That's Church: After All That, Glenn Hudson Agrees to Shutter DarkSide and Playground

And now, 3027 Northwest Highway can go back to being empty.
After much talk about his civil liberties and all the spiritual good his clubs were offering young adults and couples, Wyakie Glenn Hudson, who operated DarkSide and The Playground, agreed to shut down both locations. His approach was significantly softened as he addressed reporters outside this morning's hearing at the George Allen -- a hearing that never quite took place since the Hudson and the city reached an agreement behind closed doors to shutter the drugs-and-danceteria on Northwest Highway and swingers joint on Harry Hines.

"I love Dallas," Hudson said, adding that Assistant City Attorney Melissa Miles and the Dallas Police Department probably love the city even more. "[Miles] felt this was the best for the city," he said. "If [law enforcement] tells me to jump, I say, 'How high?'"

Miles said she was approached by Hudson last night to try and reach an agreement before the hearing. She implied that he may have been embarrassed by the city's evidence against him and decided that enough was enough.

"We had video that was not going to be flattering," she said, adding that her office also had evidence about the club management's connection to the drug sales witnessed by undercover officers.

"I think Mr. Hudson knew that the time was up," Miles told reporters. She said the agreement reached is "permanent" and prohibits Hudson from opening similar businesses. "I think we'd call it a good day," she said of her office's success in having Hudson's operations shut down.

As she spoke to reporters, supporters of Hudson danced down the hallway on their way out of the courthouse.

Less jubilant DarkSide employees who go by the names Lacey Jayne and John Wayne attended the hearing as witnesses. They never had to take the stand, but told Unfair Park that Hudson was "full of shit" in his previous assertions that the club had a religious connection.

"You can't love God and love money," they told a throng of reporters as they left the courtroom.

I really miss Shotgun Sam's.

That was the old pizza joint right?  When I was 7 I loved that place.  Where was that, I used to know, but that's long down the memory hole.

Yep, the pizza place with the little character holding a shotgun spinning on the roof.  It was really close to this place, but I can't remember the exact location - the building is long gone.  There was a 3 or 4 year stretch where both my sister and I spent every birthday there.  I just found their FB page, and apparently they sent out free pizza postcards on childrens' birthdays, which probably had something to do with it.http://www.facebook.com/pages/...

The pizza was great, at least it was to my 8-year-old palate.  I do recall my parents liking it as well.  I remember the band playing Up Against The Wall, Redneck Mother every time we were there.  I think it was their signature song.  It was on the north side of N.W. Highway, right next to possibly the worst topless bar in the history of boobies - Deja Vu.

yeah, I remember the long salad bar and the stage with bands.  I remember some band with a brass section--that trombone really captured my attention.  Seems like that was pretty good pizza, though I can't really recall.  I remember the big oven there behind the counter where you ordered.  Was it on the South side of HH?

I am glad this charade is over, and it won't cost us mor money in taxes to have DPD go undercover more, more cases, etc...

This is proof of what is wrong with Dallas. Instead of pretty designer bridges and parks over motorways, THIS is the crud that needs ot be cleaned up. Bachmann Lake, like other areas, was once a nice, exciting place to hang out. European Crossroads, Blue Note, all kinds of places to go out and have a good time without worrying about a shooting or theft.

who were they hurting Diane?  You don't buy the "Pusher" myth do you?

Diane Birdwell

Pusher myth? No, the man was hooking up teens with drug dealers. Call it a rave house, whatever. It was a place for teens to go to en masse, and the man's own employees called him on it. Now, if you want him to open this club next to your house, go ahead. Your address, please?

Diane, there are NO homes near there.  I used to own a condo near there.  If we legalized drugs they'd be as carefully regulated as alcohol is, till then, we've ceded the drug market to criminals.

Dallas has plenty of  places to go out and have a good time without worring about a shooting or theft.  It's just none of them happen to be on NW Hwy or Harry Hines.

Yeah - that intersection of NW Highway and Hillcrest can really get violent on a Saturday night, especially when the regulars at El Fenix are overserved.

1. I dont doubt this guy is a charlatan. 2. Is the Dallas Police going after higher end establishments too that could be also involved in drug deals? Or was this a targeted action against this guy only. Cause Lord knows there are other places where drugs abound. 3. Could this be some $$ investor looking to get a hold of this prime location. Just curious....

There isi a contingent of citizen activists trying to clean up NW Dallas. Maybe they wanted it--but if I recall correctly, it was a teen reporter for a school paper that blew the whistle ont his guy.

"Clean up NW Dallas"...I just got goose bumps when you said that. Sanitize the way Uptown is? Where kids can do drugs but since they are inside tony clubs, driving mercedes and Ranger Rovers...its just looks cleaner.NW is eclectic and I hope it remains that way. I want crime out, but I dont want yours or someone else's definition of "clean".

Prime location? 3027 Northwest Highway?

Good one.

Im not talking high end, but its a great location for any business looking for underdeveloped market. Did you notice those mom and pop stores called Target, SAMs and Walmart close by? They did not end there by the chance.

Maybe I need to look closer, but I seem to remember ample vacant space around there.  If true, there's nothing special about that place.

Too bad the City can't shut down another bogus "religious" gathering--you know, the one at the Reliant Stadium in Houston, that's run by another religious charlatan, Rick Perry.

Where is the order? Is it closed or only for under 21.
