Friend of Unfair Park PeterK directs our attention to Cartoon Brew, which sends us to the Howard Lowery auction site -- where you'll find the drawing you see above, made in the mid-1920s at North Dallas High School by none other than Frederick Bean Avery, otherwise known as Taylor-born Tex. Avery, of course, is the man who created Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny during his legendary tenure at Warner Bros.; after that he landed at MGM.

Used to be when the AFI-Dallas handed out it Tex Avery Award to renowned animators, it did so with a ceremony at North Dallas. In '05, before his wingding, inaugural honoree Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Iron Giant) thumbed through old yearbooks and campus magazines for which which Avery had worked as an illustrator. I seem to recall this one was among them. The auction house says it sure is: "This rare original cartoon was created by the aspiring teen-aged artist, likely for one of the North Dallas High School publications." Right now it's cheap: $610, but with two whole weeks left on the bidding. If only Dallas ISD had some money.

Where was Grassville, and why does the grass on the left seem to spell out Waxahachie?

I thought the adjective was "renowned," and that "renown" was the noun.  Such that "an animator of renown" is likewise a "renowned animator."

Yes, yes. A hectic morning led to a few typos. My apologies.
