Tom Leppert: Drill, Baby, Drill!

leppertperry11.jpg
Yesterday we covered Dallas Mayor-turned-U.S. Senate candidate Tom Leppert's position on National Public Radio. This afternoon, on the Facebook, I got this note from Not Mayor Tom:
Excited to launch our new petition calling on President Obama to stop our dependence on foreign oil, boost natural gas production, and create jobs here at home. Sign today and share the petition with your friends!
OK already! Here's the petition. But long story short: He feels your pain at the pump -- just like John Boehner! -- and wants you to tell President Obama to get to drillin' in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Very original.

The bias against Leppert on this blog is a constant source of amusement, even if it is extremely misguided.

It's wrong to want end our dependence on foreign oil and examine more domestic options? Have you watched the news? Do you realize the problems our dependence creates for our country, and for our citizens at the gas pump? Just because it has been said by other politicians doesn't make it any less true: We desperately need to work on a more intelligent energy plan that explores ALL options that help ween us off our foreign oil need...

Leppert is right and I hope people are listening because we need to get things squared away quickly and the folks in D.C. currently just aren't getting it done.

Yeah its not really about foreign oil or NPR, per se. Its more about abandoning his responsibilities as mayor (and sticking us with a nut like Caraway certainly doesn't help his cause) only to spend his time acting like an all-too-typical overly-handled politician. At a time in which Americans are as cynical about politicians as ever, Leppert couldn't sound any less authentic or more focus group driven. Just what we need, one more carefully scripted, carefully coiffed guy saying only those things that are guaranteed to appeal to the least common denominator voter. If I ever see the real Tom Leppert (if there is one), I might like him. But I don't like this clown. Especially so since he couldn't even finish the last job he was given (and spare me, please, the spin about accomplishing everything ahead of schedule)..

The issue isn't dependence on foreign oil. The issue is someone thinking they can posture themselves by tweeting about it.

During his aborted career an mayor of Dallas I never once heard him mention (or tweet) our dependence on foreign oil OR federal funding of public broadcasting. If these issues are so f***ing important to TL as an individual, a person, a human being, then why do we only hear about it now? You already know the answer.

Tweets are for twits.

Holy smokes - y'all are a bunch of haters.

That's his stance on energy - and opposing another push from President Obama for Cap and Trade is something I appreciate.

Nowhere in there did it say, "drill, baby, drill!" or take on some regurgitated Fox canned talking point.

In Texas, he speaks what the majority wants to hear. And, as our education system sinks to new lows, it will only get worse. I'm starting to think that most of the country would like to see us declare our independence.

Out of curiosity, if he got all the unrestricted domestic oil drilling he could possibly want, would that cure the need for foreign-produced oil? And if so, how long would the U.S. production cure that need? In other words, is there enough untapped U.S. oil reserves to actually do what he says he wants to do for a period of time that it would make it arguably worth paying the environmental costs? Or has once more he refused to be confused by the facts?

It depends on what we are talking about. Conventional drilling is relatively clean and has minimal environmental costs. Deep sea drilling has challenges that are now obvious, but there are vast reserves there. Finally, shale oil is vast, but needs vast amounts of water and energy to tap. The US is one of the top 3 oil producers globally, Saudis and Russia and the US each produce 9 millions barrels per day. Then our next largest oil suppliers are Saudi Arabia, Canada, Venezuela, Nigeria and Mexico. It might be possible for us to produce much of our own oil, if we were to expand all of our capacity, but it would cost more than foreign oil.

why do I get the feeling that this man will say anything to get elected. His only agenda is ego.

Honestly, I don't think he's trying to get elected. As someone commented on an earlier article, it looks to me like he's parroting the party line so that he's a prime candidate for a cushy appointed job under some other Republican.

I say we drill, alright. Right in his backyard.

If Leppert was so inclined, he could just substitute a computer for his campaign persona. All the computer would have to do is scan the mass media for recurring conservative talking points, then regurgitate them as tweets and press releases.

He could get in some break time back home in Hawaii, then show up in a couple of months to do some "in person" stuff.

Does this asshat really think that adding a few drops of polar bear piss is going to affect oil prices? Saudis already said they'll pump more to fill the void left by our new democratic allies in the North Africa Mid-East 21st Century Democracy Zone.Price of gas has little to do with how much oil is pumped out of the ground and everything to do with oil company fear-mongering and Wall St. commodities traders.

The sad part will be all the people who will soak up his party-line rhetoric based on nothing but anti-Democrat spittle. Same old line. Give us a candidate who thinks.

Is there any problem Leppert can't solve? (banks, cities & succession planning excepted) I eagerly await Leppert's take on the AFA petition & Rand Paul's stance on the toilet.

Why can't he show some originality? Is thinking independently such a big deal?

Independent thinking is a major red flag, you might just come up with a program that fails to grease the palms of his benefactors.

Leppert has not uttered an original thought since he announced his candidacy. He doesn't even bother to customize the talking points he lifts directly from FOX or the RNC. I can just visualize his handlers "for God's sake...stay on the script....don't ad-lib...."

The longer he is on the campaign trail, the more we see and the more disgusting he truly is.He really does not care for Dallas residents and the environment much less Texas residents and the environment.Let's put a gas rig 300 feet away from his nice, big home and see how he likes to 'smell the benzene and formaldehyde in the morning'. It might even put a little color in his cheeks.

Just because oil is drilled in the US doesn't mean it stays in the US.
