Day After Emmert's Elected Chair of Dallas County GOP, Georgatos Video Goes Viral

Categories: Politics
DebbieGVideo.jpg
So, yes, former candidate for Dallas County Judge Wade Emmert is the new head of the Dallas County Republican Party, having been elected by a vote of 140-95 at last night's special election. Upon his victory, Emmert tweeted, "I'm honored to have your trust as the new Dallas Co. GOP Chairman. Now it's time to take the DCRP to the next level!" Debbie Georgatos, who also wanted to replace Jonathan Neerman, remains as his second-in-command as the party vice-chair.

And speaking of: When we posted her campaign video Sunday morning, it had been viewed, oh, maybe two dozen times -- most by me during an Old Fitz-fueled numbers-crunching Saturday night. But today I see it made Huffington Post ("Debbie Georgatos And Her Avant-Garde Political Ad"), Salon ("The weirdest campaign ad ever?") and Gawker ("Take a Journey Through Space and Time with This Dallas Candidate Lady"). Hence the more than 12,000-and-climbing look-sees -- an astonishing number for a county party campaign. Then again, as Gawker notes, all the weirdo elements contained within render it "basically Terrence Malick's new movie." I do like this Salon comment: "Who needs acid and David Lynch? I've lived in the Dallas/metroplex area for over 20 years and I am continually amazed by the greatness of local politics." But how did Gawker and Salon both confuse Metropolis with Modern Times?

Update at 3:40 p.m.: My brief interview with Emmert about his plans for the party follows.

So, what are your plans for the party going forward?

Well, we're gonna do a number of things. In an off-election year, it's all about candidate recruitment and trying to reach out to voters the Republican Party hasn't traditionally attracted. Since I'm from southern Dallas County and have some credibility in the southern sector, we're gonna make an effort to recruit African-American and Latino voters. You're gonna see a more visible Republican Party involved in those communities.

That's certainly an uphill battle ahead of you.

I think trust takes time to create. But I think having a chair from southern Dallas speaks volumes. I was the first major county candidate from southern Dallas, as county judge, and that speaks to the importance of southern Dallas. And I'm the first chair from southern Dallas. And it takes time.

Have you begun that effort, even before the election last night?

There hasn't been much of a transition period. Neerman stepped down three weeks ago, and I won last night. But in southern Dallas, there's a Juneteenth celebration that rotates among several cities. When I was on council in Cedar Hill we would go and celebrate Juneteenth in the different cities, and so the Republican Party will have a presence there.

How will you and Debbie work together -- because, hey, she's clearly the rising star here, if Gawker, HuffPo and Salon are any indication.

I think everyone recognizes we need to be more inclusive. The question is how and who. Someone from southern Dallas is in a better positin to make those inroads. Debbie and I will visit before we make any announcements.

This guy is a clueless, shallow racist.  Please, because he happens to live in the southern part of Dallas that means African American and Hispanic voters are going to like him, or believe he'll stand up for them?  Because he's going to Juneteenth to pander they are going to like him?  How many areas in Dallas do you see very rich living within a few blocks of very poor?  There are several examples (sometimes the very poor are living in the old "servants quarters" on the same property, working as house cleaners!!).  Just because Wade and some regular people live within a half mile of each other doesn't mean they share values or challenges.  Just because the local yuppies decide to ride in an ethnic parade in their BMW convertibles and museum quality restored cars doesn't mean the locals really look up to them.

Get this.  The Republicans want to destroy public education.  They want to make it easier for the very rich to get richer and send the livelihoods of the middle classes and the lower classes down, or better yet, out of the country.  They want to decide for you what you believe in and how you use your body.  They think they have all the answers for everyone else.  Their idea of "community" is golf at an all-white, all-rich country club on a Saturday.

The Republicans are dead in Dallas County.  Let's keep it that way.

Old JIM needs to take a look at Who the GOP  Dallas county really are .

Its not like Dallas Republicans  are all that Conservative in the first place .

They like to think they are but they lie to themselves.

The GOP agenda is personal responsibility. If you're against that, then what exactly are you for?

Sjp2008

Until this party--the Dallas County GOP--turns around and starts to recognize the unique gifts of all who desire to achieve what it espouses, it will continue to lose elections. This is no discussion of the national agenda.  It is, to a far less degree, a discussion of state politics insofar as those politics affect Dallas County.  However, the greater share of this discussion is focused on Dallas County GOP and how that party will achieve something it hasn't been able to achieve in the last few election cycles.  That is the main issue here and the only way the Dallas County GOP will be able to do that will be to recognize its inherent assets--the people and its resonating messages.  For too long, this county party has lost its way.  If Wade Emmert is to succeed, he needs to recognize those assets, leverage them, and in so doing he will get that message out because people yearn to be free of the shackles of an invasive government and realize their full potential.

Sjp2008

The people in Dallas County don't care anymore about the GOP message--it's gone the same way of Wayne County, Michigan.  The Dallas County GOP, after the 2010 election, has seen to it that any remnants of caring people were driven away from participating...

Sjp2008

Same old Dallas County GOP, just a different face...they've turned away so many people that the people are turning them away...

Spider = GOP. Fly = anyone who isn't a straight, white, wealthy, fundamental Christian, US-born, politically-conservative male. Don't get caught in the web of lies. The minute the election is over the spiders will be right back to the business of legislating the flies out of existence.

I really love this idea that Republicans have that they just haven't done enough to reach out to the people disgusted by them. Yeah, you have spent decades actively targeting, maligning and oppressing people with a social and financial agenda and still do and now that isn't working out so well anymore and it is impossible to ignore the rapidly changing social climate, so now you want to "reach out" to us.

Reach out, stop with the social conservatism bullshit and we can have an honest and needed debate on public and financial policy, until then I have no interest in even considering voting for people that feel that me being put in prison for being gay is a topic up for debate.

Wade, just keep on thinking that if only you can recruit Afr. Amer. candidates, those foolish Afri.Amer voters will cross-over next November to vote for your Republican, Afr.Amer. sell-outs.

Not gonna happen. Dallas County Afri. Amer. vote straight-party Democrat.

Next November, Obama will be at the top of the ticket.  Dallas County Democratic Party, Royce West, JWP, EBJ, and others will all be reaching out to our loyal Afri.Amer. voters who will, of course, vote straight Democrat.

But, we like the fact that you have a sense of humor.  Keeps us laughing all the way through election night results.

I think everyone recognizes we need to be more inclusive. The question is how and who.

Well given that as a matter of national and state GOP policy gays, non-Christians, the poor, women, the uninsured, most of the middle class, anyone that looks "foreign" and those that sympathize with their plight have already been ruled out as the "who" I'm excited to see who they decide is worthy of their outreach.

I do believe that Dallas County will go Republican in 2012! First an electorate that has been burned by Obama will turn on him. The down ballot races will benefit Republicans. This time, we need to keep the majority. With regard to Georgatos' "dallas will become detroit," she is not too far off.Dallas has 50,000 less registered voters today than in 2007! That tells you that Dallasresidents are voting with their wallets and moving to another city or county!

(So here are the knowns: FROM DALLASNEWS.COM,Mike Hashimoto,5/13/11 article

-- In 2007, Dallas had 557,483 registered voters. Of those, 25,494 -- or 4.57 percent -- voted early in the mayor's race. Total turnout was 71,467, or 12.82 percent.

-- In 2011, Dallas had 507,715 registered voters. Of those, 29,517 -- or 5.81 percent -- voted early in the mayor's race.)

If Dallas continues to decline in tax-paying population, the hole will get very deep!Once big companies move from Dallas to suburbia, the trouble will increase.I expect more leaders from the Republican Party to step up and put Dallas County andDallas city back on track.

the republican party is more big tent than the media narrative describes. at last nights election, i saw precinct chairs or all colors, sexes and creeds. this is the party that cares about inclusion. democrats sell the masses on inclusion, but their voters have no idea what a con job they are getting! historically democrats were the segregationists! they are the racists! (following your history, yet?) the great society programs have made a permanent underclass needing more and more government assistance, ceding more of their personal freedom in the process.Government Housing- how does that work for you? The folks living there don't own it, so theytrash it. They are ghettos. Public Education? Its free. Look at the condition of the buildings. There is no pride or ownership. Food Stamps? Its free. Used on all manner of things. No ownership. Lots of fat people on food stamps. When Democrats care about their constituents, let me know. The elites will always run theirparty. They will fly on jets and be put up in the luxury hotels. You will ride public transportation. The tent is full. You can put on a waiter jacket and serve the drinks.Am I  wrong? The republican party needs to make the narrative about self reliance. Being able to make something of yourself. The government gives you the tools for excellence. You have tomake something of the education, housing and other programs to succeed!

But if you look at the pathetic image of Detroit and other suburbs within Wayne County, Michigan you see the direct impact of liberal politics.  Those cities are literally crumbling because of liberal policy, a near 50% unemployment rate, and continued belief that Liberals will pay their mortgage and never get off their asses and do anything for themselves.  If we aren't careful, we will have the same entitled liberal pathetic atmosphere of the people that live in Detroit and the Metro area.

who has the republican party turned away? we brought you clarence thomas, general colin powell, sandra day o'connor, condi rice, karen hughes....elaine chao and on and on. all race and sexes are in administration positions in the govt. but the democrats call them names and sell outs. but, you have hillary clinton- mother of one , sarah palin and michelle bachman, mothers of 5 and 6 respectively. and you call them awful names.yet, speaker pelosi mother of 6, you think is mary incarnate- the very woman who brings your abortion rights. what am i missing.

spider and fly? you believe this? liberal policies have wrought decaying cities, unemployment, underemployment (obamacare kicks in at 40 hours, so NO ONE isgetting 40 hours), investment capital on the sidelines and parked overseas....what web of lies do republicans spew? democrat elites are racist! who brought you race riots. they are homophobes...who brought you don't ask don't tell? who brought you glass ceilings?it was not republicans....the tent of GOP is very wide. you buy into the lies of the media. and the democrat narrative. when you get to elite status in the democrat party, let me know. until then, spew their vitriol, but you still are not allowed inside!

a gay rights activist. i don't know a republican who has denied your gay rights. marriage is between man and woman. no one has denied you a legal domestic partnership agreement. why do you want a marriage contract? is it to show up the heterosexual population that "WE CAN BE MARRIED TOO?" why do you find that intolerant?why must i have to tolerate your bashing marriage? i'm tolerant of many things, but in your face, is something that does not work.no one is oppressing you, but yourself. last i checked, gays can work anywhere they want, no one has kept them from doing so!

here is an idea, if the "sheeple" of the southerns sector vote straight ticket democrat as i suspect republicans will do in 2012 and the democrats get the margin again for victory, you can laugh! and the taxpayers will continue to leave dallas county. eventually it will be a lose lose for everyone!

note your racial overtone...."african americans" will vote straight ticket.and you call blacks who vote republican "sell-outs!"and you call republicans racist?

HERE IS A LOAD OF DUNG! If this were the case, the republican party would have no members. There would have been NO reversal of fortune in the 2010 elections! We have a supermajority in the legislature! You think the Democrat party has helped you?

Gays vote Republican, Jews and Muslims and others vote republican. Women and the poor vote republican. So to the uninsured and middle class and foreigners. This non-sense perpetrated by the left and fomented by the haters on these websites is what makes therepublican party look bad. IT IS TIME TO CHANGE THE NARRATIVE!

When you see Democrats (Hey google, apple , hyatt , wall street firms like goldman sachs, take your money out of off shore accounts and allow it to be taxed to pay for yourDemocrat brethren in the "share the wealth" and "redistribution of weath" agenda foisted by Obama, let me know!)

They are the elites, who will pay $ 35,000 to see Obama! And, you won't. The democrat party, based on all the vitriol and rhetoric is supposed to be the party of the little guy!Has obama come to see you? Is Google, Apple, Hyatt, Goldman Sachs, Facebook and all the others coming you your aid, by allowing themselves to be taxed out the rear end to pay for your welfare programs?....I did not think so!

So enough bashing Republicans and the agenda of free enterprise. Apple engages in free enterprise and wants to retain their profits, too. And their shareholders want the returns on investment.

one of the major reasons dallas county is showing lower number of registered voters is because the elections dept. finally, a year ago, purged off the dead baggage of listed voters who had passed away, and those who had long ago moved away.  No big mass walk out, just better housecleaning on the part of the elections department

Tad Banyon

"historically democrats were the segregationists! they are the racists! (following your history, yet?)"

You've got to be kidding. Historically, the segregationists and racists were white Southern Christian conservatives, the same people who now make up the base of the Republican party. You can't compare pre-civil rights parties to today's. The modern Republican party was formed largely by those white Southern Christian conservatives who bolted from the Democratic party as soon as it embraced the idea of racial equality. Modern Republicans are not the party of Lincoln. Lincoln's Republican party were the liberals. Talk about not knowing shit about history

Tad Banyon

Kinda hard to believe you would say "the government gives you the tools for excellence" in one sentence while trashing everything the government does at the same time. Yeah, lets get rid of public education, that will be a real boon to people who want to make something of themselves.

You are correct.  Debbie is the reason for most things imploding.  She is a homophobe. She is a back stabber.  She is a liar.  She is a bully.  She lets others do dirty work on her behalf, then denies it, but won't apologize for the hate they spew.  She was the number one conductor of voter intimidation amongst GOP Precinct Chairs.  She is rude.

John_McKee

While I appreciate that Shipp reported on what many of us already knew, Broden's campaign imploded because he is nuts and the teabaggers supported him in an attempt to "prove" they weren't racist without properly investigating his background and beliefs, or even more scary, supported his nutty beliefs.

Wow.  I hope that no one reaches the depths of cynism you have obviously reached.  The power of individuals to overcome adversity fills human history.  I have to wonder two things:  what happened in your life that made you so depraved of any faith in human beings and your need to somehow revert to gutter-speak is evidence of a lack of ability to properly express yourself in words. If you are the future of Dallas County, then indeed, it is Wayne County-bound.

Thanks for pointing that out, Snookie Pie.  I thought it odd that lafnjim would use registered voter numbers to make the (false) point that people were leaving Dallas.  The only chips and axes belong to people like you.The sense of entitlement in this country is much stronger among the dynastic rich and privileged than among those born to meager means. The social programs in place could definitely use some tweaking and verifications.I just want to see the people that have benifitted the most from this country shut the fuck up about how put upon they are and realize that taxes are a small price to pay for their cushy lives.

Just so many people like you with a chip on their shoulder and an axe to grind are what leads to the poor getting poorer.  I hope there is a rebirth in Dallas County of the spirit of individuals to overcome obstacles--whatever they may be.  Just because life dealt you a bad deal, that ought to mean the victories in life you achieve are that much sweeter...the handouts will never be sweet nor valued.

lafinjim, I took your recommendation and went to rumorcheck.  This rumor was classified as, "Literally true, yet quite misleading".  The summary said, "Because the 2010 voter registration rolls had less "deadwood", it can be statistically inferred that while the absolute number of voters dropped by 1,246 names, the actual number of eligible voters probably increased by 30,000 to 50,000 names, because it can be shown that the rolls prior to 2006-2007 had a larger number of ineligible voters in them."Furthermore, this rumor was started to one John Wiley Price.  I would like to amend Chop Suey's advice to include statistics spewed by JWP.As for numbers that matter -- head count and not voter registration applications -- the census shows that both Dallas county and city increased in population.  http://2010.census.gov/news/re... not as much as other parts of TX.  That's why we're losing house seats.

112333
112333

i cited Mike Hashimoto of DallasNews. There are not 50,000 deadwood voters. Dallas County in total, according to another source (rumorcheck.com) there arein 2010  1, 145,427 voters in dallas county. in 1998 there were 1,146,673.So Dallas City is losing voters! They are leaving. To other parts of the county or out of the county! Also, young kids in southern dallas are registering to vote. The point is obvious, taxpayers are fleeing a sinking ship. This has nothing to do with Republican or Democrats. Population of Dallas City has dropped, hence, we are losing 4 state house seats. sogerrymandering is underway. SO, this is not republican spewage. This is facts, check them, yourself. If you pay taxes and the burden is getting heavier than you like...how will you vote?

Thats redistribution of the worst kind  And our competitive edge will be completely gone by the time you guys are done destroying education.
