Leppert, pastor Robert Jeffress and Mark Lovvorn collectively hit the button that triggered the implosion of First Baptist Dallas.
Speaking of Dallas mayors-turned-U.S. Senate candidates ...

Tom Leppert just sent word that a new website launched today: Pastors for Leppert, which includes not only endorsements from religious leaders but also "Tom's Statement of Faith." Writes Not Mayor Tom on his Facebook page:
I am truly humbled by the support I've received from these faith leaders. We can get our country moving again if we are willing to make the hard calls necessary to reform Washington and return to the commonsense, conservative values that made our country great. I'm looking forward to working with these pastors and others across Texas as our campaign continues to gather momentum.
First up on the Tom Train? You guessed it: Robert Jeffress.

You lost our votes. Anyone who associates with the bigot in your picture is not someone a Christian would vote for. So I'm guessing he thinks the majority of Texas is Baptist and that they are all un-Christlike as he is. I also love the false we love all in the community while the pastor hates Muslim, Mormon, or I dear say anyone who left or disagrees with his church.

I just want to say this cause I know there are a lot of cool, open minded folks on this blogs.

Allow your inner gaydar come out...and then take a look at the man in the middle photo. Then look at my photo.

I'm not saying...but IJS....if you catch my gay drift.

It's a little disturbing watching a pastor blow up a house of God, isn't it?

I'm a big fan of what I've seen out of Tom Leppert. I'll put a guy with solid financial ideals in the Senate any day of the week.

It's great to see solid pastors come out in support for him - you haters would take every negative view of this situation, though.

Excting to see the endorsements piling up for former Mayor Leppert. I always appreciate leaders who are proud of their faith and who reach out to the religious community. Excellent news and something my family and I will be following closely.

Now would be the time to post pictures of Leppert at the Pride Parade on Cedar Springs.

I'll always remember the headline on PegasusNews.com when Leppert won.It was something like "We ended up with Leppert, but at least he's not GAY".

The whole Republican community was delighted - the UFO fringe, the Tea Party bigots, the Birthers - they were all so jubilant to have this fellow from Hawaii as mayor of Dallas - simply because he was not gay.

His opponent at the time was a gay man who had worked for the people as a public servant all his life. But the Christians didn't see that. All they could see was was their own hatred for God's beloved child.

Interesting the Dr. Jeffress, who only a few years ago caused a huge stink at his former church in Wichita Falls about banning books in the local libray relating to homosexuality would endorse a candidate who marched in gay pride parades? Hypocricy at its worst ...

Robert Jeffress is an embarrassment to human kind.

I wonder how Ex-Mayor Laser Eyes is going to explain away his embracing of the Dallas Gay Community? You know, all his parading around each year with all those homosexuals down on Cedar Springs.

Seems to me he even signed his name to several proclamations for Gay Pride.

Well, you've got to figure there were a few sinners out there in the "faith leaders" community, too. Ted Haggard...Jim Bakker...Jimmy Swaggart...etc., etc..

Leppert must have used the "I have sinned" speech with them and now all is forgiven.

Shouldn't this website be "Baptist Pastors for Tom Leppert" b/c thats all I see. Also, I guess he doesn't want the support of Catholics, Episcopalians, or any other Christians who have priests and who might happen to be "conservative."

Where was he hiding all this crazy while he was Mayor?

Leppert has just insured that he will not get our votes!

Leppert: "We can get our country moving again if we are willing to make the hard calls necessary to reform Washington and return to the commonsense, conservative values that made our country great."

Of course hypocrites like Tom "Quitter" Leppart like to talk about their phony "Christian" values that allegedly made America great but any talk of increasing revenue back to the levels of the "good ol' days" -- ie Eisenhower era -- when our interstate road system was built and infrastructure maintained is strictly off limits.

Hey, Tom, I don't think Jesus said anything about increasing Q4 profits and avoiding taxes...I believe he said something about paying Caesar's things to Caesar and he turned over the money changers tables in the temple.

What a condescending creep!

I, for one, never wanted to see Pastor Jeffress' O-Face. But how else could we describe that picture?

What is the name for those guys who get the male porn stars, you know what, to stand up, all tall and mighty before a scene??? That's what he looks like! Thank you for helping coax my inner gaydar out this morn. Kudos!

Solid financial ideals like building a huge convention hotel!!!

Erich S
Erich S

Excuse me?? I have no love for a quitter who left our city in the hands of a man who passes out Keys to the City like they were handbills for a landscaping outfit. I have no love for a "solid" business guy who tricked the city into getting into the hotel racket. I have no love for a hypocrite who cozies up to the homos when he needs their support and then casts them aside for a bunch of racist Southern Baptists when he finally sees the "big picture" aka "I need to get these crazy-ass crackers on my side if I'm gonna make it in Texas GOP politics."

Call me a hater but, RJ, I call you an ostrich. Your head is so far in the sand. If you think what Leppert peddles is "solid" business then you might need some business ethics refresher courses. Leppert is unethical and by my estimation, that makes his Christianity somewhat suspect. Of course for you GOP/Tea Bag bozos, that's just business as usual.

Wylie H.
Wylie H.

What are his "solid financial ideals"? So far, it seems like just a bunch of very general, stock talking points, which are all contradicted by his extremely activist, big-government, big-spending, entitlement-loving ways when he most recently tried serving as mayor (he got tired or bored or something, though, so he bolted).

In all seriousness, he's an extreme hypocrite, and that makes it impossible to believe anything he says. Quite an accomplishment for someone who has been a professional politician for such a short time!

Coleman

you're just the kind of sucker that Leppert is hoping for.

DoubleOJoe

Dana, please read some of the other comments. Leppert wouldn't give 30 pieces of silver for his faith. He's cozying up to groups that he thinks will get him elected, just like he did with the gay pride groups. Don't let him manipulate you into believing that he supports you. It's a lie.

he didn't get the books banned, he literally just checked them out and refused to give them back. Robert Jeffress is the worst kind of scumbag.

Sanders Kaufman

Leppert's fellow Republicans knew that he would have to appease the gay community - and so the tolerated. It's like when George Bush tries to buddy up to former presidents - nobody really believes he's their friend.

But it's not like he ever outwardly endorsed them or their politics. He just showed up so that they wouldn't write articles that he didn't.

The former mayor of Dallas is making a run for the senate, and set up a weird Baptists for Leppert website. Do you really think that isn't news?

He's not crazy. He's opportunistic. The funny thing to me is that we talk about what rubes the average Dallas voter is that he/she falls for the lies that people like Leppert tell. The fact that he's dumbing it down for the Senate primary doesn't speak well to his opinion of the average Republican primary voter.

MattL1
MattL1

You say he was "hiding" it. I say instead that he was just "saving it up" for the Senate campaign. You need to save up a LOT of crazy to run for the GOP Senate nomination in Texas.

Erich - I'll hand it to you that I've never been called an ostrich before - it's clever and new - so thanks.

Your argument really has to be better than "I hate the guy because I don't like the guy that replaced him".

1. He was mayor of all the people in Dallas - including gays and straights. You can be kind to people and disagree with them.

2. As for him being a "quitter", It's hard to make such an argument when every politician does the exact same thing - 99 out of 100 times no one ever says anything about time left on a term. Take our current president - he started running for president 12 months into his 6 year Senate term.

RJ
RJ

It's a stretch to say he has big-government, big-spending ways when he doesn't have a legislative history and you're just skewing economic development projects.

I'm pointing to his track record as CEO of Turner Construction. Some of these dang bureaucrats who spend their entire life in government have no concept of reality. I'll take a guy like Leppert who realizes the solution to our country's economic issue doesn't include printing more money and increasing our already disgustingly inflated federal budget.
