Dallas PD Says It's Made First, But Not Last, Arrest in Memorial Day Shutdown of Central

Dallas County Sheriff's Department
The man seen at right is Thomas Michael Roberts, a 35-year-old Dallas Police say was among the parade of motorcyclists responsible for shutting down and spray-painting Central Expressway on Memorial Day. No doubt you've seen the video, which went from YouTube to Channel 5 Monday night -- and led DPD directly to Roberts, who, police say, will be charged with the crime of tagging, the punishment for which is anywhere from 180 days to two years in state jail and a fine of up to $10,000. He's presently in county jail, where his bond's been set at $5,000.

But DPD's press release says Roberts likely won't be the last person thrown in Lew Sterrett for the crime: It's but the first "in what is anticipated to be a number of arrests in conjunction with the Memorial Day incident involving motorcycles shutting down Central Expressway and spray painting graffiti on the roadway," says the release. It also says:
Police investigators have been using a number of methods including social media to identify other individuals in the Memorial Day incident. The department has also received a number of tips through the iwatchdallas.net program that have been helpful in identifying individuals involved. The iwatchdallas tip program, implemented in October 2010, allows the public to quickly report suspicious activity to the police department or pass along other crime-related information.

Dallas Police will continue to work with the Dallas Sheriff's Office as well as state and local agencies on this case and to establish an area procedure for dealing with these issues.

If these immature jackasses want to block a major highway doing their stupid stunts, anyone driving an 18 wheeler is encouraged to plow right through them.  The truck driver will be doing society a great service in eliminating losers like these.  These bikers think it is their right to impose themselves and their stupidity on everyone else.  Just selfish and self centered.

I've seen these idiots shut down the Tollway with this nonsense. Can the SWAT team clear them out the next time they pull this crap?

I'm a biker who rides almost every day and I know this comment will annoy some of my fellow bikers but I don't know why these bikes are even allowed to be sold to the general public. They are high powered, race ready bikes beyond the ability of most of the people who buy them; kind of like if Chevrolet sold a NASCAR ready Impala to any fool on the street.

If these idiots want to stunt ride, they need to find themselves some pavement on private property and get the owners permission to use it. Maybe the lots of the dealers who sell them these things.

So, willfully blocking highway traffic is not a crime, but tagging that highway is?

That guy is only a convicted drunk driver and convicted petty thief according to his record here only in Dallas County(not sure about the rest of the universe). I had him pegged for so much more! Dallas Police need to go back and spin the Wheel of Misfortune, maybe land on a sex offender in that crowd somewhere.

Send him to Afghanistan--not with the military or anything.  Just drop him off a Kabul International Airport or something. What kind of 35-year old man acts like this?Does he even have a job?I doubt it.

Most of the time when I see the upper, sometimes even the lower amounts of possible jail time for minor crimes like speeding it seems ridiculous and I question why they set the upper limit so unreasonably high.

This shows me why the upper limit is often so high when in almost all cases it seems unreasonable.

Throw the book at him, maybe give him a few months off his sentence if he rats outs some of fellow hooligans.

"you can afford a 400 leather jacket ,but cant pay for a clutch and tuneup"

So true, but you have to understand their grandmother bought them the leather jacket for Christmas. They didn't buy it.

I guarantee you that if they did that in front of me over here in Tarrant County, I would mow them down with my pickup truck. And maybe backup over them just to make sure they were out of the gene pool. Bunch of losers, pure and simple.

I've seen the same thing.  I keep waiting one day for one of the idiots to fall over while doing a 80mph wheelie on the TW.

Darwin was right....

I agree that the stunt riders need to find someplace out of traffic to do their stunts. However, in the USA, we do not limit people's purchases to just what they need. Otherwise, everyone would be limited to the same bland clothing, cookie cutter boxes in high rises and public transportation.

Russp

Tim, you're limited everyday in what you can buy. Some examples; marijuana, machine guns, the above stated NASCAR ready Chevy and anything else some lawmaker has deemed too dangerous for you to have. Outlawing or reducing the power and top speed of these bikes would be just one more item.

And those restrictions are working so well.

It is better to punish those who abuse these things than it is to punish those who don't and choose to own and use them responsibly.BTW, you can legally purchase fully automatic weapons. They are expensive (generally over $10,000). you have to pass a very extensive background check and pay a $200 tax.

You may not be able to buy a NASCAR ready Chevy, but you can buy several sports cars capable of going in excess of 200 mph and drive them legally on the highway. However, if you are caught using them to the fullest extent of their ability, you will most likely go to jail. The same goes for these idiots.
