"Beyond Belief": Transport Workers Union Furious Over Gerard Arpey's $5.2 Mil

AMR CEO Gerard Arpey
As you're no doubt aware, American Airlines' flight attendants and service workers have long been at odds with the Fort Worth-based carrier over new contracts, leading to an endless parade of protests -- including ones at Dallas-Fort Worth International during Super Bowl week and one on Wednesday at JFK in New York. This won't help: In a proxy statement filed yesterday with the Securities and Exchange Commission, parent company revealed that CEO Gerard Arpey pocketed more than $5.2 million in compensation last year. As the Associated Press notes today, "The increase came during a year in which AMR lost $471 million and was the only major U.S. airline company to lose money."

Hence the statement that just landed in the Unfair Park in-box from Garry Drummond, Director of the Air Transport Division of the Transport Workers Union of America. Long story short: You want protests, American? You got 'em.
It's almost beyond belief and certainly shameless that Arpey's compensation grew 11 percent over the previous year and AMR President Tom Horton saw an increase of 45 percent. Along with their announcement yesterday, AMR's leadership should have stuck a red-hot poker in the eye of every employee, it would have had the same effect as this proxy statement.

Our members sacrificed to keep this airline out of bankruptcy eight years ago, we have boosted productivity and brought in new revenue, yet only the top managers receive rewards. I could use a lot of four letter words to describe what our members think of this behavior, to be civil, let me use five letters, this is G-R-E-E-D.

It is very telling that the company released the proxy at night, the evening before what is a long weekend for many. Despite their every attempt to hide, we will shine a spotlight on this and we will continue to fight for fairness and economic justice for everyone at American and American Eagle. Expect to see protests from our members across the country.

The latest round of contract negotiations is going to be brutal.  The alternative to an agreement is bankruptcy, though, is that really where folks want this to go?  AA did not go the route that other airlines went years ago and file for bankruptcy.  They asked for help in terms of wage cuts from the folks so that they could basically keep things the same.  What happened to the employees of the airlines that filed bankruptcy?  Wages *and* headcounts were cut.  AA is one of only a few American airlines that does its own maintenance, the others have outsourced it to South America.  The maintenance area recently lost a large contract for repair of other airline's aircraft because they would not, NOT could not, would not turn the aircraft around without more overtime.  Gotta watch that shootin' yourself in the foot.

Beyond belief is an understatement, shld sub-title =Only in America=, cut ALL employee wage's up to %33, add %40 higher work load due to hand's on employee cutbacks and/or NOT re-filling positions due to attrition, job elimination or transfer's, Posting dramatic yearly earning's LOSS"S and the topper is rewarding themselves, [ALL of upper management staff ONLY] with astronomical bonus"s, and all in the midst of labor contract negotiations, this type activity should not just be morally wrong but simply illegal, reminds me of the 70's steel dumping and now having USA's steel industry provided by foreign companies, where is government when you really need them?,?, go figure, as long as the lobbyist are paid and tax's are up to date, guess that's good enough, [gag] AA's work force has been reduced to yearly earnings mimicking the late 1980's yet these select few individual's approx 55 people; upper mngt staff are raping the system, Public perception is uninformed, no career employee wish's to be perceived as doing a bad or substandard job, hard for anyone living thru these work environment conditions to eat the shiot sandwich with needy, demanding passengers and still remain professionally composed, when you have just lost your house, killed the kids college fund, had your car repossessed, and/or recently filed for bankruptcy.......that about does it, going to go throw up now, cant wait to see the high school locker room comments from this post......lol

Is that stock or cash.If stock it has little meaning in todays world.

His story is one of many reasons that AA is such an awful airline.

Since the raise is in stock it’s probably harder to control, but wouldn’t you think that just from a marketing standpoint, he could have kicked back half a million in stock and this wouldn’t be a story?

So they cut the pay of the workers, charge me higher fares and bag fees, lose money, and the CEO gets his pay bumped? What a frickin world we live in. And you right wing idiots side with the CEO. Classic stupidity.

$5.2 million sounds about right, for having to put up with all those whiny union prima donnas.

ScottsMerkin

So you think locking yourself and all the top executives in on the top floor of cAAmp AMR is putting up with Whiny prima donnas? They ignore them as much as possible. Would you enjoy your boss taking a million dollar pay raise while telling you that you are taking a 33% paycut, just sayin

You mean the ones who actually do something every single day that insures you won't end up spattered on the ground?

American is just a crappy airline period. The see customers as an entitlement. I'd like to see them all out of work.

You don't even imagine what we go thru so that the airplane you are flying can take off and land safely. So next time you are on a plane think about the skill and dedicated employees who are making sure your travel is safe.

Rderrickwhite
Rderrickwhite

No Ricky, I won't think about it. I will not for one simple reason. I pay very high ticket prices, so that I don't have to think about it. The praise you are looking for should come from your management team. You are essentialy saying, "instead of worrying about the fact that we're rude to you while taking very large amounts of your money, you should just be grateful that we aren't killing you". I disagree.

I'd love to hear what you consider high ticket prices! Can you elaborate, so I can calculate how much it would cost you to do the same trip by land?

Nice. Because the employees, whose families depend on a paycheck and follow the corporate policies, can easliy find work elsewhere!?! Maybe their are some that our sour, but there are many more that want to see the future of AA survive. I guess fewer airlines would be better if you do not like choices, right?

My girls do not need the medical and dental coverage, right? There is more to an airline shutting down than planes not flying!

How is the situation you are describing unique? Every adult with kids face these challenges. If the company you work for treats you like garbage, the respectable thing to do is to go work for another company - not treat customers like garbage.

Gee, you could never tell the AA flight attendants were pissed by the way they yell at passengers, hide in the galley during most of a flight, ignore call buttons being rung, forget to serve drinks, arbitrarily demand bags be checked, and disappear up the jet-way when the cabin door opens at the end of a flight. I thought it was all of the AA 'passengers are to be treated as cattle' customer relations program that they run so well.

Larrybell12000

I dont think you fly very much flight att. have to stay on untill all pass. are off the plane your right there are rude flight att. there are also rude passengers what do you think should ececutives receive bonuses if a comp. is losing millions and millions every quarter if you think they should then ive got words i cant say online someone who cares

Flight Attendant
Flight Attendant

First of all, flight attendants don't "hide" in the galley - that is their space, after the service is completed. I don't think you would appreciate having them sit in the aisles and in your way. Second, call buttons are meant for emergencies - not neediness.

Citizen Kim
Citizen Kim

You know, whenever I fly on AA the flight attendants are polite, helpful, and always offer a smile. Maybe there's something in your personality that brings out the worst in people.

Heywood U Buzzoff
Heywood U Buzzoff

@Kim -- I used to think it was me until one flight the flight attendant went ballistic on a woman two rows in front of me who kept the iPod ear buds in her ears though the iPod was not only shut off bus disconnected from the ear buds. Or the elderly man on my flight last week who ripped a new one 'cause he could not help another passenger put a bag in an over head bin because he was not strong enough to lift the bag despite the Schutlz level screen spewing from the flight attendant.

scottindallas
scottindallas

Kim, do you not see any connection between flight attendants being underpaid, feeling under-appreciated and the CEO, a simple manager with little skin in the game getting paid in one year enough to live comfortably for the rest of his life?

Citizen Kim
Citizen Kim

Jeesz! Do you fly to/from NY a lot? I hear this is where they put the new ones and they have to live like 10 to an appartment and have ridiculous schedules - that might explain the bad attitude.

Dan
Dan

Heywood, how does the greed of AA top Executives turn into a rant against the flight attendants?

Heywood U Buzzoff
Heywood U Buzzoff

@Dan -- The flight attendants see to be taking out their anger on the passengers. Maybe they should be returning their bosses to a 'tray closed and seat in an upright position' instead.
