As the Governor Declares August 6 "Day of Prayer and Fasting," One Response to Rick Perry's "The Response" Event

Speaking of over-the-weekenders, the morning paper had a pay wall piece Saturday about Governor Rick Perry's "call to prayer for a nation in crisis" scheduled for August 6 in Houston, otherwise known as The Response. Perry's invited the nation's governors to join him; doesn't sound like the RSVPs are flying in so far.

There are locals behind the event, among them Laura Allred, as well as plenty of outsiders. Buried in Wayne Slater's account was the fact that Don Wildmon's American Family Association is actually footing the bill for the right-wingding. Which, as far as Mother Jones is concerned, is Bad News, seeing as how the Southern Poverty Law Center has put the AFA on its list of hate groups, chiefly for being anti-gay. For starters? AFA director of issue analysis for government and public policy Bryan Fischer wrote last year, "Homosexuality gave us Adolph Hitler, and homosexuals in the military gave us the Brown Shirts, the Nazi war machine and six million dead Jews."

The video invite follows. And, this just in, Perry has actually declared August 6 a Day of Prayer and Fasting. To wit:
In 1775, the Continental Congress asked the colonies to join in prayer, seeking wisdom as they faced the responsibility and opportunity of building a new nation. As leaders of that young nation assembled in 1787 to craft a Constitution, Benjamin Franklin implored the framers to pray for guidance, famously declaring, "The longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: that God governs in the affairs of men." Decades later, during a time of national turmoil, President John Adams declared "a day of solemn humiliation, fasting and prayer," asking citizens of all faiths to pray for America's protection from danger. Later, as civil war tore our young country apart, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a day of national fasting and prayer, saying "It behooves us ... to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray to the God that made us." During World War II, with our troops locked in battle on the beaches of France, President Franklin D. Roosevelt led the nation in prayer, "As we rise to each new day, and again when each day is spent, let words of prayer be on our lips, invoking Thy help to our efforts."
His proclamation also follows. Jump ... to your knees.
Gov. Perry Declares August 6th a Day of Prayer

Given the trials that have beset our country and world - from the global economic downturn to natural disasters, the lingering danger of terrorism and wars that endanger our troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and theaters of conflict around the globe, and the decline of our culture in the context of the demise of families - it seems imperative that the people of our nation should once again join together for a solemn day of prayer and fasting on behalf of our troubled nation.

In times of trouble, even those who have been granted power by the people must turn to God in humility for wisdom, mercy and direction. In the spirit of the Book of Joel, Chapter 2, Verses 15-16, I urge a solemn gathering of prayer and fasting. As those verses admonish: "15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly... 16 Gather the people, consecrate the assembly..." As Jesus prayed publicly for the benefit of others in John 11:41-42, so should we express our faith in this way.

THEREFORE, I invite my fellow Texans to join me on August 6 at Reliant Stadium in Houston, as we pray for unity and righteousness - for this great state, this great nation and all mankind. I urge Americans of faith to pray on that day for the healing of our country, the rebuilding of our communities and the restoration of enduring values as our guiding force.

THEREFORE, I, Rick Perry, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim August 6, 2011, to be A Day of Prayer and Fasting for Our Nation in Texas, and urge the appropriate recognition whereof.

Actually, this is a fine idea, providing that we understand that this prayer is not stipulated as just a "Christian" prayer or religious one, as long as it's a prayer of all religions coming together to create a desired effect.  This is about "Unity", all people regardless of faiths and beliefs to a common cause.  To pray for a healing of our and other nations and those who are deeply involved in lies, deceit, greed and worse, is exactly (at this time) what we need.  This does not have to be performed at a certain place, and certainly can be done by anyone anywhere, even in the privacy of our own homes.  To pray for peace and change for a better way of life is the desired outcome that will change our corrupt system in the U.S. and abroad, and especially the world.

Father, Help our country unite.  Help us to love one another .  Restore our nation.  Thank you Jesus.

If they dont Pray in the name of Jesus, the prayer is useless. John 14:12-14 12Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. 13And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

It appears that we all have the same problem. That is the difficulty of expressing our beliefs in a manner that upholds the intrinsic value of the individual. And because of that value we love those individuals irregardless of our differing ideology and values. I read this blog and I feel that the gay community hates me (and are haters) just because I am a Christian.

I am amazed, in reading these comments, which ones are actually full of the hatefulness while claiming that Christians are the bigoted hate mongers.  What in the world is so wrong with what is being called for in Houston?!?!?  Who does it harm, whether it's Rick Perry or Billy Graham himself calling for it.  Who does it cost besides the people and organizations that support it.  If you don't believe in God, fine.  Only time will tell how that works out for you.  But for the here and now, who does it hurt to promote calling on something greater than ourselves to help make us better than ourselves?

Oh you hate filled people. The understanding of prayer surpasses your understanding of how the spiritual world works. God isn't a vending machine that anyone can get what they want just by asking. Yes Jesus says "Ask and you shall receive", but you fail to read the rest of that gospel of the full teachings of Jesus. You just want to please yourselves because you are all selfish in what you want. If you don't understand something, you make fun of it. Let me tell you this, if you understand probabilities, then you will know that either 2 possibilities, either there is a heaven or their isn't. If there isn't a heaven and we all die, then we end up going to the same place. However, if their is a heaven and you live your life in a manner that contradicts it, who would suffer in the end?

AThought

So people should believe in G-d "just in case"? What a terrible reason to adopt religion. How is that having faith? That's more like using religion as some sort of mortal insurance policy.

Besides, there isn't just two possibilities because Christianity isn't the only religion on the planet. What about reincarnation? What about polytheistic religions? There are lots of religions with different ideas about how to get into heaven (for those faiths that actually teach that there is one).

So even if one were to say, "OK, maybe there's an afterlife so I should adopt religion just in case" it wouldn't lead them directly to Christianity. Maybe they should become a Muslim or a Jew just in case. Maybe they should be Hindi or Buddhist just in case.

Hey, here's a thought; if you don't like the idea of a day of prayer and fasting, don't attend the rally.

Or is that just too damn simply for the Austin gayboys?

I live in Dallas and will travel to Houston to be with the people that believe as I believe that our Lord and Almighty God will restore the peace we need in this Nation. The people that are against what Gov. Perry is doing should thank God that they live in a country that gives them the right to oppose. May God bless them just the same. God loves you and we love you.

The Tea Party, Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor and many more Republicans publicly idolize the atheist Ayn Rand. Their adoration was shared by Anton Lavey, founder of the Church of Satan and author of the Satanic Bible. Lavey said, Satanism is just Ayn Rand's philosophy with ceremony and rituals added. Lavey was accused of plagarizing Rand's books. Search Ayn Rand;-Anton Lavey,- Paul Ryan, -Eric Cantor, -Glenn Beck, -Rush Limbaugh, -Fox News, -William Hickman, etc. Rand despised Social Security, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, all social safety net programs and wanted them all abolished. See Mike Wallace interviews with Rand (available online-search). Rand despised Christianity and said public funds should NOT be used to feed starving Americans."Don't feed them", she told Wallace. Rand despised the poor and working class and called them "parasites feeding on the wealth amassed by their intellectual superiors".Since the GOP and the Satanists now share the same Godless philosopher, I am sure the Satanists welcomes all the new GOP converts. Ayn Rand taught pure unadulterated sefishness and had absolutely no regard for fellow human beings. While the preachers urge their congregations to vote Republican, the GOP Tea Partiers are out to destroy the working folks. God help the USA.

So according to the video Rick's answer to our nations problems is to do absolutely nothing and wait for the invisible man in the sky to fix everything for us. Brilliant.  I as an American and a Texan am proud of our leaders for taking this level of accountability for the state of affairs in our nation.

Mark 6: 2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.     5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Although I do not agree with all of Rick Perry's policies, I do agree with this.  Thank God, we have, in Rick Perry, a man that recognizes that our only hope is for us to turn to God.  As the Bible says, "blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord," and "sin is a reproach to ANY people."

You have got to be kidding. There is nothing Godly about this. It is pure pandering to gullible people who think that Perry is a Christian--like them. He gives me the willies. He is no Godly man. He cuts aid to children, he uses his cronies to enrich themsleves... and this IHOP group is of the Devil, not God. Open your eyes.

I will mark the day by eating and drinking....I won't do anything to align myself with The Family and the C Street gang, which subsidizes philandering Republican politicians and supports hate campaigns against gays. If I pray, I will pray that God delivers us from those who tout their Christianity and their patriotism while being the antithesis of Christ and who have no respect for the Bill of Rights, other than the second amendment.

Wow such hate from most of you!  This is exactly why Gov. Perry wants those who pray to pray - we need to pray that you stop being so hateful to anyone who disagrees with YOU!  Can't you be more civil.

You aren't the only person in the world.  Just don't come to the event. And, we won't go to yours.

By the way, Gov. Perry is NOT using state funds for this. It's wholly supported by faith organizations. He is attending on his day off - Saturday - so it won't interfere with his job either.

And, more bad news, just as you carry your personal "views" around with you, so do the rest of us. The difference is we don't tell you to "shut up " or call you names when you offend us because we are more TOLERANT than you are.

Carefully read what Gov. Perry said, "I urge all Americans of faith [not atheist, humanists or seculars] to pray on that day for the healing of our country [because of the crummy economy], the rebuilding of our communities [after all the floods, tornadoes, etc.] and the restoration of enduring values as our guiding force. [that we can have civil discourse without resorting to name calling]"   [Paranthesis are mine]

I just don't see how any of that is "bad" when compared to some of the stuff you people have said should be done to him and all the name calling of those who pray. Maybe you still have freedom of speech because we ARE praying for you. Ever think of that?

Tad Banyon
Tad Banyon

Its bad because its completely phony political bullshit. Rick Perry is in a position to do a lot of good and chooses not to, while insincerely asking God to fix things he won't. Pray all you want, I have no problem with personal prayer-- but a politician using the pretense of prayer to pander to a specific class of voters at the same time he's weighing his ability to win a more powerful political office, asking God for healing while actively pursuing destructive, divisive policy-- there aren't a lot of things worse than that.

Perry should be hung at the nearest tree. This man lies, has a surplus of billions because he  used stimulant money to balance his budget, if  State paid its bills and funded their departments fully there would be no rainy day fund.State going to borrow millions to fund bridges ,some in Dallas that money has to be paid back.Perry reduced tax for small business now we need the money, people can not support small business  they are going broke. Can not pay bills economy suffers and this Dam Fool thinks he's Presidential material. Wild Republicans in Austin, hating President Obama  are willing to throw their Grandparents in the street to move Federal control  from Medicaid and lose money in the process. The fools even want to take over Medicare  calling it a entitlement, hell I paid into Medicare for 35 years  could not use  until age 65 years.Republicans,Conservatives,Tea Party,Perry and dumb ass Palin ,pass a bill to refund my 45 years of payments you took my pay check for Social Security, and 35 years of Medicare payments.Stick that small ass SS check and low paying Medicare in the nearestConservative, but liberal when it comes to sex ,oil company, utility and themselves behind. Perry comes from Trailer Park to house tax payers  spending $10,000.00 per month rent .Rent alone could save Teachers pay.Perry blames Obama.. National Prayer meeting to pray for the Country,Perry needs to pray for Texas its education, and AIDS patients who will DIE without needed medication

A righteous man prays alone indoors, the pharisee makes a show of it on the street corner.  The depths to which Perry will sink in running for office continue to be lower and lower.  Sadly, he only does this because it works.  Like a slot machine that pays with every pull, call for a day of prayer and the religious right will riot to the polls for you.

I can't get over the sheer audacity this guy has. Of course, to say that our country needs to be saved from decline and to be "restored" feeds right into the mindset of those in the US who have been totally freaking out since Obama was elected. Although they can't quite tell you why, or list anything specific that he has done, it's clear to them that he is evil and must be stopped.

What gets me is that so many of the "problems" listed in the video are direct results of actions and words that Perry and his ilk have created: fear, division, poverty...

I mean, really? Perry has the guts to sign his name to this while at the same time signing his name to legislation that will take life-saving drugs away from the sick, food and education away from children, medical services away from women? Shameful.

We are having an event for actual Texans the same day, right next door.  Watch for the announcement.  Its real workers, actual citizens, women and teachers, kids with no parks or pools, old people who are hungry, men who are pissed off at their low wages, lots of disinfranchised minorities, gays, muslims, and everyone who is not a straight, white, christian male with money.  We will be next door to Reliant showing what's really going on here.  JOIN US.

(and notice how slick his out-of-state coordinators and money people are.  and the event website...clearly they've been planning this for months)

You fellas are going too far in your assumptions. He didn't say straight, white, Christian males with money were excluded. But straight, white Christian males with money are pretty well represented politically, and this sounds like an event for people who are under-represented. I'm sure if a straight, white Christian male with money wants to come, he's welcome to. But there doesn't seem to be any particularly compelling reason why he would, unless he just wants to show support. .
