out not givng benefits to the rich and just make sure that the poorest are covered and what's left is staggered based on income. That may not sound fair but that really the only solution.

I am a "old white person" (56)...sorry but your title should read "old conservatives" and it would be more acurate!

Jim, you are the best. This guy Perry is a low life. It's all about what it for him. He should be put in jail for what he did to the text books in Texas schools.

Are you totally oblivious to the fact that a good number of the minorities (that you say we have to take care of in order to support us old racist white people) are either here illegally, or are so called "anchor babies" who are benefiting from their parent's law-breaking? It is absurd to think that we are going to rely on social security anyway. It is indeed a ponzi scheme, and to read your article, is suggests that we are relying upon this next "diverse" generation to prevent us from eating cat food and freezing to death in the winter. It's just common sense to create a better retirement plan. The only thing is, the former media darling and expander-in-chief has made it increasingly more difficult for people who actually work to save money for retirement. This is the same guy (who I didn't vote for, Jim S.) who believes that everyone should rely on the govenment for sustenance. The same guy who says that the rich need to pitch in and "pay their fair share" We should all be the same, right Jim?

Ok, get ready..will try not to be "preachy" but not sure what Schutze article was all about,  I hope all this talk has not stirred up conflict. We must learn to see ourselves as one small planet and not be so concerned with our nationality, race, or religion. When it comes right down to it we are all human. I understand most people will laugh at the concept of working together to create a true world economy, but I believe our every action has a potential impact on others happiness. Greed in Dallas has caused so much unnecessary suffering to so many.  Ethics are necessary as a means to ensure that we do not harm others. I hope that we can all put our own agendas aside and strive for love, compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness and so on.

It has been said that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. That is not to say a rich man cannot enter heaven  but rather that he must be pentinent.  In the search for truth you may find that some of the beliefs that you hold dear are wrong. Having an open mind is more important than clinging to every one of your beliefs.  Use your intuition and let your conscience be your guide.  The truth can set you free.

Looks like JimS started a convention of Tea Birthers and Dallas Country Club wanna-bes to bitch about how there's no racism in the Tea Party and the White People aren't racist.

Why would anyone think the Tea Party is racist?

It's not like they have racist signs at their rallies,  . . . oops.

It's not like their leadership has made numerous racists public statements,   .  . . oops.

And j.schutzes'  singling out "old white" people is somehow not racist and age discrimination ???? Imagine a conservative saying something similar about "old black" people. What would that be ???? jim s. is so wrong because he clearly sees all of these evil "old white" people as a problem. He and others like him are stereotyping anyone who disagrees with leftist philosophy. If every old white person in America said they hated obama because he was half black, that would be racism. However it is not racist to say you are against high taxes and big gov't. which is all the majority of these evil "old white" people are saying. This constant divisiveness caused by liberals is ugly and dangerous and is the real problem not a bunch of "old white" people that just want something left of their 50 plus years of hard work............

Unfortunately, the average citizen has no idea where their tax dollars are going and who is auditing our government--Deloitte and Touche audits much of our governmment. The government "incentive" programs (which most people have no clue as to what these programs are all about) are stealing money that should go to the "old white people" We have the government and non-profits joined together resulting in no oversight. What has happened to separation of church and state? The faith based grant is alive and well in the "child support incentive programs" Note Dallas based Affiliated Computer Services has a contract with the City of Dallas--the SEC began an investigation of ACS for fraud and misuse of millions of dollars.  See the links below...the government auditor Deloitte and Touch...auditing these funds is like the fox guarding the hen house!! Let's not forget about the JWP investigation in Dallas--supposedly the FBI is looking into theft or bribery concerning programs receiving federal funds and other misdeeds. Way to go, Jim. As Harry Truman might have put it: "I don't give them Hell. I just tell the truth about them and they think it's Hell."

Herman Snerd

Wow Schutze, very insightful.  Yeah, all "old white people" actually forwarded me their meeting notes from last Wednesday's standing-room-only meeting at the IHOP early bird dinner and you're right, they've decided that since they are in control of everything and since they hate all young people (who are by the way all only comprised of african-american, hispanic, asian, etc.) they'd like to no longer sponsor their educations.  Way to paint SEVERAL groups as at the mercy of a group of non-existent boogeymen.

Are you serious?

The gross generalization you've drummed-up serves to stereotype elderly men, women, gay/lesbian, german, polish, irish, italian, french, etc. into "old white people".  For someone who rails against stereotypes of any kind (unless it's convenient to riling-up racially-motivated arguments) you sure made some ridiculous generalizations about a large, diverse, law-abiding, compasionate group of individuals.

I couldn't make out any real "point" to this story because of your heavy-handed attempts to link it to other stereotypical things you clearly hate:  caucasian Americans, conservatives, responsible individuals, republicans, conservatives, tea party members, etc.

What a rambling mess of an "article" that managed to drum-up even more stupid comments from ill-informed, "snarky", pseudo-intellectuals that watch too much of The Daily Show to know what reality is any more.

You'd be surprised how many educated, young, responsible, determined people of all races/ethnicities are tired of people like you who try to pit Americans against each other for the purposes of political discourse/gain.  People are waking-up on all sides to the fact that we're all Americans, in this together, and the usual lines don't matter when citizens of all ages start to see your sort of "editorials" for what they really are: pathetic writings from a no-talent hack "journalist" who is the truly intolerant malcontent among us.

I think education is pretty important. If you don't educate your youth, then other countries will have a more educated workforce. I don't think anyone really wants to have uneducated youth because they are tomorrows workers.

First of all I would point out America spends more per student that any nation except for Switzerland. I would argue that there is more a problem with getting what we are paying for. The teacher Unions have corrupted the system to the point that even the good teachers loose faith and incentive to achieve. Why is there such a fight against using any other standard than seniority for teacher pay, transfers etc? It's not an anger about paying for minorities its about paying more and more and getting less out of the system. The children today that i see in the system are out of control, two days ago there was 4 girls out in the middle of the street ( 6 lane divided) fighting with what i would guess 60-70 spectators yelling and jumping around like a bunch of idiots in front of the high school I attended 20 years ago and live a few blocks from now. What was once a fairly good school that everyone in the neighborhood went to now anyone that can afford it sends their children to private schools and all the taxes that they pay into the system subsidize other people's children.

Grumpy Demo

"First of all I would point out America spends more per student that any nation except for Switzerland."

First of all you're WRONG, at least 10 Western nations spend more than the US per student.

Everything else you wrote was just a wrong.

What is wrong with you?
What is wrong with you?

White people send their kids to private schools to get away from people of color. Many people of color can't afford to go to private school. Hence, segregation happens again. The only thing missing is the separate fountains.

vesey
vesey

You might remember that it was obama that discontinued the school voucher program in Wash D C that has kept the predominantly black school population of DC from going to private schools. He needed to pay back the teacher's unions and he did !! Ask the thousands of black students of DC and their parents how they feel about that gutless move of obama's.

Anonymous

it's much easier to point to the people keeping their children from public school and call them racist than to look at the public school system and admit that it is broken. my wife taught at a private school and most of the kids actually lived in the suburbs. we're talking even kids from Southlake ISD. this is not just a Dallas thing. it is a national problem of resources being funneled into the wrong places in public education. standardized testing, technology upgrades, and needless spending on new schools for kids who can't even read when they graduate high school. the teachers unions can't be the problem because we don't have them in Texas and our education is among the poorest around. we see other countries doing better than us in standardized tests so we conclude the answer to gaining back our ground is to dedicate resources to standardized tests instead of learning.

it may be an income/class issue because private school is becoming cost prohibitive for all but the wealthiest families, but it is not a race thing.

Bob
Bob

This is patently false, and probably racist. Though I've never sent a kid to a private school, I know dozens and dozens who have. They do it for religious reasons, or for the educational benefits. I've never once heard any of them mention anything about trying to stay away from the poor, or some race.

vesey

Child abuse by teachers never happen in public schools ??? You restrict your reading too much............as far as morals go, i'm referring to Biblical morals. Which moral code do you adhere to and who determined it  ???

What is wrong with you?
What is wrong with you?

Why do you think that people who aren't religious have no morals? People who blindly follow religion seem to be the ones who endanger children. See: ESD rape of child by teacher case, pedophile priest cases, numerous others.

vesey
vesey

People of all races and backgrounds go to religious schools. They go for the moral climate, adherence to spiritual beliefs and quality of education. Often today public schools can not provide the kind of safe, moral, quality environment necessary to create a well educated young person. This form of "segregation" is based on a parents desire to protect and nourish their children and avoid the often hostile atmosphere of public schools that punish any kind of non secular/socialist belief or attitude............

Swen Richter
Swen Richter

No I would argue it's to get a better education for their children, private school teachers actually normally make less money than public school teachers, they go there to teach and enjoy smaller class sizes, and fewer discipline cases. It has nothing to do with race, but it's always the first crutch that is pulled out in the argument isn't it?

What is wrong with you?
What is wrong with you?

Just heard a news report about a Dallas area school principal who called a mandatory meeting with the parents of his largely Hispanic students. He wanted to change things. He wants to work with the parents to change what you are talking about. He created a plan, and called the mandatory parent meeting. NOBODY showed up. You can throw all sorts of overtaxed white people's money at this problem, and in the end find out that money will not solve this issue.

Talk with teachers. They will tell you the issue is largely about parents who don't care.

This was the dumbest article I have read in quite a while.  There were black and brown people on TV when us old white people were kids.  Remember from TV?  JJ, Fat Albert (one of my favorite cartoons), the theme song "moving on up", how about Fred Sanford?  I went to school with black kids and brown kids.  Your a race baiting jackass who wants a welfare state enslaving those trying to get ahead.  You want government provided support which is basically a ball and chain on folks with lower incomes - like I was when I was a kid, we were poor, but never took a government dime and I have worked my butt off to get where I am - and I am free, freedom is what the self serving government takes from people.  You folks of color dont buy into this jerks game.  You will notice when the government "helps you" they limit your income and dictate what you can and cant do.  It is hard to do this when you are free and money makes you powerful and free.

You are going way overboard. Nobody is asking for a, "welfare state enslaving those trying to get ahead." This is the problem, people are just looking for a more equitable/fair way of life for all people and you throw out some radical extreme rightwing hand grenade. How about all people just playing on a level playing field? Government should not be too big nor too small. Republicans/Capitalist/Wallstreet have already proven what they will do to America if left to their own devices. They will swindle/leverage every ounce of juice they can just to enrich themselves at the expense of everyone else. Enough of that bullshit. Never again!!!!

Socialism has NEVER worked. EVER.

Let me get this right, Wall Street, large corporations, big business is bad, greedy folks trying to get rich at the expense of the poor? Right? So let me also guess that they don't allow anyone to invest in the stock market except their own elite little group? And your pension isn't in any mutual funds or company stocks? If you think Exxon is making obscene profits, invest in Exxon and get rich.

If you think business owners are making out like bandits, mortgage your home like they did, and start your own company. Send 60+ hours a week building your business. (remember the majority of businesses close within a few years). This is the American dream! Each of us has the opportunity to create wealth for ourselves and others.
