Let's Go to the Tape: From Costas and Deion to Some Kid With a Match, Reactions to Romo

Categories: Media, Sports

Tony Romo isn't solely to blame for the Cowboys' loss to the Lions, described alternately as "epic," "historic" and just plain "embarrassing" (that's from the team's own website). The defense, stout in the first three quarters, surrendered 17 points to Detroit in the final period, including that three-on-one jump ball in the end zone; Jason Garrett called pass when it should have been run, run, run (or just: fall down); and someone needs to teach Felix Jones to count higher than third down.

OK, fine: "One player lost this game." Certainly looked that way during and sounded that way after. On the other side, a video round-up from The Worst Dallas Cowboys Loss in the History of the Dallas Cowboys, including Bob Costas's brief essay before last night's NBC game, Deion Sanders's noisy rant from the NFL Network, Romo's post-game explanation for the three picks, a look at failure in slow motion, the QB's run-in with the owner on the sidelines, and a father and son setting their No. 9 jersey ablaze in the backyard, which seems to be all the rage following a three-INT game.

I agree with Deion's rant. Hey Deion! You're right! We can't trust Romo! . . .Wait, on second thought, I do trust Romo. . .to throw an interception when the game is on the line, and to significantly contribute to the Cowboy's losing an otherwise winnable game.

little late to the party, but ....Romo plays with broken ribs, Deion rides the bench with sore toes.

Deion is a Champion with Multiple rings. Tony barely has won one a playoff game.  Deion also played MLB baseball days before his playoff appearances. . .ROmo was in Mexico with Jessica Simpson days before his. . . Romo's not in the same stadium, league, or planet as Deion!

Would you rather shove a full size football in romo's wife's twat and then sew her gapping gash shut to show him how to protect the ball?Or would you rather angry pirate her in front if him just for fun?

Please, PLEASE cobble together some sort of separate sports blog!  Get these freaks and geeks out of Unfair Park!

How exactly has there been spillover? We've been (mostly) well-behaved here. City of Ate is probably a different story.

So sorry to get in the way of fascinating redistricting posts. And also sorry you were forced to click into this post, I know you had absolutely no choice in the matter.

Nobody forced me into here obviously, I happen to be a huge sports fan.  The reason I completely forgot that Sportatorium existed had more to do with who wrote it than the comments section.   And for the record, I skip the redistricting stories altogether.  But seriously, how is stuff like this contributing to the conversation?  I know it makes 3rd-graders giggle, but I doubt if anybody here is actually 8 years old. "Would you rather shove a full size football in romo's wife's twat and then sew her gapping gash shut to show him how to protect the ball?Or would you rather angry pirate her in front if him just for fun?"

It doesn't. Unfortunately, every subject gets absolute garbage like that. We still got it when the Sportatorium doors were open, but I'd pop in to more political posts on Unfair and see some real asinine stuff too.

SNL tried to to tackle the subject this week--the sketch was meh but the concept was amusing.

I know you're joking around, but, as someone who followed the redistricting process closely and submitted a map of my own, the coverage here was not only the best in town by a long shot (bang up job, Anna), but important news. Certainly more important (notice I didn't say popular) than a regular season Cowboys game.

Scruffygeist

Not downplaying the importance of the subject or the coverage, but it also has a much more limited appeal being one, politicalish, and two, affecting a portion of the geographical reach of the Observer as a whole. As a Collin County resident I blow right by the posts, but it also means I don't go in yuk monkeying it up for those readers that are indeed interested in it.

Now, now. Remember: Long before there was a Sportatorium, there was Unfair Park. All are welcome. Always have been.

Bob, have you actually been reading this stuff?  It's, really.... weird.

That kid's laugh in the last video made me projectile vomit.

When it was 24-3, I proclaimed early victory, but my brother wasn't convinced. "C'mon, Sam, we're talking about the Cowboys here. Anything can happen."

Anything can happen indeed with Romo at the helm. The Cowboys must use a first or second rounder on a QB next year. The Packers used a first rounder on Rodgers while Favre still had a couple years left. That kinda worked out good for them.

Josh's broken records

They drafted the Agg couple of years ago Sam..as long as Jerrah is running this thing, there won't be a highly drafted QB..He's a football guy who can indentify talent.

Sam_Merten
Sam_Merten

"...as long as Jerrah is running this thing, there won't be a highly drafted QB."

Except Troy Aikman and Quincy Carter.

G_David
G_David

It obviously didn't take a genius to pick Quincy either.

Josh's broken records
Josh's broken records

Troy was the bow on top of the shiny new purchase Sam..and you couldn't pass on him...that pick was the easiest pick that the Boy's have ever had.  You don't pass on Elway, Aikman, Peyton.

I'll kinda give you a Q-car..but he was a 2nd rounder, not alot of cash involved..and an example of some of Jerrah's finest decision making ,for sure.

Jerrah has said time after time that you don't need to take a QB high in the draft, now that the rookie wage scale has been implemented, that may change..but take a quick look-see at where the QB's came from since Aikman left. (and what a pitiful list that is)

Quincy and Aggie are the only QB's drafted by the Cowboys to start a game, No?

Sam_Merten
Sam_Merten

Um, yeah I do. Jerry had just bought the team and had the No. 1 pick in the draft. You think he didn't weigh in on that? Either way, it didn't take a genius to pick Aikman, even though there were plenty of other studs in that draft class (Barry and Deion Sanders, Derrick Thomas, Andre Rison, etc.). Bottom line is it's been done before, with, of course, varying success.

G_David
G_David

Do you really think Jerry was running things when Jimmy was here?  Troy vs. Quincy is exhibit number one in my whole anti-Jerry rant.

Scruffygeist

Cue the people forgetting Romo is 31 and acting like he's got tons of years left and drafting a QB would be a waste. I think you're completely right and I've proposed the same idea a couple weeks ago. Draft for the future, develop a guy to compete for the job when Romo is 34/35. Romo may have saved some wear and tear being a roster afterthought for years, but he's catching up fast on getting planted in the ground, and he's obviously not getting much smarter. Good luck convincing Jerry it's a sound draft strategy though. He'll trade down for 2 4ths and sign David Carr after Kitna retires.

I'm making a call out to stop the BS "we should be 4-0" crap. You can't just credit them the two games they lost as just-barelys and automatically assume they completely destroyed Washington and SF. Didn't happen. San Francisco they tried to give the game to, and if a safety wasn't stupid and bites on a play fake it could've ended quite differently. In OT. They're a .500 team, isn't that painfully obvious? They were going to find a way to be .500 no matter which games they win or which they lose.

I'm pretty sure only Witten and Ware have a lick of football IQ on the field for that team. The rest are mental midgets. I may rant on Romo later, but he is who I thought he was--a good athlete who doesn't use his noggin. And anyone who dares mention Romo in the same sentence as Dirk again, just because they play in the same metro area, deserves to be smacked in the face with a soft German pretzel, and that's being kind to them. Don't insult Dirk like that. Ever. Whitt deserved to be jettisoned just for that.

Sports Cactus

I actually believe Romo has excellent football IQ. His downfall is he wants to be the hero. I hear so many people say he thinks he's "made it" just by starting, but I disagree. I think Romo wants so badly to be the hero, to be the savior, he thinks every down is the one he's going to make a miracle happen. So he never takes a break from that "this one is going to be a big play" mentality. It wasn't enough for him to win the game by 24 - he wanted some kind of miracle 50-point win to prove he is worthy.

I never saw it like this before yesterday, but I guess it comes down to humility. His vanity and need for acceptance causes his to do stupid things.

Scruffygeist

Isn't that a low football IQ? Forcing plays, no matter the motivation, to me means he's a moron. Didn't you see how Stafford would throw the ball away? Does Romo throw the ball away more than rarely? That right there screams of intelligence to me. Accept the play has failed and minimize the damage, but Romo acts like he's one of us playing Madden. We all know there's a button to throw it away in Madden, but we always force it in there thinking we can be heroes and playing it safe is boring. But we're not professionals doing it for real, he is, and he takes the Madden approach. So either he's a moron and doesn't know better, or he does know better and he's a stubborn or arrogant moron.

Josh's broken records
Josh's broken records

I haven't played any Madden s.k. (since kiddoes) but methinks me and Romo both only call the play where all four wideouts run deep posts...everytime.

Sturms_Bloody_Rectum
Sturms_Bloody_Rectum

Romo F'ed up big time, the play calling can be questioned(passing versus running), and what was the Cowboys defense doing in the 2nd half? As far as Jerra, he's still looking to put HIS stamp on this team, outside of the shadow of Jimmy. Not working. Did Lebron post any words of encouragement to Romo?

I'm looking for a link of the 3rd and 4th quarters, the Sandman got me......

TheRealDirtyP1
TheRealDirtyP1

Doesn't matter much what plays are called when the qb is "killing" half of them. I'm not sure on the Witten play, if that was called a pass or he changed it. It's really a catch-22, it's not like they were having any success running the ball. You know, it's amazing, you watch a guy like Demarco Murray in college and he's so explosive and fast. But so far he's been neither. He looks like the kids on my son's flag football team. They're scared to run north/south, and just keep running east/west until they're tackled.

Negative sir. Danny took his team to 3 conference championships brotha. He won playoff games. You just watch your dirty little mouth when you're discussin' the Greatness of Danny White, sir.

Pat Boyack

I watched Danny White make countless mistakes and fuck ups. Look at the team he had verses the team Romo has. If Tony had the same team as far as talent is concerned he would have a few Conference wins too. And the only one that matters is the Big One.

Hey, WTF. Is Dandy Don chopped liver. Romo reminds me a lot of Meredith, only he plays for the Cowpussies and not Doomsday.

I stand by what I said and we'll let history unfold for Romo. Also, White had more than just Dorsett. Yeah they were an older team but with much more experience.

TheRealDirtyP1
TheRealDirtyP1

If not for "the catch", the Cowboys would have been in the Super Bowl in 81 and won it. He led them to 3 consecutive championship games, all 3 played on the road. Look at how bad the team was when he didn't play. I'm sure you loved Hogeboom and Pelleur, but they didn't do much did they? You're telling me the Cowboys had more talent back then? I'll give you Dorsett for sure. Romo can't get these guys to a championship game, so how can you make that comparison?  We'll be lucky to see this team in an NFC Championship game with Romo at the helm. The only qb's that have done it for this franchise have names like Staubach, Aikman, White, and Morton.
