Rick Perry's Supporters Can't Stop Making Him Seem Like a Closed-Minded Prick

"Pipe down, people, I'm trying to look presidential. My hair can't do all the work."
As he gears up for his inevitable run for president, Rick Perry is doing his very best to shield his inner kook and maintain some semblance of populism. But in the last couple days, two Perry allies have taken it upon themselves to paint the Republicans' Great God-Fearing Hope as unelectable as possible.

It started yesterday. After the fury of outrage over Perry's planned prayer rally, Eric Bearse, the spokesman for the event, had an opportunity to reiterate Perry's claim that the event was open to folks of all religions -- "including," Bearse could have said, "all you nice Jews, who, despite killing Jesus, have done so well mowing the lawns in the Holy Land for His eventual return that we'd totally be down to pray for you."

Instead, Bearse went with the exact opposite strategy, saying this to American Family Radio:

"A lot of people want to criticize what we're doing, as if we're somehow being exclusive of other faiths. But anyone who comes to this solemn assembly, regardless of their faith tradition or background, will feel the love, grace, and warmth of Jesus Christ in that assembly hall, in that arena. And that's what we want to convey, that there's acceptance and that there's love and that there's hope if people will seek out the living Christ."

Translation: As long as the doors to your heart are open -- and wide enough for Christ to come flying in -- you're more than welcome.

Perry, as far as I can tell, has yet to turn a hose on Bearse's warmth-of-Jesus-Christ routine. But he is running away from one supporter of his pet legislative project: the banning of nonexistent sanctuary cities.

The bill would require cities to allow their police officers to ask about immigration status in routine stops and arrests. That way, Perry's thinking goes, no Texas cities can ban their law enforcement agents from asking about immigration status, mitigating the risk of a city becoming a haven for illegal immigrants. Sanctuary cities don't really exist in Texas, and cops hate the bill, but xenophobic anti-immigration crusaders think it's swell. And one such support thinks she has an idea why such obviously noble legislation doesn't sail through the Capitol and right to Perry's desk untouched.

"If you want to know why we can't pass legislation in Texas, it's because we have 37, no, 36 Hispanics in the Legislature," Rebecca Forest, a co-founder of the Immigration Reform Coalition of Texas, said at a recent rally for the bill. "So, that's part of our problem, and we need to change those numbers. We need to do something about that in fact."

The comments, made Saturday, emerged yesterday and had the bill's supporters running for cover.

"The governor certainly does not agree with such misguided and unproductive comments," Perry spokeswoman Catherine Frazier told the San Antonio News-Express. "This is not about race or politics -- it is about public safety. We must ensure our peace officers have the discretion they need to keep Texans safe."

Especially the Christian ones.

Seem like? All the GOP candidates are flawed to such a degree none of them have a chance of  winning any election. Just sit back and watch the circus unfolding as they pander the far right for nomination. Bachmann and her gay healing husband are in the lead. At the same time she wants to blow up the economy. And that's the leader. It's all down hill from there.

Where are all these crazies coming from? If that statement is not racist what is?Hispanics serving in Austin are not illegal. Republicans and Tea Party people are going crazy with a Black man in Washington.I have never seen people act like this since the George Wallace school desegregation days. They are taking away AIDS medicine.senior citizen being put on street, making a woman take sonogram, doubling number of kids in classrooms this is awful. Now Perry wants to screw up the whole USA!

A Christian suggesting they're interested in promoting Christ!  THE SHOCK!  THE SCANDAL!!!

Sorry you don't understand the concept of how Christianity works.  What the guy is saying is that everyone is welcome, and they're definitely going to feel the Spirit of Christ move in the place.  It's not exclusionary.  The Beach Boys talked about 'good vibrations' and they weren't indoctrinating anyone into a cult.  That's the kind of thing he's talking about: supernatural mojo that he believes will effect everyone who is present, regardless of faith.  They don't NEED to believe in the source of said mojo, that's the entire point.

You know why there are no supporters of Perry commenting here?  BECAUSE THEY DON'T WATCH NEWS ON TV OR READ PAPERS OR NEWS SITES ON THE INTERNET (other than FoxNews, of course!)!  They know who to trust, and it certainly is not the "liberal" press.   They think Perry is a good conservative Christian, like them, and are too close-minded or brain-washed to question his views. LAZY-ASS Republicans.

It is ludicrous to imply that all are welcome regardless of faith tradition.  What about those of us with "None" as our faith tradition?  That demographic is 15% of the US population according to the 2008 American Religious Identification Survey.  I don't think we would feel welcome by this pious spectacle.  Between this and his governor designated days of prayer (for rain!), Rick is quickly becoming the US ranking theocrat.

And this is why, Mark My Words, when the economy gets better people will bail out of this state. So many people are here because they HAVE to be, not because they WANT to be. People like Rick Perry area huge reason why

For a spot on portrayal of Perry, I suggest you rent the fabulous film "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas". If you can bring yourself to fast forward through through Dolly, go to the part with the Governor of Texas doing his little song and dance ("The Sidestep")Matter of fact:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Donald Trump is looking like a better and better candidate. I think I'll write him in.

Of course that's about like being called the hottest girl in the trailer park.

The only positive that comes from Mr.Perry, the conservatives, and his militant evangelical brethren is their continued patronage of hairspray products....signed, Paul Mitchell and the United HairCare Manufacturers of America

I'm with you in that there is no need for an anti-sanctuary city bill without sanctuary cities, but saying that "cops" are against it because a handful of big city chiefs (i.e. political appointees) don't like it is a biiiig stretch.

Your title description of Perry is spot on.  And it's all about race and politics.  They could care less about public safety.  The only way to keep safe lots of Dallas residents is by not asking.

Last Saturday, two Dallas police officers visited my home as a part of the department's Beat the Heat summer survey.  Nice guys -- different races.  I asked them off the record if this home visit program would have any chance in hell of succeeding if they were required to investigate immigration status.  Both said no chance in hell.  Wouldn't even bother.

How's that good for public safety?

When politicians and political parties, of any stripe, simply say what they believe it makes it a lot easier to understand what they propose to do.

Prayer? Who could be against prayer? All you need to do is love Jesus Christ and you can pray with us at this state sponsored event...oh.

Illegal immigrants? Who could be against enforcing the law? They are illegal after all. All you need to do is throw illegal people in jail or out of the country because they are not helpful in the noble cause of getting me elected or my constituent's policy preferences...oh.

Listen, we need someone with strategic and visionary principals, but also we need someone with experience. Based on what I read so far, Rick Perry could deliver that. Remember that Obama did not have a minimal experience. As a result, that makes him more vulnerable to be manipulated like a puppet by banks and lobbysts. Bachmann for example, another risky candidate. No experience to back it up. Please Perry, run and let's see what ideas you bring to the table. Unfortunately Obama did not meet our minimal expectations and he will let lobbysts destroy this country.

The American Family Association is a hate group that literally calls for the re-criminalization of homosexuality and overall public persecution of gay people. Muslims don't get it any better, they are referred to by the AFA as "stupid inbreds". AFA is clearly a despicable hate group and it's sick that Perry repeatedly has chosen to align himself with them.

I don't know what to say, Perry doesn't have a problem associating himself with them, and it appears that a majority of Texans don't have a problem with it either. It is all very sad.

Given the damage he would do to the country, maybe our distastful patriotic duty is to keep him in Texas. Sad that people here keep electing him and then giving him a knee-jerk legislature to do what he wants to inflict on the state.

As a friend of mine says (about some Democrats), "I wish that person would shut up and stop being on my side." I'm sure Perry is at least thinking that right now about some of his supporters.

But, unfortunately, they DO vote.  And, in Texas, in higher numbers than those who do watch news on TV or read papers or news sites on the Internet.  Until reasonable, fair-minded people get off THEIR lazy asses and vote, we will continue to be governed by the Rick Perrys of this state.

Hey, folks, remember when Bill White (and KBH) warned you about Rick Perry?  Guess what?  He's even worse than predicted.

Interesting strawman, since that's not what SB6 would require.  Which I didn't know, either, until I read it just now.   Not that I agree with all of the bill, but it's worth reading before suggesting that cops would have to run immigration checks if they do a home visit.

I keep waiting for Perry to actually present something, but if you listened to him on his book tour, his stock answer to any serious question was a generic: "I don't see the harm in having a national discussion about x,y,z".

He would never actually OFFER an actual solution to all the problems Washington was supposedly sending us, he would just say that everyone should "discuss options".

I think you can ask any of the legislative leaders and they would concur the Perry has basically been non-existent in helping pass anything, and it was only this session that he suddenly came up with all the emergency items - NONE of which had anything to do with helping the economy.

Well, by your own definition, "strategic and visionary principals (sic)," Perry is unqualified.  He is neither strategic or principled.

That is the opposite we thought with W.  We though he would do less damage in Washington than in Texas.  Perry will not get the nomination because he would not be able to carry his own state.

We don't know who the real Rick Perry is. He keeps changing his stripes to get elected. And it works - he's yet to lose a race. But today's Perry is a far cry from the man who arrived in Austin in 1984 as a Democrat from Paint Creek.

You've got to figure Goodhair's in the same boat as Leppert. He shouldn't think he has a chance in hell but someone's probably writing a fat check to convince him to run anyway.

Perry like Palin and Gingrich have found a new way to make lots and lots of money.  None of them care about being President.  They want the funds that come with running for President.

Perry became a millionaire during twenty five years of public service, kinda like our teachers have, right?  But in the next twelve months he can become a multimillionaire like Palin and Gingrich by just posing as running for President.
