I Have Come to the Conclusion That Dallas's Occupiers Are a Bunch of Wusses

Categories: Get Off My Lawn

SHZ_GetOffMyLawn_TitleImageV2.jpg
Wow. I came home late last night from the Occupy Dallas camp at Pioneer Plaza downtown and couldn't get to sleep for the longest. Something about what I had seen down there was tearing me up, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

While I was there last night, I watched as an Occupy Dallas person voluntarily went to the small group of police parked by the curb to report that there had been an unfortunate shoving incident in the leadership tent. It had been resolved, though, and everyone was sorry it had happened. The cops had that "too much information" look.

Also last night, a lawyer addressed the group. He told them that Occupy Dallas was the only Occupy in the country so far where there had been no arrests. They were to be commended, the lawyer said.

Later, I asked an Occupier what he thought about the Millionaires March in New York, where the occupiers were going to take their protest to the homes where the city's richest people live. He said he didn't think the occupiers in Dallas would want to do something quite that confrontational, and he pointed out that the Park Cities, where the richest people live, is pretty far away from Pioneer Plaza.

Then I went home and tried to get some sleep. But I lay in bed for hours, tossing and turning. Finally, when sleep did overcome me, I plunged immediately down into a series of bizarre nightmares.

occuplaytent.jpg
For the children.
In the first dream, it is December 17, 1773, and a ship of the East India Tea Company has recently arrived in Dallas Harbor. Residents enraged over the recent Wall Street-inspired Tea Act are gathered at Pioneer Park, where they are debating what to do. They called themselves Occupy Dallas.

Radicals in the group recommend that Occupy Dallas do the same thing done the day before by Occupy Boston, whose members, disguised as Mohawk Indians, had boarded a tea ship there, the Dartmouth, and dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbor.

"But this is Dallas," a voice cries out. "Instead of a violent and destructive 'Tea Party' where we ruin perfectly good tea by dumping it into the harbor, why not have an actual tea party, something really nice where we make tea and have little cakes and those cool little miniature sandwiches on silver trays like in English movies?"

The mob roars: "CAKES AND COOL LITTLE MINIATURE SANDWICHES ON SILVER TRAYS LIKE IN ENGLISH MOVIES! CAKES AND COOL LITTLE MINIATURE SANDWICHES ON SILVER TRAYS LIKE IN ENGLISH MOVIES!"

What's this? An imposing figure in a white powdered wig emerges from nearby City Hall. It's Lord Mary, the City Manager! She says, "I can go with the tea and the cakes, but we are not going to allow any cool little miniature sandwiches like in English movies."

"TEA AND CAKES, OK!" the crowd roars. "TEA AND CAKES, OK!"

The dream dissolves. Oh, no, it's my other nightmare, the awful recurring one where I'm back in college and I wake up really hung over and my roommate says, 'What about your history final?" I haven't studied at all! Running, running, running, grabbing a seat in the class. They hand out the test. It's all essay! One question!

Oh, man! I know this one. The question: "How come everybody remembers the Boston Tea Party but nobody remembers the one in Dallas?"

Once again, not studying at all pays off handsomely.

Jim maybe the Dallas crowd is a little smarter than the rest? The morning media rounds are a contrast of the "way" that the Tea vs. Occupy groups protest. The Occupy is taking a small bath over that cop car thing.

Mrfozzy
Mrfozzy

I know we are in Dallas and this is blasphemy, but do any of you think the oil companies might be a little corrupt. I mean just slightly. They may have billed someone incorrectly or fired someone who didnt deserve it. Little things, nothing systemic mind you like funding every show on television to push an agenda or make shady deals with the middle east that created the war, or bought every republican politician. That would be too stereotypical. Or tried to take down the EPA because they dont want anyone to tell them to clean up their act. There is a solar convention right at pioneer park at the convention center. You think occupy dallas is being weak? Well they arent taking on the oil companies, hmmm till now. That will bring some attention. By the way I've cleaned up numerous hazardous waste sites across the USA and know how badly they like to keep their mistakes covered up.

Maybe have a little 'Texas Tea Party'. Get it??? Texas Tea?? :p

Conservatives, who believe in the rule of law, and that our natural rights come from nature/God, not the State, to whom corporations are dependent on  for "positive rights,"  having not been born in nature/or having descended to the Earth in the image of God, ought join the Occupy Movement.  Your government is corrupt.  Your Representative Democracy is a sham. We are your only hope.

Liz Salander
Liz Salander

Well said.  They need to get some courage down there.  It is called "occupy" for a reason.  I was excited about this non-movement movement coming to Dallas, but I am sick of the pandering to the system crap.  That is what we are supposed to be protesting.

Charles Hayden
Charles Hayden

pandering to the system? no courage?  get the fuck out of hear with that shit.  If you want to get your head cracked in before the city even knows what we're doing and why, you're welcome to that.   But don't go inciting anyone else to some deranged Geronimo mission.  We don't need to incite police brutality; when they wanna start beating our asses, they will. If you want more done on the protesting side, get down there and organize it.  Those people have been there a week and they are working their asses off.  Most of them are young people who are learning as they go.  And, look, I am proud of the fact that we have managed to keep the police at bay this long through appeals to the better angels of their nature.

Liz Salander
Liz Salander

It isn't anything you are doing that is keeping the police at bay.  They follow orders and that is it.  They just haven't received the orders...yet.  Trust me, there are national directions on this movement.  They will allow some level of it.  But they will make sure they you understand who is in control.  I'm not saying to "incite" things, but just don't talk to them - don't engage them...don't forget who they work for.  You are, at the very least, bringing awareness to people by your occupying dallas.  You have to think in PR terms.  It does no favors for you to go overboard attempting to keep peace with police.  Peace is one thing, but going overboard is another.

Charles Hayden
Charles Hayden

Whatever, they're human beings, and if we want to be treated as human beings, we ought to demonstrate that in-kind.  We ought to make it as hard as possible for them to shut-down their conscience, and follow orders to commit violence against peaceful protesters. I wasn't there for the incident Jim was talking about, but we've made it clear that we intend to maintain the public order of the camp, and turn over those who commit crimes against individuals to the police. We have sought to formalize intergovernmental relations with the local government. They have reject it. We have done everything we can to make peace; and any civil disobedience that occurs now is firmly grounded in natural law.

MattL1
MattL1

I'm getting quite tired of people saying that these movements have no concrete solutions.  At least they recognize the heart of the problem.  Who is dumber, the person who sees a problem but no solution, or the person who doesn't even recognize that there is a problem?

Nailemup

Don't worry. It's working. That's what scares them.

See my plan for campaign finance reform for solutions. It's been posted twice now in discussions.

It's my understanding that there are massive protests planned nationwide for Saturday. I think you can expect a large showing in Dallas as well.

hubris?  shit could go wrong man. I go unarmed in the park.  Whatever.  And I don't like whatever you were suggesting about "blood in the streets" being needed..

Ok, if you really fear for your life then I guess there is no need in further discussion.  Best of luck to you.

Charles Hayden

appreciate the support.....but yeah, I'm kind of worried.  Shit could go wrong.  And while I am a gun-owner, I'm also a law abiding gun owner, and when I'm at the park I go unarmed.   And I don't like jokes or jests about killing people.

Jim won't be happy until there is blood in the streets and tear gas in the air. what if they head out towards Swiss Avenue?

Jim Schutze
Jim Schutze

I don't live on Swiss. And I have a sign on my house that says "Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite," so I think I'm safe from both the revolutionaries and the SMU kids.

rubbercow

It's sad because "blood in the streets" is precisely what is needed.  Unfortunately, we have all become so fearful of our rulers that we wouldn't dare do anything that would risk our wages.  I don't even know what it would take to cause a real, honest to god protest in this country.....

pak152

oh just go to all the occupy "protests" and take away the iphones, ipads and other electronic gear. they will either rise up in revolt or sit down and whine

We're the ones who are likely to get killed.  If not by the police, than by some rightwinger with a machine gun.

too funny! You people aren't a threat to be met with violence.  You're basically juveniles staying out too late, defying 'oppressive' parents.  The fact is, you're not organized enough, populous enough, and not employing enough 'strategery' for anyone to bother with taking violence to you.  Put down your overinflated sense of importance, pick up your sign, and get out of MY park (I pay taxes too, ya know)

Jesus, quit being such a dramatic ninny!  Do you honestly believe that the police are going to kill you?  A rightwinger with a machine gun?  Listen, I thoroughly respect what y'all are doing, but don't get too big for your britches.  Hubris is always bad...

Won't be the police or a right-winger with a machine gun that the 1% sends. They've got their own enforcers. I think Mr. Hayden is wise to be worried and brave to use his real name. Just look at what's happening in Mexico to citizens trying to speak out against corruption.
