Some SALT to Season Those Subpoenas

65Norman.jpg
So, the feds want Pettis Norman and Jon Edmonds to appear before a grand jury on July 20 -- can't imagine why. Oh, wait. My bad. And speaking of the Inland Port, for those who knocked off early for the Christmas holidays in '08, after the jump is a doc you might want to read (or re-read) this morning: the Service and Leadership Team's (or SALT) demand for equity in developer Richard Allen's Inland Port development. Schutze, who explained the significance of his Christmas gift here, is up shortly with more. Me, I'm waiting for Willis Johnson to return calls and emails. Meanwhile: "The Rev. Horace Bradshaw of the New Greater Emanuel Baptist Church in Dallas has called for a march at the Dallas Federal Courthouse for 9 a.m. Saturday." Amen. SALT Inland Port Proposal

"You can rest assured, we ain't no ignunt asses."

Its so sad

A nine page proposal to ask for $1.5 mil. Only 3 pages actually say what services they will provide. Those services seem to consist only of introductions to the right people.

I had  respect for Pettis Norman until now.

btw, it is not illegal to be stupid or uneducated. (I only mention the latter because the proposal was so poorly written and showed a total lack of business background). It is not illegal to ask for money to do nothing.

It IS ILLEGAL to ask for money  OR ELSE. Didn't see any threats in writing. Considering what happened afterwards, we can see the threats in action. JWP fulfilled his part!

Though the SALT proposal is ludicrous is stupidity illegal?

"The Rev. Horace Bradshaw of the New Greater Emanuel Baptist Church in Dallas has called for a march at the Dallas Federal Courthouse for 9 a.m. Saturday."  He does know the courthouse is closed on Saturday, doesn't he?  Does he plan to stand outside a closed building in 100 degree heat chanting, "no justice, no peace?"  Sheeze, no wonder JWP keeps getting re-elected.

I thought SALT had something to do with Angelina Jolie being a badass.

So, which of these people is she?

I wonder how many "SALT connected" people were already on the Allen payroll?  That should be easy enough to find out even DMN could do it.

I know that it is a long shot being as that they are a private company, but any chance we have a client list?  Other than name dropping, the have listed no references.

If this was formed solely to service the Allen Group, the evidence that this was a shakedown becomes stronger.

My criticism of the grammer and presentation was not meant solely to be mean.  Rather, my point is that when you are selling something that the user really does not need you should put your best foot forward.  You must show the user why they "need" it, but without saying need.

If there were compliance issues related to MWOBs included in grants and tax abatements, companies usually hire a grant or compliance coordinator.  The other issues will be covered by contracting with local established PR and Legal groups.  The total comes out far less than $1.5 million and a 15% equity stake.

Dallas needs to watch its sodium.

I will agree with the earlier poster, not very well written and obviously a shakedown.  When shaking someone down for $1,500,000 and a 15% equity stake, but a little more effort into it.  This is a first draft at best.

The repetition of the work "need" in my opinion symbolizes a threat or at least criticism. Next time they shake someone down, the should revise that heading to Objectives and reword the comments as something they already do. In the manging relationships area, they seem to ant the visual of a lot of points, however the repetition of the phase "Develop the understanding and confidence of TAG and the DLH to all appropriate ______" is very weak.

Mr. Allen was smart to turn them away as the proposal is very weak.  I would not use their services.  The only credentials that they have really provided is name recognition and name dropping of friends.  It was basically, the people who will give you problems are our friends.

I am just suprised that they did not include garbage and security services as well.  I feel like I am in New Jersey.

Can we possibly imagine what it must be like for Richard Allen?  To put so much money and work into a project like this and have it run into the ground by these toadstools?  We're all angered and outraged.  How must he feel?  He must be a man of great restraint.

So Allen, not being from here, called Bull Shit on this.  I wonder how many of these worked in the past?

Curious George

The "proposal" is a self serving biography of three men who ,while having achieved some fame, have no understanding of an inland port or what they could specifically do to facilitate a success of the project. They son't ebven refer to the specifics of the project. I do see they want a 35% monority participation ,but don't define the basis for that number.Allen could have employed one man to handle all of the minority contracts, the other items like tax breaks ,would ordinarily be part of the project anyway. The SALT has no flavor, save the taste of money.Wouldn't 60,000 jobs in Southern Dallas be enough to create a desire for  these dedicated men volunteer their services? Then, when you are in it for yourself, that's all thast matters I guess.Shame on all of you crooks.

Glad to see these two gentlemen getting to "bond" with the grand jury. Nothing like a little quality time with the authorities.

SALT is white, shouldn't they be the PEPPER Group.

So, basically they wanted $1.5MM to be TAG's Chamber of Commerce?  Doesn't South Dallas/Oak Cliff already have one of those?

ANd does anybody have any idea why the DMN keeps reporting that these jokers offered to "buy" 15% of TAG?  The DMN never mentions what they offered to "pay."

Sheesh - what a tacky looking proposal.  Obviously SALT needed the cash to buy Power Point.  Then they could - at least - throw in a few cheesy pieces of clip art and a page border.  What a joke.

I agree.  Salt makes things taste good.

.......a shakedown.........plain and simple. When I was young, my grandfather took me to my first pro football game. The stadium was located in a not-so-good neighborhood in the city, and the stadium was so old, it had no parking lots. So, people had to park their cars on the streets around the stadium. After grandpop parked his car, we were approached by a young man who said he would "watch" the car to make sure nothing bad happened to it while we were at the football game. My grandfather begrudingly paid him a dollar. As we walked away, I heard my grandfather curse under his breath, something about "insurance".

When JWP started putting his bribe requests down on paper it was probably the beginning of the end for him ...

For the life of me I can't understand why Allen would deny the request of such an unprofessional, cheesy proposal requesting $1.5 million for something that Allen could do for free.

No, but the functional equivalent of "you got a really nice building here it'd be a shame if something happened to it," is.

He was so excited when he came so full of hope used a lot of money buying 6,000 acres of land not being used for anything. The buildings built out there are wonderful. To steal a man's dream when he has put his money, moved family to be stopped by people for money makes it worse in my opinion.

On the outside, anyway.  On the inside he was probably really nervous and all like "Gosh I'm sweating too much, the duct tape is liable to lose its stickiness and then the tape recorder's gonna fall right out the bottom of my pants leg."

Yes, and remember how many people went to jail, Martha Stewart, Scooter Libby, not for the underlying crimes but for lying to the authorities.

Along those lines, I just noticed Brent D.'s comment from two years ago on the Schutze post linked to above (at the word "here"):

"Perhaps the Service and Leadership Team should change their name to People Enabling Political Posturing to Elevate Racism (PEPPER)."

You took the words right off my keyboard.  I guess "buy" only implies money changing hands.  You could say they were "buying" it with good deeds instead,  If you're the DMN.

I know, right? How many times did it say what The Allen Group "needs to" do? Where else in this country does a private developer wishing to develop his own private property get told what he "needs to" be doing for the community? And for a fee? New Jersey, maybe?

Come on Betty, you know they'll come up with enough money to pay a few dozen "walkers."

Also, the mob does not take an equity stake in your business at the start.  If you get behind on payments, that is another story.

The mob is also better in that they provide actual services such as sanitation, garbage and financing.  The modern mafia rose largely out of a need for necessary services which traditional companies would not provide to Italian immigrants.

You are so right, Betty. They stole the man's hopes, dreams, aspirations, dignity, his life work.......only God knows how much damage they wrought on he and his family. And, of course he was trying to make money, but he made a HUGE INVESTMENT in the Dallas Community. His IP project would have brought so much good to ALL of DALLAS (I'm intentionally NOT focusing on what his project could have meant for the "Southern Sector").

I was thinking more in terms of not planting them in the ground.  If someone broke into your house and was stealing your $1200 TV would you shake their hand?  Multiply that by, I don't know, a few hundred thousand?
