Sorry, Jack, but Mayor Dwaine Caraway did not appear on last night's CBS Evening News With Katie Couric, which, as advertised, did indeed run an "Assignment America" story about Dallas's deep ties to earthquake- and tsunami-ravaged Sendai, one of our International Friendship Cities. Instead, the piece was about Mark Berry's role as a board member of the Japan-American Society of Dallas and his efforts to reach those with whom the local has formed relationships during his myriad trips to Japan. (He's found some, but not all, of his friends in Sendai in recent days.) The story also shows Berry's 82-year-old dad, seen here, who'd never met someone from Japan till Mark introduced him. Says reporter Steve Hartman in the piece that follows, these sister-city relationships "make neighbors out of people who might otherwise say they couldn't care less."
