Why'd Mayor Tom Really Quit Early?

U.S. Senate candidate Tom Leppert posted to his website today a piece titled "Serious Leadership," in which he says he's just the man to take Kay Bailey's place in D.C. because, look, "I'm not a career politician and I didn't expect to be in this position. I'm a businessman." Of course, he also used to be a mayor. At least, till he quit a few months before his first term was up to run for higher office.

Which reminds me: Yesterday Leppert spoke with The Hill about how he wasn't -- not really -- looking for John Cornyn's endorsement when he had some "positive conversations" with the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Further down in the piece, writer Sean Miller brings up Leppert's decision to scoot in February and mentions that might make him "vulnerable to the charge that he's a quitter." To which Not Mayor Tom says: Hogwash!
"When we came in, we laid out some specific objectives and priorities," he said. "I think everybody understands that [in] each one of those areas, we not only completed them, but we exceeded projections.

"I think people feel good about that," he continued. "I think people also understand that although it was a couple months short of the end of the term, the reality was that most of the council races are contested. So from a policy standpoint, there was very little that was going to be accomplished in the next couple months anyway."

Leppert lost any chance at my support when he left us with Mayor Dwayne Carraway, who has single-handedly made Dallas the laughingstock of the country. Leppert's decision to resign was selfish and unnecessary. I know many former Leppert supporters who feel as I do.....any of the Republican candidates but him..

I guess it's not any worse than Dave Neumann moving $20 million from the Hensley Field development fund to the city general fund. That went under the radar. Guess he did the gas industry a favor by 'setting the table' for them to pursue the gas.I just wonder what these guys get in return?

"There wasn't much time left anyways, and really, how much more damage could I do?"

Do I have that about right?

HA HA HA HA HA. Great joke! Now really, what did he say was the reason he quit?

1.1 million dollars raised by Leppert in this quarter.

The man is going to be a great Senator and he is obviously doing a good job of reaching out to donors and voters. The more he gets his message out, the more people will jump on board with his campaign. The rest of the Republican field in this race is rather disappointing...to me at least.

Arthur, I see you blog for Leppert on the Republican websites. Your blog comments all sound as though they are authored by the Leppert Campaign management.

And, I find it super strange that you are so passionate about the City of Dallas, when your name does not appear in DCAD as a property owner of residential or commercial. It's kind of like you don't live in Dallas County and/or your name isn't Aurthur Smythe.

One fact I'd like to correct that you stated: Just because a corrupt politician can find people who will pay for him to be elected does not correlate to the fact that the politician is "reaching out to voters", as you have tried to imply. Just because Liar-Liar Leppert has raised campaign money it does not mean he is well liked. It just means he promised somebody he'd do this or that if they gave him campaign money.

Par for the course. Every time the DO posts anything on Tom Leppert, and negative comments follow, some douche bag with an invented name responds with Leppert campaign talking points.

Listen guys...i'll gladly assume the title of mayor and you won't even have to pay me. All I need is a place to stay(cliff manors is just fine for that) some food(three meals a day from any fast food restaurant) and a case of beer w/ a bottle of Ancient Age a week. The best part about it is... i'll get just as much done as these boondogglers do...i'm much cheaper...and I have a vision for this fine city! It's for Dallas and all(and I do mean all) of her citizens to excel at whatever it is they do. To not stand in the way of the city hall members(who are the real players in the scene) ensuring the peoples votes are deciding, what direction, they wish this city to head. Good night all and God Bless!

You;ll need utilities and transport, you see, it's always something with these political types.

No, just some candles, a schwinn(since we'll have all those new bike lanes), and for my morning constitutions, there are a plethora of back alley ways. See, i'm also the Green Candidate, too! Good Day and God Bless!

I assume you mean that his GOP candidates will be the ones to point out this crummy record. If he were to win the GOP ticket, it's entirely possible that the Dem. candidate won't be so harsh and critical.

He's like our own little Sarah Palin - refusing to finish the job he promised to do, and for which he has already been paid.

Next time we elect a Republican, we should wait to pay them until AFTER they do the work..

I am no fan of quitters, especially ones that leave elected office before their terms are up. Voters voted service of the whole term. And then there is the residual manifestation in the form of the prize of interim Mayor Caraway.

That said, it should be duly noted that Mayor Leppert voluntarily DONATED his entire salary. Those dollars went to scholarships. Give credit where credit is due.

It's pretty funny that on the City of Dallas website, Caraway is listed as Mayor AND Mayor Pro Tem. Wonder if he is being paid twice?

Tom Leppert is and has always been able to hoodwink most of the voters all the time and all the rest of them the rest of the time. What was he supposed to do? Is he the only one that thinks he was good,or he he the only one who said that? Why him for anything?

I guess I am alone in this but I think the Arts District is shaping up to be amazing and I think it is great that Tom is providing another piece of performance art to the city's burgeoning arts scene.

The arts district improvements came from Dallasites, not the mayor. We've worked for years to get that project done; Leppert just happens to be the guy who was in office when it was completed.

GREAT! There's my excuse for taking an early vacation this year.

Wish I would have thought of that one years ago.

Just curious Robert...how many room-nights have been booked at that wonderful new (Dallas taxpayer owned) hotel downtown? I can't help but wonder why I'm not seeing a weekly article in the DMN about how WONDERFULLY it's doing....?

Oh Tom, how terribly short-sighted of you to think that voters won't remember you bailing on us before the end of what we originally elected you to do....BE MAYOR OF DALLAS. As a small business owner, I wouldn't consider (not even for a fleeting moment) hiring (electing) someone who has a record of walking out on the job. This will make twice that I haven't voted for you...

In all seriousness, the more I listen to Leppert, the more I come away with the impression that he is somewhat delusional.

He sure is,I served on a Board with him,he was only person, who knew the correct direction on every issue. The man ,thinks he all that and a bag of gold.

I'm pretty sure that the people who elected him gave him the "specific objective" of completing his term, no matter what other opportunities came along.

It would warm my heart if one of Leppert's opponents referred to him as "Half Term Tom" throughout the primaries.

"we laid out some specific objectives and priorities"

He built a hotel with taxpayer money. He failed to build his underwater tollway with solar taxis. He failed to maintain infrastructure and trashed the Pegasus project. But he made Jack Matthews a happy and wealthy man.Mission Accomplished!

The hotel was built(financed) with revenue bonds, not with taxpayer money.

Who Ray
Who Ray

Only a portion of the project was financed with revenue bonds. Where do you think the rest of the money came from? The taxpayers. And, who will repay the revenue bonds if the hotel is not a financial success? You guessed it, the taxpayers!

In addition, the hotel will pay NO AD VALOREM TAXES to City/County/DISD, etc. It is owned by the City of Dallas and will pay the same taxes that are paid on City Hall.......none, zip, zero.

So, this wonderful "investment" won't even increase the City's Tax Base.
