Jon Daniels To Be Rangers GM Through 2015

The Texas Rangers just sent word: General manager Jon Daniels, who was only under contract through this season, today signed a four-year extension -- the financial terms of which were not announced. Hard to believe, but should Daniels stick around through the 2015 season, that would mark his 10th anniversary as GM with the ball club. He'll turn 22 in 2015. No?

Says Nolan Ryan, co-owner and club president, in a statement forwarded by the Rangers: "Jon and his baseball operations group have done an outstanding job in building an organization that will allow the Rangers to contend for postseason play year in and year out. The efforts in scouting and player development as well as sound decisions on the major league level have put our franchise in a good position. We look forward to Jon leading our baseball operation for many years to come."

To which Daniels adds:  "I am appreciative of the faith that ownership has shown in our baseball leadership group. We're proud of what we've accomplished to this point, but clearly we have more work to do to reach our ultimate goal. Keeping our baseball operations group together is a huge step towards that end." I remember reading that Daniels had the option to go elsewhere after the ownership change last year. So the fact that he chose to sign on here for the long term is a positive sign for Ranger fans it seems to me.

No doubt, he would like a "do-over" on the John Danks for Brandon McCarthy deal, and perhaps a couple of the trades made at the deadline last season. But there is no question that his moves have, for the most part, turned out well for the team. And the farm system has become one of MLB's best under his leadership.

Take your "Jon boy" and suck it, Grandpa Randy Galloway.
