Mike Rawlings Says Dallas Mayor Must Use "Bully Pulpit" to Address Issues at Dallas ISD

Two days ago we looked at Mike Rawlings's Education Plan, which calls for forming partnerships between the city of Dallas and the Dallas Independent School District. He follows up with the video you see above, in which the city's former homeless czar insists that the mayor must take an active role in public schools -- be it as "cheerleader" or problem-solver.

When I caddy for Mr. Big Mike Rollings at all white, Preston Trails, he often tells me that would be as great a DISD Czar as he was a Homeless Czar

His strategy is all the white kids go to private school and us mexicans and blacks go to DISD

Fix it or throw it away

Actually, it's not Mike's strategy. It's Hiney's.

Hiney doesn't want the white kids' parents involvement. He was the illegal Mexican's in DISD. Because they don't participate or get involved. Because, they're illegal.

That's what our tax dollars are paying for--illegals.

Like they weren't all up in each others's bidness already. Rawlins just said it on vimeo.

If he really wants to do something to help DISD, he'll get on a 7 am plane in the morning to Austin to be in the Capitol for debate and votes on HB 1. And on the phone tonight with Dan Branch.

Now, hold on just a minute. I disagree. I'm tired of pouring money into this DISD pit. I'm actually for Texas legislature cutting the DISD budgets. Cutting Pre-K, and all the other pork. It's high time all every branch of government learn to get by on a lot less.

I'm tired of being everybody's cashcow.

Okay "market dog." The Texas Legislature is mandated by the State Constitution to fund equity in public education. What's your plan?

Every statistical measure out there will tell you pre-K dollars, especially in an urban district like DISD, are the biggest bang for the buck. Don't take my word for it. Do the research.

And I'm guessing you're hardly "everybody's cash cow." I know you're not mine.

equity can also mean that EVERYONE gives up equally, not just GETS equally....when the minorities PAY equally, then they should GET equally.

Glad that Barefoot Sanders finally DIED.

Baloney about the pre K.The effects disappear within a year or two if the child is not adopted by involved, focused parents.

And you've never answered this question: Are you ok with HInojosa's ridiculously high salary (especially in light of the district's performance) AND the constant raises for his buddies placed in administration??

You don't see waste there? You think we should just keep shoveling money at these people and hoping that, maybe, if they feel generous, they will use it to keep class sizes below 40?

When is enough enough? How to fix DISD: turn of the money spigot that attracts these race-based, unqualified opportunists with no interest in the kids of the district.

He's using his friends as actor. I see he leaned on the other parks board members to appear.

Once again, people will fight any solution but yet again never find anyone for themselves. At this point, it's really about what Mike Rawlings is saying on what he "wants to do" or what "he would like to do". The point is, he is saying something. Truth be told, nothing that any candidate says on the campaign trail will ever come true if the council and community do not support it. What is important right now, is that Mike has a plan. Have you heard anything from Natinksy on his platform other than STAFF'S recommendation for West Dallas. What has Punkle stated on anything. He even sat there and said with a straight face that he didn't have enough information to determine how he would have handled the Love Field contracts, but then went on to say that Leppert handled them the wrong way.... I guess with his limited information, he still had enough to decide on that....

Why are you the decider of what point is to be gleaned in this article.Who died and named you boss?

"the point is, he is saying something."

Sorry, there, sport, but we are the VOTERS. Therefore, we decided. Rawlings makes these wrong and somewhat ridiculous and often misinformed statements/platform, etc. and WE, the VOTERS decide and spout off on how wrong, or misinformed he is.

That's how our country works.

Not sure where in what I said that you got off that I am the boss. But I'm sorry. What I am trying to convey is that the common voter and the majority of people a quick to judge others on anything that anyone says. And instead of the voters quickly judging a candidate on what they are specifically stating and why they are against that statement. Be more concerned with a candidate to vote for that atleast has a plan in place for the job...

Rather than vote for a candidate that as most people are just against an idea. I encourage people to vote for a candidate that actually publically chooses a side a candidate that has a platform. And in this country I have the I have the right to do that...

You know something that might well help Dallas schools that the mayor could actually work to accomplish? Find a way to get the appraisal district to properly value commercial properties.

Nah, Katy Trail mom probably lives in Lakewood somewhere and sends her kids to Woodrow. That's the only DISD non-magnet school I'd have my kids attend.

So his efforts to improve DISD are cheerleading and marketing? Crap wrapped in a bow is still crap.

I agree that we need more than cheerleading or problem solving, but we all know that the 14-1 arrangement is designed to make a Dallas Mayor no more than an at-large councilman with a bully pulpit.

I hope 14-1 comes back to the table after Mayor Rawlings or Mayor Kunkle is sworn in.

Snookie Pie

Bob, I disagree completely. Mayor is not supposed to be a councilperson at large and that is definitely what the job entitles.

Mayor is the PR spokesperson/ambassador/ribbon cutter for City.Who also, just happens to have a vote at the horseshoe.

Unfortunately, so few voters grasp this or know, so the mayoral candidates year after year campaign on platforms only appropriate for a councilperson position. Kunkle is huge example of this.

I can't stand Natinsky, but at least he is not campaigning as a councilperson. And, neither is Rawlings.

Just Kunkle. And, I'm sure his PR wife, Sarah is putting this out there on purpose to woo the votes. She knows very well what Mayor powers are, after all, her BFF is Laura Miller.

Good luck with that naive white libtard fantasy. Rawlings the naive white libtard candidate for the Observer's naive white libtard crowd.

Anyone know who the lady in the Katy Trail t-shirt is? I'm doubting she's a DISD mom.

I'm with you. We have enough problems with our own BOT. All we need is another political entity screwing thing up even more.

If he wants to be a cheerleader I can teach him the "Hey Wildcats" chant/song.

I think he was at the Woodrow International Baccalaureate World School dedication ceremony yesterday. And there was quite an entourage of "I Like Mike" folks.
