Pilgrim's Pride Shuttering Massive Dallas Processing Plant, Affecting 1,000 Jobs

PilgrimsPridePlant.JPG
Shortly after Pilgrim's Pride announced that its second-quarter results were dismal (as in, "a net loss of $128.1 million"), the chicken-seller delivered some very bad news: It's closing its mammoth Dallas processing plant by September. The plant, on Ferris just south of downtown, employs 1,000 hourly and salaried employees, says the company, some of whom will be allowed to apply for similar jobs elsewhere in the company.

Bill Lovette, president and chief executive officer of Pilgrim's, says, sorry, but he had no choice: "By closing the Dallas facility, we can consolidate that production volume at three other plants and help those sites run closer to full capacity. In addition, we will eliminate the cost associated with transporting live birds from northeast Texas to the Dallas processing plant and shipping offal from Dallas back to our protein conversion plant in Mt. Pleasant." Nothing pleasant about it.

Karl Zavitkovsky, head of the city's Office of Economic Development, wasn't aware of the closure till contacted by Unfair Park. And he acknowledges: It's a big blow.

"Any time you have a facility of that magnitude close, it's not good news," he says. "The fact is there's not a whole lot we can do about that, and unfortunately it's the sort of thing that happens in this part of the economic cycle. I guess we've been more fortunate than most to not have more of this happen, and we have a more balanced economy than most, but it's the sort of thing of thing you can expect and try to mitigate. [But] it's never nice when a big operation shuts down and a lot of people are put out of work."

I'm reaching out to their HR people right now.  I have responsibility for two manufacturing plants (Mesquite & Greenville) and we have 20+ openings at all levels right now.  Any Pilgrim's Pride employees out there reading this should visit www.fritzind.com/careers and apply for operator, lead, supervisor jobs in both locations.  We have openings in operations, maintenance, manufacturing, and front office.  We've hired people from PPC before and they do really well here.  We offer two medical/dental plans, company paid disability & life insurance, we recently became an ESOP (meaning every employee becomes an owner), and our 401k matches 75% of the first 15% of your base salary that you contribute (yes you read that correctly).

Thanks in advance!

The plant left because it cost more to do business in Dallas than in these other cities. That's why it is so important for Dallas to pass new ordinances that will increase the cost of doing business here such as flow control. Keep trying to stick it to business and they will eventually stick it to you. Mary Suhm and city council take note.

JWP style emancipation, jobs=slavery.

WHAT?
WHAT?

Had to be poor upper management since the change. Use to be one of the countries most efficient facilities.

Did they get any economic incentives from the city in exchange for job creation for a certain period of time? If so, did they fulfill their obligations?

what is "protein conversion"?

this is horrible news for the dallas workforce.  Pilgrams Pride employed many employees 99% of which other employers considered "unhirable".  These are folks that are not going to be able to find work easily and that's very sad indeed.

Is Mr. Charlie's still open across the street? If so, I'll return for a good hamburger when the stench has left the area.

But, but, I thought Dallas dodged the whole recession thingy, and the housing bubble thingy, and everything was just great here - now, this bit of noise.

Oh well, can't wait to move into my new condo at Museum Tower - thanks Governor Good Hair - can't wait 'til you're in the White House.

WTF is "protein conversion" anyway? Stuff like this explains the urban legend that KFC changed their name because they weren't allowed to call their food "chicken" by the FDA.

Just the push I needed to buy more organic/local product. My wife and I will be headed to Farmers Market on Saturday. That reminds me, we really enjoyed going a couple weeks ago. There was live music, the Canton Peaches were terrific.

Very sad for the families losing these jobs though.

this is a perfect opportunity for the Mayor to hook these employees up to the South Inland Port.Of course,he'll have to ask Ross Jr. for permission.

Ohm stop it. Dallas already gives away millions of dollars in incentives every quarter. There is a reason that businesses wants to be in Dallas otherwise we'd have no business at all.

Yup. Serious..worst nasty burger joint ever.NastyOffal is the collective of chicken parts that can not be packaged and sold. Guts, blood, feathers, frames with remaining meat and so forth. Paws, gizzards, hearts and stuff are not in this as they are sold to humans. Offal is then shipped/processed to make Dog Food.Earlier poster reply: Don't know if you have seen the demographics of employment at that plant in the last 4 years. They cracked down on illegals long ago. That is why this plant can't make money any longer. Those people supplied you with cost affordable product and great quality. No sir, this plant is full of Good Ol' Legal Americans my friend. 100% sure.

Actually, in college we had a big rugby tournament at SFA every Nov.  There was a large party (50kegs) out on a wooded lot, that had a stage, general lighting, but was just bare dirt.  They had gotten crossed up and accidentally fertilized the area a week early.  The ground was covered in a slick, gray-white slime of pulverized chicken skin, beaks and feet.  Girls were slipping and falling on their asses left and right--the more intrepid ones bringing up a chicken foot or beak.

Offals are like the "shit, what are we gonna do with these weirdo leftover organs" that stump chefs. They probably found some way to compress them into edibles.

This whole sitch is offal, I tell you!

The processing of all foods stink. You would be suprised the smell bread makes. What are you going to eat ..Air?  Now you can pay a higher distribution price since it is not local. By the way, that smell is also the hundreds of bums that hang out around there, the homeless, the drug addicted,  the seedy bars, "Restaraunts", Liquor Stores, dilapidated housing and schools in that area. I am sure it will smell like roses now though.

Bill, you might try halal/zebiha butchers.  There's a slew of them between TI and Downtown Richardson.  World Market on that TI loop, Sarah bakery on Sherman I think both have butchers in house, carving up young calfs, goats and sheep that are all grass-fed and slaughtered humanely; and free-range chickens.  These are all more lean and tender than conventional American meats.  The food miles vary so some due diligence would be needed.

A funny feature of these markets is that they don't butcher animals like we do; often chopping up meat into cubes for stew-meat.  Consequently, if you know your meat, you can find tenderloin and round priced the same.  (I know in Algeria liver cost more than prime rib)

These are the only places to buy olives, goat, couscous and, occasionally merguez.

pilgrim's used to advertise in mexico for jobs in the us...just sneak on over and we'll put you to work. then, with holding back pay for 2 weeks...and illegal workers disappearing...they didn't have to hand out as many paychecks.

They were one of the biggest employers of convicts in the area.  It's going to get even harder for a person with a felony conviction to get a job in Dallas now.

you obviousloy DON"T know. if you had actually driven by this place recently(i have) you would know the stink. bums don't stink that bad from that far away. if it was next door to your house you'd sing an entirely different tune.

People disapperaing..That is absurd and ignorant. I worked for Pigrims for 16 years right there at that plant as recent as 4 years ago and I still have a lot of friends there. They treated people right and did not advertise in Mexico to come here. They have several plants in Mexico. People knew where to go just like they know where illegals are accepted now. Word of mouth. They were paid WELL over min. wage. Worked hard and efficient. 75% of the employees there were there 6 years or more at least. They had Six Flags family days, Christmas Parties, birthday parties. It was an extended family on 1,000. NO ONE DISAPPERED.. As far as the area goes, that plant is in is a crap hole. With or without that plant it is a crap hole.. Homeless shelters, drug infested apartemts, people living in card board cities under bridges. To your comment above..Worked there 16 years and I drive by there 3 times a week to this day as a short cut. Cracker Daddy is right...Full of LEGAL American convicts since they ran off the illegals many years ago. That is why there Margins/Profit suck there, that is why after 30 some years there they are shutting down. Have fun living in your new Utopia. Hope the metal recycler, homeless shelter, drug infested apts, run down liquor stores and clubs meet your expectations.
