Even Karl Rove Doesn't Like Robert Jeffress's "Cult" Comments About Mormons, Romney

Categories: Politics, Religion
Karl Rove was on The O'Reilly Factor last night discussing the impact the First Baptist Dallas pastor's comments will have on Rick Perry's campaign, among other things. Alas, Bill O'Reilly was off, and instead Dubya's right-hand man was on with Laura Ingraham, who feels bad for Perry being associated with Jeffress. Whatever, says Rove. This is all on Jeffress:
This was a terrible mistake on the part of the pastor. It's the kind of thing that doesn't belong in politics. We want our candidates, we want our leaders to be people of faith, but, you know, we don't get into and we haven't gotten into since at least the 1960 presidential election into a determination over whether or not somebody's professed faith is acceptable to the vast majority of Americans.

I must be ill!  This is the first time I have ever agreed with Carl Rove!  Wow!  By the way, I think this is going to put an end to Prick Perry's run for president.

I realize that most are not schooled in the peculiar republican establishment dialectic idiom, but the "Even Karl Rove" intro is partcularly naive. To Rove and his ilk, conservative Christians were always the peasant class component of their apparatchik, and easily led.  Romney was always the R establishemnt choice. Why? follow the money. Big insurance needs to keep Obamacare fairly intact in order to increase profits . Also there be no "messin" with wall street, Big OIl etc.

Is this the downtown church that runs a school?

Yeah. Great school,  but the kids are required to report all potentially disloyal, seditious or Biblically errant behavior by their parents to their Biblical gruppenfuhrers.

Karl Rove's top button on that shirt must be industrial-strength quality.  I don't know how that thing hasn't popped off yet.

Karl, you might want to mix in a salad now and then.  Just sayin'.

The pit bull of the Republican Party is talking about ethics in politics?!?!?!

Sheep laying down with lions, the police force disbanded because of a lack of crime, social security is now solvent to 8650 with a benefits increase for everyone at 5% above the CPI ...

Wow, what will happen next?

Well Karl Rove hates Perry, he's an untrustworthy calculating snake, I don't think you can really read anything more into it than Karl thinks he found another way to attack Perry.

But the real story to me is how much longer this Cain joke is going to continue now that it looks like Perry doesn't have a chance in hell. Romney has the nomination sealed, there are no other viable options in the Republican party but conservatives hate him. What to do? Just toss the election? Eat each other alive over party purity like is happening now and then do it into the election with I think is an inevitable right wing third party candidate?

Cain is just a straw man to prove the GOP isn't racist. They don't hate Obama because he is half-black, they hate him because he is a Democrat, Mooz-lum and not a US citizen.

What the hell does "half-black" mean?

Just like the "Full-Black" but usually smaller and lighter, and generally not used as a blocker.

You are assuming the "race" of the other half.  Half-black also means half-not-black, the former just "sounds better".

Same as "half-white", only lighter.

So questioning the Catholic faith of a Democratic candidate is acceptable but questioning the Mormon faith of a Republican candidate is a "terrible mistake"? Well, yeah, if the GOP wants to ever raise funds in Utah again or count on them as a solidly red state, I suppose it is.

Rove didn't say it was "acceptable" to question the faith of a Democrat candidate.

He said questioning "whether or not somebody's professed faith is acceptable to the vast majority of Americans" is a thing "we haven't gotten into since at least the 1960 presidential election". Nothing about those attacks on Kennedy being a mistake, unconstitutional, or anything negative--just that "we" hadn't done it since America's only Catholic president was elected in 1960. A simple "it was wrong then and it's wrong now" would go a long way here.

Rove/Jeffress/Ingraham/Perry/O'Reilly/Dubya......all in one story.  How did you do that?

One story? Man, that was barely four sentences. Oh -- magic.

Not surprising, since Rove attended high school in Salt Lake City and university in Utah. He probably knows a few Mormons. He and Perry aren't on the best of terms and I am sure Rove is plotting Perry's demise in the primary.Perry's attempt to distance himself from Jeffress isn't going to work because Jeffress has a long history of making ridiculous comments.
