In Oak Cliff, a Twin Towers Tribute

If you happen through the intersection of Beckley and Jefferson in the next few days, you will see this scene -- two 20-foot-tall cargo containers painted white. The installation, which is being put into place at this very moment, is not yet finished; Jason Roberts, the man in charge, says the ground around the Twin Towers tribute still has to be painted white. He also notes it was done at the behest of Ralph Isenberg, who'd contacted the Better Block-ers about fashioning some kind of September 11 memorial near the Bank Tower in Oak Cliff.

Matter of fact, I see here that Isenberg wants it to be more than something you merely drive by. As he explained to Roy Appleton earlier this week, "We hope people will bring flowers, teddy bears, candles and we'll have chalk. This is going to be spontaneous. If it catches on it will be a great statement that Dallas cares."

While I respect the artist's efforts and intentions, with the location of that installation, it won't be long before some stupid fucking vatos tag it.

9/11 was a horrific tragedy that should be remembered.  However, I will be glad when this anniversary has passed so that we can hear about something on a different topic.  Constant repetition and recreation in the media and elsewhere does nothing but diminish the impact and give a lot of people tired-head.

I have two comments about the installation in general:

1: Since we all know how dickish some people can be, what are the odds that sometime this weekend, someone tries to fly a remote-controlled plane into it?

2:  Is it really spontaneous if someone has planned and determined that " This is going to be spontaneous"?

I liked it. Simple rectangles set just so. A really eloquently-simple, but powerfully evocative icon. Thanks for doing this. Too few Ralphs and Jasons in Dallas-Ft. Worth.

Laudable as the sentiment may (or may not) be.  This installation looks like a piece of schlock.

In a way, I really do agree with you.

All right. Can we have one item where it doesn't turn into name-calling three comments in? I don't think Alan's trying to be mean-spirited. I am going the benefit-of-the-doubt route here -- perhaps he means it's all a bit ... overwhelming. The re-grieving process, that is, being played out on an endless loop on cable news.

I think if that's how he meant it, he might have tried a little harder to present his case.  I amend my statement.  Maybe he just SEEMS like one.

You think something occurred in the last decade that had more impact on the world?  Please, tell us.

I'm sure most people would rather not remember 9-11 but ... it cannot be forgotten.
