The Proposed Redistricting Map For Dallas County That Caused Maurine Dickey to Lose It

No doubt you've heard by now that this morning's meeting of the Dallas County Commissioners Court was interrupted by a Dallas County Commissioner who threw a tantrum that included name-calling (you ... you ... bobos!) and the ol' take-me-to-jail-I-effin'-dare-you gambit. Mauine Dickey's outburst, captured by Channel 8, is after the jump.

And in it, you'll note she's holding up the map you see above -- the redrawn county districts, which the commissioners were to vote on till Dickey called the Democratic Party-friendly map a "sham," while one John Wiley Price insisted her district remains untouched. Shouted Dickey, who said last April she's going back to the BBQ biz soon as she can, "The Republicans have been disenfranchised." Jump for the new districts' demographics -- and, of course, the shouting.

Here's the behinds the scenes truth. Dickey thought she had a neat idea. She gets a map that is acceptable having one solid GOP seat. Everyone down there knew that part was going to happen because of the new county demographics. To the victor goes the spoils. She retires, right-winger Angie King jumps in the race - pitted against Mike Cantrell and the seat goes to the right-wingnut because most of Maurine's old district is the same district, and it's easy to make the case of Cantrell's cozy relationship with John Wiley Price is the worst thing on the planet and no republican would vote for him. She thought she had the map set just right and that all was hunky-dory. I would imagine this little scheme was hatched by the likes of Maurine, husband Roland, King, aspiring insider Lisa Luby Ryan (main backer for King) and a few others with nary a strategic brain cell in their head. Mike and the dems are not dummies and pull a fast one together. They switch a few precincts, change the name of district 1 to 2 and all the dems vote for it giving Mike cover during the vote, although he looked mighty sheepish during Maurine's tirade. Of course her tirade was planned. She had expected to be removed for not following the new decorum rules just put into place. But the the County Judge wouldn't take the bait and an exasperated Dickey finally figures out even this part of the plan didn't work and marched out.Winner: Mike Cantrell gets a full 4 year term without having to run again in two years and ducks the nuts that want him out for not being a true conservative.Losers: Maurine and company look like the idiots they are for not realizing the huge hole in their plan.More Losers: the voters in the Park Cities and parts of North Dallas that are now represented by GARLAND resident Mike Cantrell.Final Challenge: Wade Emmert needs to take control of the GOP Party quickly so that future strategic moves are not done by idiots.

I live in East Dallas and love it over here and I can assure everyone that I am not happy to have this ranting fool representing my district.  I voted for a Democrat, not some snotty bitch from Highland Park!   She needs to crawl back under the mansion she came from!

I think I just go gerrymandered...I feel so violated. Seriously, let's keep East Dallas and HP/PC separate. Despite what you may have heard, not all white people are the same.

The worst thing is that they put Lakewood in with Park Cities and North Dallas. We don't want anything to do with those places!

We need to send in The Bobs from Office Space to ask Dallas County, "so what exactly do you do here?"

It's nice to see that someone in politics these days is admitting that the voters are getting screwed!

The issue is not the lines or the demographics, the issue is renumbering the districts. North Dallas voters were just given Cantrell and lost their right to vote in a new commissioner.

If demographics is destiny, then we'll have 2 Mexicans, a Black and a White rep.

What has happened to the Commissioner's new Code of Conduct?

Also, is it just me or is Judge Clay Jenkins just as ineffectual as his predecessor Judge Foster Gump?

The man reminds of a Disney Animatronic in the Hall of Presidents.

Jenkins is worse at least Foster did not allow John Price to run over him. Most of Fosters troubles were due to trying to manage Price.Jenkins can not conduct meeting or order.Dam shame. That Court cost tax payers $500,000.00 for that performance. All of them are paid at least 90,000.00 Price ,Cantrell around a 100,000.00 per year plus benefits.

I'm not aware of all the details, and I am not a republican, but if something was included that she was not made aware of, then perhaps she has a legitimate complaint. All the cute comments here that so quickly disregarded her issues because she is a republican is a symptom of a larger problem.

My gripe is that in the video the news anchor didn't shut up through her whole rant.

Everyone has a legitimate complaint...it's a democracy. But it's more than a little disingenuous to be indignant about small 'd' democratic political outcomes only when they're at odds to you and your policy preferences.

Looks like more of Dallas County in proposed Dist 3 (JWP) will become more non-development zones unless cash crosses someone's palm.  Mesquite & Sunnyvale will get even gloomier.  Unless Dist 2 will be Cantrell's district, this is a dramatic change of lines.  I don't want to be in Mike Cantrell's district.  He has no core.  There's no there - there.

Where's her outrage over the state map? The repubs completely ignored demographics to add more repub seats.

Maurine and Debbie Georgatos should team up and make a short film about their anger.

What?  A white person shouting at a Dallas Commissioners Court meeting?  Maybe Rev. camping WAS right--the Apocalypse is upon us.

little bit of a problem the districts are not equal in population. based upon the population numbers in your link Dallas county has approximately 2, 367,000 folks. dividing by 4 (as in number of districts) each district should contain about 581K+/-

there was a constitutional case eons ago involving one man one vote and the result is that districts have to be nearly equal in population size

They are pretty close to that -- the districts range from 613K to 573K - within 5.5% of the 581K 'goal'.

"The Republicans have been disenfranchised."

Good.

It's not really good. The pendulum inevitably swings back the other way. Rigging districts is never a good thing.

No shit, just ask Tom DeLay.... Not that I care one way or the other, it's always gonna be "rigged" if your party loses out. On anything.

I actually know and agree with that.  My above comment was just my initial, smart-ass reaction to MoDi's (good nickname?) statement.
